The Motorola Droid 2 is expected to be announced later today at an event hosted by Verizon and Motorola.

CNET
will be liveblogging the Verizon Droid event, which begins at 10AM PT on June 23.

Verizon Executive Vice President John Stratton, Google Vice President of Engineering Andy Rubin, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen are all expected to speak at the (likely) Droid 2 unveiling.

Pictures and video allegedly showing the Droid 2 have been leaked in advance of its official release.

A clip purporting to show the Droid 2 compared the previous Droid to the Droid 2, with the two handsets' outside forms "virtually identical" save for changes to the navigation pad and buttons.

"Performance is the main area of improvement over the original," said Android and Me, which posted the video.

The Droid 2--rumored to have a 1 GHz processor-- should be faster than the original Motorola Droid, which is equipped with a 550 MHz processor. It also has about twice the memory of the first-generation Droid.
