Nordstrom Photoshop: Model Tao Okamoto's Waist Digitally Whittled Down? (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 06/25/2010 3:57 pm   Updated: 05/25/2011 4:55 pm

Update: Nordstrom has tweeted that it didn't slim down Okamoto's waist, providing before and after shots of the retouching.

What do you think?

Quick Poll

Did Nordstrom reduce the size of the model's waist?

No--I believe them.

Yes--Who are they trying to fool?

Original story:

Someone call the Photoshop Police! As Tavi, who is guest-blogging for Jezebel this week, points out, Nordstrom has digitally whittled down Tao Okamoto's waist in the image for Ralph Lauren's Black Label Mercerized Cotton Polo. But don't worry, the shirt is on sale for $89, which is 40% off. Exactly the same amount of torso Okamoto is missing.

She isn't any thinner than most models, even Victoria's Secret models, who people like to hold out as examples of "curvier" models. The only difference is that VS models have breast implants. They are still very thin! Check out some of the earlier pictures of one of VS's prominent models, Adrianna Lima before she got breast implants, if you can find any. She is as thin as this model. You all have been brainwashed by Hollywood, where the vast majority of actresses have breast implants, and/or have their breasts taped up and pushed up. Somehow being thin with big breasts is OK, even though big breasts generally don't come with thin bodies, b/c breasts are mostly fat. God forbid you show a thin woman with her body surgically unaltered. Read these posts. People are just downright nasty.

EVERY image for a catalog or magazine is Photoshopped. It's what art directors do for fun. The question is: how much?

That aside, this model appears narrower than a 10-year old girl. Why an agency would choose this look to sell clothing to adult women is even more questionable.

Dout it was touched up there, they pulled the n1p5 tho...

Generally, asian female models attempt to look like 10 year old boys, which is why I find them so grotesque...

Let's HOPE it was whittled down.

And you wonder why the article of clothing delivered to your door looks nothing like it did online.

I'll be withholding judgment until I see how Larry and Curly appear.

They may be telling the truth about trimming the waist, although her left elbow is lower than her waist, which seems odd. The distance between her waist and crotch also seems too long, and the upper torso too short. I think they've stretched the image with Photoshop to make her appear thinner, which is a common practice in fashion photography. Compare the proportions with http://frankiefranks.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/tokamotovoguemain1.jpg.

Almost all print models are 'shopped these days. So are every woman you see on the cover of women's magazines.

Wow! Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind! That model either cannot be human or is another Photoshop victim.

If you look at her right side, no fabric will ever lie that way, completely smooth and bumpless. She's thin of course, but this was done to make the fabric look better, more expensive, and utterly unnatural. You wonder why the clothes never look the same on you? It's not the anorexic model, but the retouching to make the piece look perfect, like it never will on a human.

Funny, according to Wikipedia's listing, she's a US Size 4, but her waist is only 23.5 in. Fascinating how that is possible. And if she's a size 4 then I must be a size 24!
