Colbert Rips Glenn Beck For His "Wildly Important" Work (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/24/10 11:10 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:50 PM ET

Colbert Beck

Colbert dedicated a substantial chunk of his show last night to mocking Glenn Beck, who recently justified planning his rally on the exact date and location of Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream Speech."

Joked Colbert: "Finally, someone is bringing "Martin Luther King's movement back to its conservative white roots."

Responding to Beck's claim that it was "divine providence" that his event landed on the same day, Colbert said, "Personally, I take everything Glenn says on faith...because there's never any evidence to back up his claims."

But what really caught Colbert's attention was Beck's long-winded tale about being approached at the Vatican by unnamed man, who praised the Fox News personality for his contributions to society. Luckily for us, Colbert tracked him down, and it was none other than Father Guido Sarducci, the chain-smoking priest played by comedian Don Novello.

Turns out he did in fact say his work was wildly important. The only problem? He thought he was talking to Jeff Beck. That guy can wail.

Whenever I ask somebody if they're a fan of Glenn Beck I get a horrified reaction. They look at me as if I was suggesting that they like to smash themselves in the genitals nightly with a hammer. He has millions of fans, but nobody really ever wants to admit to it. Kind of like the way the Bee Gees used to sell gold and platinum records but nobody would ever admit to enjoying their falsetto siren disco singing.

I'm a fan of Glenn Beck and the Bee Gees. Maybe you're asking the wrong people

Really? Good for you.

I can't stand Beck, not because of anything on his show, which in all honesty I don't watch enough to form an opinion on beyond the out of context clips that I've seen. To be fair, he might make a lot of sense and just have an occasional session of the crazy. I don't like him because when I've seen him he makes such an effort to appear like a 'down home everyman' kind of guy. I find him just as false as those wannabe gangsta rappers who wartle on about their hoods and how bad it is living in the slums, yet make millions and have bodyguards. Beck is a multi millionaire many times over. I don't begrudge him his money, just that I think it's a factor that people don't take into account. Same deal with Limbough (Shouldn't he be in Costa Rica?). They hardly have a 'common' perspective on things.

As for the Bee Gees, I missed their heyday, but have to admit, it's fun music.

Glenn Beck could be a misunderstood genius. Even with all of his ranting, crying and trying to set himself on fire, he manages to get the feeble-minded viewers, at Faux, to buy gold at three times market value and they walk away feeling they made a good investment. He is becoming a multimillionaire and laughing all the way to the bank. You might say he is enjoying the “American dream” republican style. There is something to be said for being the Harold Hill of cable news.

Delusions of grandeur interspersed by lucid intervals of madness...the interview was hilarious. I used to like 'Father Guido Sarducci' on SNL. Glad he is still funny.

I just find it hard to believe that anyone actually takes Beck seriously. Who are these people and how can scientists study them.

I saw Jeff Beck perform a couple weeks ago; he still has it. And, so does Don Novello. I remember his Father Guido SNL appearances. I haven't seen him perform in too long. Thanks, Colbert, for giving his exposure again.

Glenn Beck's tirades and pomposity are begging for this kind of treatment. Of course it's Beck himself who has to mention the "wildly important" comment at the Vatican. How full of yourself can you be? Sadly, this does not turn everyone off or set off any alarms for some people. Not only is this guy a shyster. He's a bad one.

Stephen's take on it and having Father Guido Sarducci on......priceless!!!

The crazies are out...Beck, Palin, Bachmann, Fox news...and all those people who are their ardent fans! The rest of the world will be right in thinking that despite our American might and power, we have some of the dumbest people on earth.

I was so happy to see Don Novello in his Father Guido Sarducci persona...I was a big fan. He is as funny as ever!

I second that! I had not seen Don in a while, and it was wonderful seeing him still "inna toppa form."
Finding out Father Sarducci is the Vatican reviewer recommending "The Blues Bros," makes it all make sense now. The "Beck as Trevi Fountain" quip is priceless!
