Mike Huckabee 'Ick Factor' Comments Slammed By Gay Rights Groups

Mike Huckabee Gay Groups
National gay rights groups responded to Mike Huckabee's claims that there was an "ick factor" behind his reasons for opposing gay rights.

Gay rights groups are shooting back at former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee's recent claims that an inherent "ick factor" of homosexuality plays a part in his opposition to same-sex marriage.

According to a forthcoming New Yorker interview released online Monday, Huckabee said, "We can get into the ick factor, but the fact is two men in a relationship, two women in a relationship, biologically, that doesn't work the same."

Human Rights Campaign Vice President Fred Sainz told Politico that he wasn't surprised by Huckabee's comments, and called the 2008 -- and perhaps 2012 -- Republican presidential candidate "a man who is consistently wrong and uninformed."

"Ick is being fired from a job, being the victim of a hate crime or being bullied at school simply because you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender," Sainz told Politico. "And ick is certainly an appropriate way to describe Mr. Huckabee's mind going to sex when all that we are asking for is our equality. Ick, indeed."

Denis Dison, Vice President of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, also responded to the comments, writing in an email to Politico:

"The man keeps putting his foot in his mouth...Talk about 'ick factor.' One can only guess Gov. Huckabee has discovered he gets more press hits every time he says something stupid about gay people."

Huckabee has exhibited a penchant for making inflammatory statements concerning gay rights. In an April interview with the College of New Jersey's student publication, the Perspective, the former Governor compared gay adoption to experimentation and reminded reporters that "Children are not puppies."

During the same interview, Huckabee said that "accomodat[ing]" advocates of same-sex marriage was no different than appeasing proponents of polygamy, illegal drug use and even incest.

Huckabee doesn't hide how he feels about this. For right or worng, he has his beliefs, and sticks by them. And the usual suspects hate him for that.

Contrast that with their atitude towards Obama. He has lied to them time and time again about issues important to gays. He campaigned on advocating for them, now he governs (or whatever the heck it is he does now!) on the opposite side of all  Read More...

What do you expect from an Arkansan? He's from a place where when he was born a black person and a white person could not marry until the court forced them to change their laws.

Now as a person of color I see that there is not a 1 to 1 correspondence between those two problems. However when we get down to it the motivation for banning gay marriage is basically the same. Namely biggotry no more not less.

SO WHAT MIKE?! As a gay man I find the idea of sex with a woman icky. I have not and will never engage in that behavior, but I have no trouble with other people enjoying heterosexual sex. I neither pity nor envy them, but support their pursuit of happiness. This is where Huckabee gets it wrong. He elevates his personal preference and pet-peeves to moral absolutes (with a little help from his fundamentalism). That is hubris. Personal aesthetics are not reasons to fight against the civil rights of gays and lesbians in America!

Who wants a born again Christian, rapture believing ignoramus for our next president????? He'd be even worse than Giuliani or McCain. I wonder how many of those Southern Baptist preachers have porn on their computers? We had one in our state who recently was arrested for having over 4 million pictures on his computer.

Mike Huckabee is a skilled politician. He has one way of talking to religious conservatives and then he puts on a different face for readers of the New York and other "secularits".

But his politics aside, he will never be President because of his pardons. Because of them, four police officers are dead and two women have been raped and murdered. He has been adept at deflecting questions about that issue, but as a presidential candidate, it is going to be more difficult.

It has been proven that males who are so disgusted by gay males are often closeted gays themselves and they are trying to throw people off their trail by over reacting to the gay lifestyle.

huckabee is a folksy charming bigot. a slave of the religious right, aipac and fox news. there is zero differance between him, pat robertson, rev. hagee, franklin graham and the late jerry falwell. actually he is even less honest than the rev. james baker and jimmy swaggert. unfortunately, there is no shortage of huckabees running loose in america. just read an article on todays soccer game against algeria. most players on americas team admitted that they had never heard of algeria but were pretty certain that it was located some where in europe. this is where were at in america.....

How can this guy even think about running for Prez in 2012? Its not very intelligent to slam an entire demographic no matter what he thinks about them. They are still still still American citizens entitled to equal rights as other "god fearing" Americans like him. He can't go around calling them "ick factor" Americans....

Now thats not the "Real America"!!!! :((((

the constitution defends our right to expressing our hateful, irrational, political incorrect, uniformed, theologically twisted and derisive views. You need to look at as supplying Colbert and Stewart with material.

You know, just because you go to college does not mean that you are educated. Huckabee is a prime example of that. There is something seriously lacking in the Republican consciousness that manifests itself as very serious insentitivity as revealed by Huckabee. Maybe it's a lack of education in the Humanities or Social Science. On the other hand, religion defifinely is proving to be negative education. This is truly a revelation of the way that religion can cause a serious lack of compassion and empathy. These people think that their God wants this type of hate and, in some cases, violence. America has to be aware of this sickness and avoid it with all of its might. We must destroy this ignorance so that we can move forward as a loving, compassionate, and empathetic nation. Don't we want this? You would think that religious folks would want this.

In my experience, the straight guys who have a problem with gays, have a personal problem.

Most straight guys just don't care, it's not interesting to them or threatening to them.

You're right, and it's not just your experience- here's the scientific study:
