Motorola Droid X Release (PHOTOS, VIDEO): Verizon Gets New Droid Smartphone

Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/23/10 01:12 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:50 PM ET

The new Motorola Droid X is official!

Verizon and Motorola announced the new Droid device at an event Wednesday. Some of the phone's features include: an 8-megapixel camera; a 4.3-inch screen with 848x480-pixel display; multitouch; GPS, Bluetooth; WiFi hotspot for up to five devices; and SWYPE, which will come pre-loaded on the phone. The new Motorola Droid X, which is to be released July 25, is shipping with Android 2.1, but Android 2.2 will reportedly be available this summer.

The Droid X's price is $199 after a $100 rebate--Verizon's upgrade policy for the Droid X will be like AT&T's for the iPhone 4: any Verizon user whose contract expires in 2010 will be eligible for upgrade. The WiFi hotspot capability will cost $20 a month for 2GB of data, and the phone's unlimited data plan runs $29.99.

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha emphasized the Droid X's call quality--perhaps hoping to exploit the main weakness of Apple's iPhone and AT&T--highlighting the Droid X's "high performance diversity antennas" and noting "We pay attention to this, because we realize that people still use their phones.. as phones."

Droid X, as meriane has so astutely pointed out, will be forgotten in a couple of months, replaced by yet another Droid with a few more bells and whistles.

I feel for those who've already bought the EVO and are now locked in to a two-year contract. By the time it expires, they will have released eight more Droids.

Choice is good, until you commit.

Apple users would carry a bag of cement on their shoulders all day if it had an Apple logo on it.

Apple are geniuses for realising that intellectually challenged people wanted computers that looked good so even if they couldn't use them they could at least be fashionable.

If you want a new phone to help you be more productive then get a Droid, if you want a new phone to help you be more fashionable then get an iphone.

Can we not put all articles about Apple products in the fashion and entertainment section, and articles about other smart-phones in the technology section? It gets tiresome reading intellectually challenged people's comments supporting products they cant even operate let alone criticize.

Wow, I've read a few of your rants, er comments, and they make me wonder, did Apple make you stop breastfeeding too soon? Your insults, incoherent challenges and outright animosity are outrageous when you consider they are directed towards a group of people simply because of the electronic device they have decided to use. I don't understand this level of anger simply because someone wants to use an iphone rather than a droid device.

I have been witness to the inception and development of the internet, Steve Jobs is taking what other people already developed years ago, popularising it and claiming ownership.

If you knew the motives of the original developers you would understand.

If you were familiar with the industry you would know that barfing in someone's lunch is outrageous and flaming Apple Fanbois an aperitif.

It is funny to read the debate about which phone is better. I, myself, have an Android OS phone. I do love my phone. But to be perfectly honest, if Blackberry (which is the number 1 phone in the world) had a phone that could do what Android phones do, I would still be a Blackberry user.

I just got a Droid in March after waiting a long time. I got it free which was cool. But if this phone has a Qwerty keyboard, I'm seriously thinking about wasting some money on it. Does anybody know if it does?

Nope. No keyboard. But, it does come with Swype, that enables you to type faster on its virtual keyboard.

htc is pumping these phones out with the same internals but different software placement to make it look new. Android is a good cheap OS made by many hands, those many hands cause problems. Plus Android OS is boring.
10:35 AM on 06/24/2010
Um this is a Motorola phone.

And how is the Android OS boring? At least you can easily customize the interface and look to your liking, instead of being stuck w/ page after page of 4x4 grids of icons a la iOS...

Yeah I was going to say the same thing. Android OS allows you to be creative and adventurous. OS4 puts you in a box and lets you do whatever you want, as long as it is in the box.

i wonder if there will ever be an iphone killer, just because name recognition is everything.this thing looks like a brick.
10:37 AM on 06/24/2010
There's not going to be a single phone that is an iPhone killer ... however with high-end Android phones being released on every major carrier, Android as a whole will continue to gain marketshare on the iPhone. Nothing is going to "kill" the iPhone, just because in an open market there is plenty of room for different options...

That thing is HUGE. At some point we are going to have to drop the word "phone". How about we follow England and start calling them mobiles. They're basically a mobile computer.

The miniaturization is fascinating. Eventually they'll be fast-linked to a super-server of sorts or our home computer and the phone/mobile will not need to store anything as it does currently. Right at our fingertips.

We already renamed them into smartphones. No additional changes needed until we stop using them for calls.

Superior call quality from a cell phone? What will they think of next!

I can vouch, for as far as boasting on the Internet goes, for call quality being excellent. Number of dropped/lost calls in 7 months is Zero.

I'm leaning that way too. I've been leery of the touch screen keyboard. I really like having a real qwerty keyboard that is responsive. But this phone looks really awesome. I might switch if it's as responsive as they claim.

I want one! I've been good this year Santa!

I have a Mac laptop and desktop and have been using a Blackberry for years. Have yet to find a program that effectively syncs my phone with my computers - the last one I used wiped my calendar and erased most of my contacts. I've been thinking about switching from Verizon to AT&T and the new iPhone in a few months when our contract is up and the iPhone supply meets the demand. Does anybody know yet if the X is Mac compatible?

"Does anybody know yet if the X is Mac compatible?"

As a general matter, Droid phones are Mac compatible.

Android phones in general rarely need to synced w/ your computer... contacts, calendar, etc. are all synced w/ the Google cloud. I have a Hero and rarely plug into my computer. But as far as moving music, pictures, etc. to and from the phone and computer, it should work fine on a Mac as it's connection is just USB.

I got the Droid the first week of Feb. The following week the price dropped $100, and now this! And I'm locked in for 2 years. Grrrrr.

And guys, stop the debate. The Iphone has only come up to Droid standards with the Iphone4. It's about time. Now if they can just offer it on a decent carrier....
08:45 AM on 06/24/2010
Dream on. Android was created by mimicking Apple. Apple is the one who created ALL standards.

09:08 AM on 06/24/2010
Yeah, except Apple is relying on those standards to continue to sell marginally improved phones. And there is a reason that the 4 is coming out after the Evo.
10:43 AM on 06/24/2010
Yea... except most of the new "magical" features for iOS 4 are just Apple playing catchup to the last few versions of Android (multitasking, folders, backgrounds, etc. etc.)
