Advanced technology like turning our huge outpouring of CO2 into fuel is a huge step forward. The U,S. should be taking an active role in Dr. Liao's research.

With solar, wind, tidal, and geothermal energy sources avalilable, why is it taking us so long to achieve energy independence?

It is a step in the right direction, but although using algae to convert CO2 into alcohol fuels can reduce our need for imported petroleum, it will not decrease our dependence on the internal combustion engine.

You remind me of the old joke that ends , I know what kind of girl you are , now we're just haggling over the price.
We are . of course , dependent on motors , but not necessarily on piston-driven gasoline motors. Check out a company called Capstone Turbine. Also , electric motors deliver more usable power. There are and will be other types of motors in our future. It's only a matter of conquering the fear of the future.

If Brazil can be run on ethanol, then so can every other country. We don't need oil for fuel.

But aren't they getting the ethanol , in large part , by destroying the rain forest? And aren't we getting ours from corn , which requires prodigious amounts of water and pesticides and is a food staple? Not that these interim steps are totally bad , but they are not the answer , IMO.

What's incredible to me is to think that processing oil cost nothing. What does it cost to create a gallon of gas. This is never discussed. I would also like to note what the processing and use of petroleum has done to the environment in this country. Just because it's past does not mean it didn't happen. This is why it's nearly impossible to talk about a change in our energy usage. The change is not going to be free but it is needed.

Comparing this technology to the use of corn to create a fuel is a ploy to discount it. Listen for it cause we will be hearing allot about it. Conservative by definition means 'no change' Those that support the oil and coal industry are VERY conservative.

Gandhi didn't like your attitude either!

Fabulous Idea. I think Obama should prioritize Federal funding for the development of this as an alternative to gasoline. Would be an incredible breakthrough and a slap in the face to big oil, which is destroying our planet.

Why wait ten years, let's take the subsidies from the oil industry and pump that money into this project and get it more streamlined. Let's put hundreds of engineers and researchers into this.

I agree and it seems to me all it would really take is for the department of energy to do it.

I agree. This is the best time in our history to implement this. Obama needs to start focusing on biofuels. The future is biofuels and with it are jobs for Americans here in the USA.

This is some of the best news lately, to collect pollution at the source and convert it into biofuels solves two problems in one unit! I hope this technology is well supported by government .

Big oil will be buying this one up.....just like it has with all other alternatives to oil...
01:07 PM on 06/25/2010
Sad but true. The one thing that I never truly understood about some of the Big oil companies that do go around buying this stuff is why they don't start producing it to replace oil. I mean think of how much they would make how much they would save not having to pay for exploration and trying to operate and in less than hospitable situations.

They wont' do it because there is some politician or aristocrat who wont be getting their kickbacks. Think of how many politicians are on the payroll of these companies and what they would lose in the end.
