The anti-stigma campaign featuring Glenn Close, her bipolar sister Jessie and schizophrenic nephew Calen recently won a Silver Telly Award, which honors the best in cable television commercials and programs, video and film productions, as well as work created for the Web. The award was given to the watsons, the creative agency behind the bringchange2mind PSA. Director Ron Howard donated his talent to creating the PSA as did John Mayer, who handed over the use of his song "Say" to the project.

I find the language above offensive. Entirely so.

I once worked in a group home caring for people with multiple severe special needs (mental retardation, autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, paraplegic, blindness). My clients gave me more than I could give them, they helped me connect with me. They were fully human and helped me see myself fully human, completely comfortable within myself and my own multiple conditions (depression, post traumatic stress disorder, endometriosis, multiple grief). I had been mentally abused by a psychologist from when I was 15 to 23 (he worked on grooming me for his own needs), and I had other harmful experiences. I’m now in my mid life, I get well and get not well, much like my other condition (endometriosis) some moments/months I’m fine some not. Miscommunication & misdiagnosis harm, compassion & comprehension help :)

I think it's a great idea to show mentally ill people accompanied by their loved ones...all too often, people never even consider the mentally ill as humans, with the same needs, loved ones, and experiences as everyone else.
Great, lovely ad campaign.

I really like that the ad was included the caretakers of mentally ill people as well. Being a caretaker for someone with mental health issues is at time exhausting, thankless, and very isolating. Many times the caretaker might feel the need to cover for the illness by avoiding friends and family and focusing entirely on the condition, losing sight even of the individual for whom they are caring for. The stigma of having a mentally ill family member along with the stress of daily care taking can have horrible effects on the mental health of the caregiver as well.

Brilliant. Just love this. Good advertising campaigns make me happy.

I love this advert and am pleased it won an award. There's all kinds of crazy in my family, and we've never hidden from it. (I have never been afraid to use words like psychotic, manic-depressive, dissociative, etc when talking about mental illness, and while it sometimes shocks people when you describe your baby sister as a sociopath, it's not a secret. I'm not ashamed. Why should we be?) In fact, I've found that it's the people who pretend there's nothing wrong who suffer the most from mental illnesses - theirs and others'. I love my crazy family. Keep speaking up and speaking out, bringchange2mind.org!

Glad to know I'm not alone. My family member that is bipolar, loves me most the time, but when she is manic, hates me with a passion. I can hardy bear it. The pain is so great. It is making me feel crazy and I am sane.

Close did a little TOO GOOD a job of feigning mental illness in "Fatal Attraction, IMHO.

I'm scared of that woman.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Can she be THAT good an actress? :-)

Glenn Close was frightening playing that character and other slightly mad people, but in real life she is a very sane and loving, gentle and kind woman. Hard to believe, but some people really can act!
