Obama Looking At Multiple Options - Including A Stay - To Keep Drilling Moratorium

Offshore Drilling

The Obama administration is considering a host of options, including seeking a stay from the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, in order to maintain a moratorium on deepwater drilling after it was overturned by a federal judge.

Officials at the Department of Justice and within the administration convened Tuesday afternoon shortly after U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman ordered an end to the halt in drilling put in place following the explosion at Deepwater Horizon. The administration had already pledged to immediately appeal the decision to the 5th Circuit Court. But in the interim, companies could legally restart drilling operations that had been put on hold.

Hoping to avoid that situation, officials bandied about several options, "one of which would be to seek a stay from the court," an administration official told the Huffington Post. Some of the options, however, "may not necessarily generate from the Justice Department," the official said, suggesting that the president would look at the political powers he has in this context.

"The goal is the same," the official said. "To keep the moratorium in place."

In putting such resources behind the deepwater drilling halt, the Obama White House will inevitably incur the wrath of a host of Gulf Coast lawmakers (Democrats and Republicans alike) who have been critical of the moratorium, citing the economic impact.

The White House, however, is clearly invested in allowing the presidential-appointed oil commission to continue to investigate what went wrong at the BP well and whether similar problems exist at other sites. In the end, the political hit they take for it may be outweighed by the growing public skepticism over deepwater drilling in general.

I will say it like I said it before ... If a second rig caused a second leak (in a matter of months or a year) people will be still be against a moratorium in that region ... people in the region are given the options of finding other jobs in a bad economy or sticking with their current jobs of working on oil rigs... sometimes people have to take the risk for the sake of their/the environment and find something else while regulations and inspections are being done

Conflict of interest, pure and simple. I am afraid that even our Justice System needs to be retooled. This man should be impeached for his obvious arse kissing of big oil.

The oil rigs need to be closed down. The oil people need to find new lines of work. Gov. Jindal looks like a incompetent boob , who does not have a clue on how to diversify his state economy.

His political fortune and ability to govern is and has been based on welfare from high risk oil.
He get relatively a pittance for his state from BP, 'China gets 50% royalties on every barrel found.'
Now the bubble has burst. Jindal should be recalled. At least Charlie Christ told 'big oil' to beat it and stay away from beautiful Florida. He knows there is more to his state's economy than addiction to filthy oil jobs. But Jindal like Cong. Barton is apologizing, begging and shilling for oil drilling to resume. Even after this level of damage to his state? Beat me again Bobby is acting like a battered spouse, who is still in love with his abuser. For generations his state environment may be ruined on his apparently incompetent watch. Where is the shame?

There is an article here, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bekeh-utietiang about the Niger Delta's total ruin. This is what happens. This is the swindle, when oil gets its way
with a compliant state is run by likes of Bobby Jindal.
Somebody from Current TV, please run over there to The Niger Delta and do a documentary. We need to see what the end game looks and feels like.

these people are making such a big deal of nothing. the moratorium only covered 33 out of, by my count, 3858 rigs in gulf.any thing these people can go against obama witht they do. to the extent of apologizing to p. they will sell out their mother to get him. these right wingers know they are going down in flames, and they are grasping at straws.

I love how the anointed one (Obama for you lib dummys) talks about circumventing law when he was the one who hammered Bush on not following the laws. I love two face Obama... Oh well, a few more months and Obama's free reign will be over. Then only two more tiring years of the Professor in Chief and maybe we can get someone with real leadership in the WH.

how can we allow a judge with ownership in oil companies allow to make any rulings, in their favor or without. This is insane. Never has this country been so split up along party lines. Judges as well as elected officials have only one responsibility and that is to their constituents. That goes from Senators such as Joe Barton to the lowest judge.

This is the revenge of the judges appointed by Reagan.

I realize that the President has been balancing the jobs question in the Gulf with this environmental disaster. But, the damage of the gush produces so much long term damage, that it outweighs the short term fix of jobs on risky and dangerous oil rigs.
10:03 PM on 06/22/2010
We do have the rule of law even thought this president thinks it doesn't apply to him. Hopefully his decision stands; we can't afford for this president to destroy what remains of the the gulf 's economy.

I would like you to tell me how Pres. Obama circumvent the law? How do you see him destroying what is left of the gulf coast? Did he turn on the "faucet" underwater to start the spill?
Please tell us in specific terms not generalization or repeated platitudes.

Have it go to the Supreme court if he doesn't like it. Or maybe have Congress pass a law against drilling. Barry's got a few more months with a blank check in Congress left, you libs better hope he uses it right.

Fanned! It's funny how Obama talks about abiding by the rule of law when it comes to other President's but when he doesn't get his way on something he gets every sniveling ivy league Harvard law lawyer working to bypass the law.

Just because you appear to have no intelligent thought process, trees give you the air you breathe, just so you know. so keep on drilling and when you have chemical/oil drenched rain falling on your house/car/land. then it might be time for you to care since you don't now.

>>>The Obama administration is considering a host of options, including seeking a stay from the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, in order to maintain a moratorium on deepwater drilling after it was overturned by a federal judge.>>>

Gee, this guy is really dedicated to destroying the long-term livelihoods of many Louisianans as possible. His priorities are so screwed up, it's nothing short of breathtaking. HOW often have rigs exploded down there? He doesn't have to shut down ALL the rigs in order to inspect them, and at the cost of thousands of people's livelihoods, whose JOBS depend upon those rigs.Inspect them one by one, fool.
10:11 PM on 06/22/2010
Ya think the oil companies might be able to afford to pay their employees until the moratorium is no longer deemed necessary, i.e., after careful bona fide inspection of all other wells, not rubber-stamped self-inspections. You worried about whether the poor oil companies could afford to be so benevolent?

I see you know as much about the rig industry as Obama. The rigs aren't gonna sit there. They're gonna pick up and move to some other part of the world. And they won't be back in six months. THAT'S the threat to the businesses and families whose livelihoods depend on the rigs. Try reading actual newspapers instead of bloggers' op-eds.

Great point!

It's that same lib logic that has prevented us from using less coal and more nuclear power. One "accident" causes them to wet their pants and completely shut down any discussion.
11:28 PM on 06/22/2010
Trying to follow the logic of "prevented us from using less coal and more nuclear power." Libs have prevented us from using less coal and have prevented us from using more nuclear power? Is that what you mean, that we use more coal because of libs? And use less nuclear power because of libs?
You're right, coal's still chuggin along, but the corruption revealed with the recent mining incident may prompt a cut-back on that front.
The nuclear plants in this country haven't been properly maintained or upgraded, and you're right, they should be. Suppose it was Bush and Cheney's preference for oil that prevented them from looking into the developments that have come along in nuclear power. Gates has invested in some exciting new nuclear technology.
Why is it though that conservatives have this toilet training fixation?

Absolutely. They're power of logical problem-solving is nonexistent. Young mid-eastern men are seeking to perpetrate terrorist attacks on or with airplanes. Solution? Search Grandma.
