University Of Texas Holds Forum To Discuss Dorm Named For KKK Leader

Posted: Updated:

Emotions were taut at a recent forum to discuss renaming Simkins Hall, a University of Texas dorm recognizing former KKK leader William Simkins.

The Daily Texan reports that most of those in attendance were in favor of giving the dorm a new name. But others dissented, such as business junior John Goodman:

"We're being way too politically correct right now," [he] said. "Even though [Simkins] was successful in the KKK, he was also successful in a lot of other things."

Despite audience members heckling him, he continued, "[The dorm] is not in his honor; it's just a stupid little dorm that no one wants to stay in."

The university will hold another forum next week, after which a recommendation will be made to the school's board of regents.
