Ross Ching Creates A Los Angeles Without Cars

First Posted: 06/21/10 09:38 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:50 PM ET

Found on Treehugger via YDT, this amazing video by artist Ross Ching imagines a Los Angeles withoug cars, particularly timely in light of the recent National Dump The Pump Day promoting alternatives to driving.

Treehugger explains Ching's process:

He used time-lapse techniques to capture the movements of clouds, people, traffic lights... But no cars. They were removed in Photoshop by layering enough still images that all parts of the image covered by cars could be replaced by parts from other pics where a car wasn't in that spot.

Running on Empty from Ross Ching on Vimeo.

"what's the use of an 8 lane freeway without a bunch of cars?'

What is the use of an 8 lane freeway that has so many cars on it that they cannot move?

I agree it's very post-apocalyptic. The only things moving, streetlights, clouds, some trees (and oil wells moving like mad at the end?) don't say much for a future vision. At first glance of the headline I thought there would be an imagined form of transportation post-cars, but instead of an airplane for a short period of time, there doesn't seem to be any human movement or existence.
Some extended shots don't have any plants moving. This is different than a series of shots because there are inconsistancies throughout.
Perhaps this is a post-zombie world too, when their food supply has become extinct.

It's still photos around Los Angeles taken over the course of four years by Matt Logue.
Much cooler!

The stills are better because they are all the same thing - stills of various parts of La, empty. Except for a few beach and office shots though, the great majority are of the hwys of La. La has so much more to offer.

Neat trick, but as a native of L.A., it's also creepy. Very post-apocalyptic.

Like seeing Manhattan w/o people--just wrong. *shudders*

I didn't see many people in there either.

Jess,
I know you write in fun. The stereotype might be as you suggest, but La is a wonderfully vibrant city.
