For Profit Colleges

Inside Higher Ed:

Two weeks ago, the hub of the federal government's scrutiny of for-profit higher education was the U.S. Department of Education, where a team of staffers were putting the finishing touches on a set of proposed regulations aimed at reining in abuses of the federal financial aid program.

Abruptly, though, since the draft rules were released to reporters and Congressional staffers on June 15, the activity has moved to Capitol Hill -- a change in location that has been accompanied by an equally sudden and stark shift in the focus and tone of the debate about for-profit colleges and universities.

For profit Universities should be illegal.... period! They are a blight on our education system.

Agreed. I recently resigned from a for profit institution because I was weary of attempting to teach students who attended for any one of several inappropriate reasons: ( 1 ) To earn supplemental state and federal funding over and above educational costs just to defray their living expenses, or ( 2 ) To enjoy the lack of academic standards at the college. Many of the students are refugees from a local community college, which proved too daunting for them, or ( 3 ) To slide through classes due to the absence of attendance rules, where instructors are forbidden to independently drop slackers.

For profits, in large part, are a higher education joke and a cruel hoax played upon the students, who do not realize that a degree from one of these mills is virtually worthless on the job market.

Good for you! I respect your move to quit and the integrity that move was based on. Definitely fanned. The percentage of students that graduate from these institutions is abysmal as well. I think Phoenix only graduates 14% of their students. They are obviously all about getting the money from the student and running with it rather than worrying about their student body's success.
