Tiger Woods Misses Daughter Sam's Birthday For Golf: Report

Tiger Woods Daughter Sam Birthday

First Posted: 06/22/10 03:54 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:50 PM ET

Tiger Woods was thousands of miles from his daughter on her birthday, just months after vowing that he would "never miss another one," RadarOnline reports. While Woods struggled through the second day of the U.S. Open tournament at Pebble Beach on the California coast last Friday, the web site reports that his daughter Sam celebrated her third birthday far away in Florida.

In April, Woods spoke of the pain he felt after missing his son's birthday while he was in rehab following the public revelation of his wild string of affairs. "I vowed I'd never miss another one after that," he said at the time.

While Woods was referring to his son's birthday, one might assume that the same principle would apply to his three-year-old daughter. It seems that competing in one of golf's most prestigious tournaments trumped his familial obligations, however.

This development may be the latest indication that Woods and wife Elin Nordegren (PHOTOS) are headed toward a long-rumored divorce. It was reported earlier in June that Nordegren may be seeking full custody of the children.

golf, perhaps; fatherhood, looks bleak.

How dare a professional golfer play golf? It's how he makes a living. It's the profession that he has chosen to make his career, his life's work. Do other professionals in other fields miss their kids birthdays, of course they do. She is three, she will never remember if he was there or not, unless Mommy keeps reminding her in later years.

If Elin cared about her kids, she would have flown with them to the tournanment so that Tiger's son could see his dad play golf and then eat cake after the round. It's time for Elin to forgive and stand by her man.

It has nothing to do with Tiger. It is a maturity issue and putting the kids first. The guy was playing in the US Open a very important tournament--give me a break.

Barely cared before and certainly don't care anymore... WAY more important things to think about (planetary extinction, corporate uber-greed, political stupidity, etc)

HP is way behind on this story. I just commented with some breaking news and they deleted it. Guess they'll have an article about it in a couple of days.

When Tiger had his news conference many months ago and stated to the world that he didn't want to miss another of his children's birthday-- he was hoping that Elin would forgive, take him back, not divorce him. This appears not to be the case. Therefore these kids now find themselves in a broken home which means that birthdays won't be celebrated with both parents at the same time/date/place. If they were still together, Elin would have been at the tournament with his daughter so they all could celebrate together-- I doubt many people would have expected her to do this considering what's happened in their marriage-- but she could have. He could have missed the US Open-- but that still wouldn't mean that Elin would have allowed him to celebrate their daughter's birthday on the actual date together. Come on people they are separated.

Really? How about if the parents exercised some maturity for their children and showed them how to act like responsible, caring parents by putting aside their differences for the children. The problem with this society and divorce is that the parties are supposed to be hostile toward each other not civil. It is one of the ugliest things and it is hurtful and disruptive for the children.

The only thing I can think of his infidelity to his wife. I guess according to gumbo1049 there are tons of loser men out there considering how many cheaters there are.

Really Tiger may have failed in one aspect of his life-- but that doesn't mean he is a total loser.

I never heard anyone ask Tiger if he was going to be more attentive to his childrens' needs and feelings now that he is the "new and improved," model. He kinda came up with that on his own. Apparently it sounded good at the time and was expedient to his purpose. Perhaps, he should have thought it through, but then, perhaps he should have thought a few things through. The U.S. Open is a major and there are a finite number left in Tiger's career. The number one, most important thing, in Tiger's life (other than getting off) is to break Nicklaus's record for major wins, and he is running out of opportunities. He MUST play in every major, and I can think of few reasons, in his mind, that would keep him from it.

Your post is riddled with interesting "truths."

"The U.S. Open is a major and there are a finite number left in Tiger's career."
Yep... but only one family, one daughter and only one third b'day. Miss a couple of more and they quit missing you.

"The number one, most important thing, in Tiger's life (other than getting off) is to break Nicklaus's record for major wins..."
Yep, family was always second *at best* and usually third. Appears that's still true.

"He MUST play in every major, and I can think of few reasons, in his mind, that would keep him from it."
Which of course reflects the veracity of *anything* that has come out of his mouth as it pertains to improving himself and relations within his family.

How do you know for a fact that he missed his daughter's birthday? Perhaps secretly they were together; perhaps they all agreed to celebrate it another day (most of my birthdays have been celebrated on days close to my actual birthday date-- and I think I turned out fine). Maybe today or in the future, his daughter would rather him play the US Open and celebrate her birthday a couple of days later then have him totally miss it. Maybe his children understand their father's chosen career-- his career was in place before their births. When Elin married Tiger and had children she knew the importance of golf in his life-- I don't think she has a problem spending the money golf entitled her to. For him to truly have missed her birthday would mean he never acknowledged or celebrated it-- we know this wasn't the case by pictures of Tiger and his daughter together on Monday or Tuesday.

Wow, what a god you are.

I agree this is why he shouldn't have been trying to appease us by doing a press conference. He should have know in this media age every word, remark he makes will be gone over with an extra fine toothed comb. Hence this article.

A compromise would be: "Sorry honey... Daddy's got to work," or we're not going to have a roof over our heads nor food on the table.

IMO, a compromise is *not* "Daddy's trying to break some other man's golf record."
10:24 AM on 06/23/2010
Come on cybolt, we don't know what he said give the guy a break he has put himself out there (press conference) and addresses us all. What more do you want from the guy?
I'm sure they're are some regret in both you and I lives.
He's human he loves his kids. Before you ask I don't condone what he did as far as the cheating. I do have a problem with him feeling he needed to address society.
Respectfully let's agree to disagree.

Exactly, it's not like if he skips the thing that he won't be able to afford a birthday cake for her.

I think what makes this news is that Tiger vowed he'd never miss another one. Had he not said that in April would this even be a story, I doubt it.
