BP Oil Dotting Gulf Coast Beaches, Beachgoers' Feet (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/24/10 03:35 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:55 PM ET

Wow. Over at the Village Voice's Runnin' Scared blog, Foster Kamer has this video shot by YouTube user "CopperTheRabbitDog," who finds himself on Destin Beach on Florida's Gulf Coast and finds it dotted with goops of oil. From a distance, all seems perfectly normal, until you zoom in and see the alien chunks of sludge on the sand.

Oh, and then you come to the little girl, begging her mother to get the oil off of her foot.

Kamer has more, here. CNN notes that the Pensacola Bay Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has said, "Depending on the wind direction, tar balls may float ashore in Destin or Ft. Walton Beach later in the week, but cleaning crews are standing by." I don't see any cleaning crews, do you?

And this is great news, too! "The Boiling Oily Beaches of Pensacola".

"WATCH: BP Oil Dotting Gulf Coast Beaches, Beachgoers' Feet"

We're all Texans now.

The coast of Texas, north of Padre Island, has long been a vast expanse of tar wads what weren't there when I ran barefoot through clean white sand as a kid, up and down Galveston, Pirates Beach, Matagorda Island, long before we began to keep a can of lighter fluid by the door to rub all the tar off  Read More...

Nice parents. Nice Tourism Bureaus. Let the kids play in the Corexit and Oil tainted waters so they can be exposed to almost a dozen chemical compounds that are KNOWN cancer causing agents. Don't let the tourists know that gulf water is, if properly graded on an EPA scale, loaded with so many chemicals and VOC's that it would qualify as a Superfund site. No that's bad for business! The public be dammed let them develop CANCER as a direct consiquence to exposure to the Post-BP carcinogeous Gulf of Mexico, there's money to be made! Insane. Pure cold-pressed insanity on a grand scale.

Hideous example of people pretending life is as usual because they cannot bear the reality of their lives..... These children might as well be pelican hatchlings. A lot of good having human parents does, eh?

Why help yourself when you can go on CNN and complain about how all those people trying to help you are not helping you the right way and all that money being spent to help you is not enough?

I think a cronic complaints fever washed up with the oil!

I work at a resort on the beach here in the Florida Panhandle and see people swimming in oil infested water everyday. I see children coming out covered in oil while their parents are busy getting drunk. It is a shame. Oil is being tracked from the beach onto the property where of course I have to clean it up without any training or safety gear. Unfortunately, we live in a country where money always trumps safety. That is the reason for the oil spill and that is the reason that local interests will do everything possible to ensure their customers come spend money even if it is dangerous. I do not want to lose my job which is possible because of this spill but I certainly do not want to keep my job at the detriment to other peoples health.

why was the beach opened? there was no cleanup crews. i felt bad for that kid. how are they going to get the oil off her feet.

I feel bad for the kid too - having ignorant parents who allow their kids to play in it!

Someone in an earlier post said this is not new, that they had oil on their feet when they went to the beach in the past, it was a common occurence. I have lived near and gone to the beach my entire life and I have NEVER had oil on my feet at the beach.

I SUFFERED HELL through the 2000 STOLEN ELECTION here in Florida, in fact, I was back in college full time... taking courses towards a POLITICAL SCIENCE degree, trying to understand
"WHY are Americans SO STUPID as to TURN THEIR BACK on "Liberalism" and the economics and policies of the New Deal.....
....WHY were SO MANY MILLIONS of Americans AGREENG with the RIGHT-WING ASSAULT on those very "Liberal" programs that had brought 5 full decades of increasing economic growth, at least compared to the Great Depression?
Of course a huge part of the problem was the Well Oiled Republican & corporate Media Machine, which turned on Bill Clinton with a vengance, every Clinton FAUX-PAS was AMPLIFIED into a MAJOR 'SCANDAL' by the Rethuglicans - AND the NEW YORK SLIMES and WASHINGTON cowardly POST - including trying to make the Clintons hosting guests for a night at the White House into "LINCOLN BEDROOM SCANDAL" (later, the Times, Post, & DC/national-media would WHITEWASH George W. Bush giving a GAY MALE PROSTITUTE, "Jeff Ganon" a serial WhiteHouse press pass - even though Ganon was using an alias, and had an UP and RUNNING GAY PROSTITUTE WEB SITE!!!)

Even WITH the ABJECT LIES of the NYTimes, WashPost, and "major media", it was still clear that MILLIONS of Americans & Floridians had NO RESPECT for ENVIRONMENTAL rules & regulations...
...the parable of Clevland's RIVER CATCHING ON FIRE, and Florida's FRAGILE, VULNERABLE marine resources nothwithstanding.

Well, Bush-2000 voters, & Florida papers - HERE is YOUR ANSWER.

If they are useless as some of our conservative friends are trying to make out, then why did Jindal ask for them, and why has he already deployed ~1000?

Clowns love to make silly statements that have no merit to divert from the point when their side is shown to be at fault.

Yep, I'm looking at you drbillybob.

It is so lame that that is the best rebuke you can come up with to continue to make this all President Obama's fault.

Our beautiful gulf waters, our white sugar beaches and all it's amazing wildlife... reduced to a
dead, toxic wasteland. This is only the beginning, wait until the smoke clears. Things are far
worse than we can even imagine. Wake up people... it's time to make some major changes!

i find the "cleaning crews" kind of disturbing anyway -- picking up tarballs so you can't see them -- out of sight, out of mind. the united states is so obessive about appearances that we forget reality like if tarballs are on the beach they are in the water too.

Most of the posters on this subject must live in a wilderness. There has been oil on beaches for many many years. It gets under the sand from the tide action. I can recall, being I live in Florida, looking at my feet, seeing oil and not know where it come from. So chill people and go back to blaming the President for everything.

What I get is calling these little girls parents’ idiots because she stepper in oil is not called for. Every beach in this country has had oil on it at one time or another from passing ships and the like. That oil is from ships flushing out their fuel tanks with seawater or using seawater to ballast the ship until it is refueled then pumping that water out into the sea, which also is against the law and contaminates Florida’s beautiful beaches That of course has nothing to do with the BP gusher which is an out right crime. I would like to have a nickel for every time I have gotten crude oil on my feet. And, each time it has happened the words that come from mouth can’t be typed in this post. In no way was I making light of the BP crime I just don’t think calling that little girls parents’ idiots fits the bill.

WTF is wrong with these parents? Oil on your feet is the least of your problems - if they go in water, that oil is going to be in their hair and bathing suits. How are you going to get that out?

Hey, buddy, can you spare a micro-bio?
05:40 PM on 06/25/2010
How are you going to get that out? Probably the way it has always been gotten out, with another form of oil, namely soap. Either that or the kids will simply flop around on the sand for awhile and die. Good grief.
08:02 PM on 06/25/2010
soap does not get the oil off. we used gasoline.
09:44 AM on 06/26/2010
Allowing their kids to play there should be criminal and considered "child neglect".

Unfortunately, those parents don't appear to be too bright. I'd predict that if it gets really bad, they'd send their kids to a wildlife rescue & treatment centers.

Wonder how much oilglobs these kids are ingesting when they swim- little kids always end up gulping water when they play in the water .... but Fla officials care less about long term consequences and more about tourist dollars

So moms are just packing Goo Gone with the Sun screen? - Thats a chemical bomb probably worse than oil

Use baby oil to get the 'tar-y' gunk off.

Learned this while living in Galveston and dealing with beach tarballs --- 35 years ago.

Who in their right mind would take their children to play on an oil-covered beach.
