Most Followed On Twitter: #140 Most POPULAR Tweeters

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/25/10 07:54 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:55 PM ET

So long Billionaire Boys Club, say goodbye to the "Most Exclusive Club in the World." There's a new, more exclusive stratosphere to puncture: Twitter's most-followed users. We've collected the 140 most popular characters, bloggers, celebrities, athletes, actors and politicians -- based on number of followers -- in one place.

Sorry, in advance, to such Twitter luminaries as Conan O'Brien, Newt Gingrich, and Twitter's own Ev -- even with 1 million-plus followers, they still don't make the list.

Vote on your favorites, #followfriday their latest tweets and follow HuffPost's list of the top 140 tweeters! And while we're at it, #followfriday @HuffingtonPost, @HuffPostTech, and @AriannaHuff.

There are a lot of names on this list I do not recognize, and there are a lot of names I do recognize and wonder why anyone would want to hear what they have to say about anything.

But what really mystifies me is who has time for all the interruptions these tweets must cause?

Still, it is a technology that has produced some good, facts from Iran's election for example, so the tech world marches on without me, at least in this case.

twitter is just another power structure

"oh yeah? How about I tweet that you did that? You want all my followers to know this?"

It's becoming a sick, sick, sick world.

Sometimes I ask myself- what will be people be saying in 40 years about this past decade? Will be interesting for those who live to see it.

I think if I were there, I would say this was the point where humanity turned from self-indulged, egoistic, weak-minded, ill-nurtured, ill-natured and went to a higher state of conciousness that includes righteous philosophy and spirituality which guides us to a peaceful, loving and bountiful earth. We stole this land from those wise Natives, perverted humanity and polluted the landscape. It's high time we returned to that way of life and use science & technology in a responsible and mature way. The world today is a gaping chasm spewing oil and Corexit 9500.

What's the point of this. Is this considered newsworthy by any stretch of the imagination?

Dang, I thought that twitter was what a bird with a speech defect did.

Wow, I clicked (as fast as possible) all the way through to #3 Ellen DeGeneres, #2 Ashton Kutcher, #1 Brittany Spears.

Amazing, these people have SO MUCH to say that we all need to hear. Bleh. Confirms my gut feel, twitter is for twits.

If you would like to get this type of list without clicking through the slideshow above, there are several sites out there that provide the information. http://twitaholic.com/ is one of them.

I agree with a commenter below who said a more informative post would tell you who is WORTH following. Some of these "celeb" tweeters have over a million followers, but may not have posted in months or a year.

But the answer to the question of who is worth following kind of depends on what types of things interest you.

I really like Twitter, but I only follow about 300 or so people and I have about 250 or so people following me. Mostly I use it to stay in touch with the theatre community across the country. I am a theatre artist in Boston, but I can get information from Artistic Directors, critics and technicians from Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Austin, etc.

Then there are people who are just plain fun to follow, like some of the comedians on the list above or the person who tweets as Doctor Samuel Johnson: http://twitter.com/drsamueljohnson

Has anything changed in the past year or its twitter still a totally pointless exchange of nothing?

Irregardless, was great to see Rainn Wilson up there, he made the American office what it is.
And to me, that is the only TV show I have been able to tolerate in a long time.

You can get some decent stuff on twitter like notice of cheap plane tickets and when someone you follow has put up something useful on their website. If you can't imagine how twitter can be useful you might not ought to be using the series of tubes. Not everyone posts about going to the bathroom or seeing the sun go down.

The prez shouldn't feel bad about not using his Twitter account...I NEVER use mine...I don't
even know how to "tweet". And I hardly use my Facebook account either...I have no time for
them. I don't use my cell phone (not a iPhone or Blackberry just a basic cell phone) to text...
at all. I use, OMG, a phone attached to a LINE in my house to actually talk to another real human being, and send email on a computer attached to a modem to keep in touch!!!! You know, all that ancient, out of date, 20th century technology.
