Ivory Coast & North Korea Eliminated From World Cup

AP/Huffington Post   JOHN PYE   First Posted: 06/25/10 01:04 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:55 PM ET

NELSPRUIT, South Africa — Ivory Coast bowed out of the World Cup in style.

Needing an offensive show and a little bit of luck to make the second round, the Elephants got the offense but not the luck.

Yaya Toure, Koffi Romaric N'Dri and Salomon Kalou each scored Friday in a 3-0 win over North Korea, thrilling a pro-Ivory Coast crowd.

The only problem was that the Ivorians needed Portugal to lose to Brazil, then had to make up a nine-goal difference with the Portuguese to have a chance of moving on.

And Portugal tied Group G winner Brazil 0-0 to advance.

"Our World Cup is over today," Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba said. "But I think we can be proud of what we did against Portugal and against Brazil – even if we lost – and today.

"It was difficult for us to go through, and I think the FIFA rankings have been respected," Drogba said. "We are disappointed, but at the same time we cannot be too disappointed when we're in a group like this."

Earlier in group play, Ivory Coast tied Portugal 0-0 and lost to Brazil 3-1.

North Korea lost all three of its matches, giving up 12 goals and scoring just one in its first World Cup appearance since 1966. The team from the isolated, communist regime was a tournament curiosity, and never proved to be anything more.

The Koreans put up their best effort in a 2-1 loss to Brazil, then were routed by Portugal 7-0 and beaten soundly by the more physical Ivorians.

"It has laid the foundation for us to grow in the future. So this has been a very useful experience for us," North Korea coach Kim Jong Hun said. "Up until the last minute of the match, they really put in all their effort. I think that's a very positive trait."

Ivory Coast attacked all day, outshooting the Koreans 28-9.

"I think the players were very, very good," Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said. "It's a pity we have to leave, because this team is getting better and better every session. But that's life. We're out. We have to accept that."

Ghana is the only one of six African teams in the World Cup to advance to the round of 16.

There were large groups of Ivorians in the crowd, wearing orange shirts and dipping and swaying in unison to the beat of African drums and the constant drone of vuvuzelas. One section, on the top tier of Mbombela Stadium, even included a mascot: a dancing white elephant, complete with long white trunk and flapping ears.

The fans came expecting goals, and Ivory Coast kept them on their feet.

The Elephants opened the scoring in the 14th when Arthur Boka sent a low cross into the area and Toure neatly deflected it past North Korean goalkeeper Ri Yong Guk.

Romaric hit the far post with a long-range drive from the right in the 17th, catching Ri completely off guard, but was on target with a header in the 20th after Drogba's powerful drive cannoned off the underside of the crossbar.

Kalou scored the final goal in the 82nd.

"If you look at the three games we played, they should be very proud of themselves," Eriksson said, "and the country should be proud of them."

I think that both of them, Ivory Cost and North Korea are the same, Bad players, although Drogba is the best player, and plays in the famous group, chelsea.

Did you notice the thousands of North Korean fans rooting for their team or was it just a handful of Chinese that were paid to root for the glorius North Koreans?

Hopefully the Dear Leader was distracted with his air guitar when these guys got home and didn't take the losses out on them.

Can people keep politics out of sports? Why must athletes who work all their lives answer for politicians who they have little to do with?.
Only 32 nationals teams, out of hundreds, made it into the World Cup bracket rounds. So applaud the athletes and keep your comments about N. Korea's government for a more appropriate thread.

Frankly, the N. Korean athletes should be applauded for making it so far on so few resources. And yes, the US showing in past World Cups hasn't been particularly glorious, so we should be the last one to throw stones.

Say what you will about N Korea's awful preformance. They played with dignity. Fair and honest, playing a clean game and respectful of their opponents and officials. Didn't see them making cheap dives like some teams - hint France and Italy. Didn't see them getting in feuds on and off the field, or bringing past grudges to the match. Didn't see their coach refuse to shake hands with the winning coach, which we saw in two other matches.

I hope they are received well when they get home.

As for the folks laughing about their plight, remember they have been out playing before, won some, lost some. It is a national team and they will be back on the pitch again

Amazing that the North Koreans made it. I hope they and their families will be allowed to continue to eat in spite of the fact that the team lost.

North Korea lost in group but South Korea and Japan won and these two groups continue to play in round of 1/16. You know most people look down on the Asia player saying that Asia people have no ability to play in Well-Cup. But now Asia countries can defeat or win both Europe, Africa, and American Continents.I do hope that Both S-Korea and Japan will play in round of 1/8. Please stop looking down on Asian.

It's the white way to look down on others. They don't do it openly against blacks anymore, but it's still open season on Asians.

By making such a ridiculous generalization about whites, you have sunk to the level of the very bigots you criticize. R@cist behavior cannot be stopped by more r@cist behavior, that's preposterous.

Too bad for Ivory Coast. They have a great national side, but it's just dumb luck they had to end up in a group with both Brazil and Portugal. The fact that North Korea was in the group as well only made it worse for the Elephants because they had to overcome an impossible goal differential. How North Korea was in the World Cup at all is a mystery to me.

Ivory coast and North Korean eliminated the World Cup. Oh, how is unlucky of Ivory coast? this country want the Portugal and Brave not to be draw. So this team will go the second fixture of World Cup..Unfortunately, it eliminated now....So try again Ivory Coast!!! i think this team is a good team of Africa.

I hope someone inspects the play they are retuning on. I hope it doesn't become "ill" fated.

It take more that cult devotion and national rituals to compete at an elite level on the World Cup. The best teams in the tounament are teams that are fielding players that are on clubs outside their own borders. Soccer play like most skill is enhanced by exposure to diverse competitors for extended periods of time. I am glad North Korea was invited, however without their players joining clubs overseas, their appearance on the global stage, every four years will be greeted with the ritual and cult-like ass kicking.

I agree;poor guys;probably got poor training and support. What a disgrace that such a country even exists. We really are fortunate to be Americans even if we have to temporarily put up with Republicans.

Next NK strategy: threaten the opposition with one of those nuclear devices they've been itching to use...

Actually it's the US that is the only country in the world that used nuclear weapons, and it did so on civilians. Shame on you for not knowing your own history.

That is true, however, this isn't the past we are living in, it is the present. Presently, we don't want lunatics that threaten their neighbors to have nukes. It's non-negotiable. America has made many mistakes, and while many people like to point these shortcomings out, it is funny how people overlook all of the positive things America has done for the world. The majority of 20th and 21srt century advancements have been made by Americans. We wouldn't even be on the internet discussing this without the brilliance of American minds and workers. I know it's fashionable to attack America, but that doesn't mean it's always the wise thing to do.

Yes, I can see how the only interpretation of my joke would be that I don't know the US's history of being the only country so far to use nuclear devices during war. That must be it. And I must be wrong that North Korea has threatened to use theirs many times, using very colorful language, to turn both South Korea, Japan, the US, etc. into wastelands. Or possibly you missed that part of current history.
