Feinstein: If Petraeus Wants Afghanistan Troop Drawdown Scrapped, 'Give It To Him, Absolutely'

David Petraeus

A senior Senate Democrat on foreign policy issues said on Sunday that the president's pledged July 2011 timeline for a troop drawdown in Afghanistan was malleable to the requests of military command.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Cali.), whose hawkish grounding has angered progressive in the past, likely facilitated that anger again, when she told "Fox News Sunday" that if General David Petraeus asked for more troops next summer, he should be granted them.

"I would say give it to him, absolutely," said the California Democrat. "Now, let's talk about the deadline. This is a transition point toward the beginning of a withdrawal or a drawdown as Petraeus said in his transcript before the Armed Services [Committee]. And I think he has flexibility realistically. Ten years is a long time to fight a war, particularly with what happened before the 10 years. And so we need to understand that [we have] to get the military trained, get the government online, secure and stabilize, and I think do away with the drugs to a great extent, because the drugs are now fueling the Taliban."

Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, has long sounded warnings about the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. But her comments on Sunday appear to be the most explicit endorsement of scrapping the July 2011 timeframe for a troop drawdown -- should circumstances demand it.

It's a position that will only fuel suspicion that Congress lacks the political will to actually stick to the timeline for withdrawal (by, say, using the power of the purse to affect it). Indeed, Feinstein seemed to fully cede legislative influence over the course of the war when she granted during the Fox News interview that the United States should "put all of our eggs in the Petraeus basket at this stage."

Dianne, I just wanted to let you know, I thought you were a better senator than that. You deeply disappoint me and millions of others when you say things like that. And it wasn't too smart.

Wondering what's percentage of the money from tax payers goes towards the actual fighting expenses and wha's percentage goes towards miscellaneous corruptions on the US side and the Afgan side ? We don't actually get enough bangs for our bucks. The is a monumental scam on the American people by the US government and the military industrial complex, in conspiracy with the Afgan governmental officials. It's just an extremely over priced war, reminiscent of our health care industrial complex..

Why wait? Let's just scrap the timeline right now, today, and start packing up to leave immediately. One more year or twenty will make zero difference. We want out, they want us out, and we can spend the money better at home on healthcare and education instead. Win/win!

New Rule: If you support the war in Afghanistan and Iraq (or any war) than you pay for it with your own taxes; YOU go to war or send your kids to fight.

Hey, I've got an idea. Since war is the only spending that Republicans will support, and in view of the fact that somehow Democrats, like Obama and Feistein also seem to be enamored with this lost cause, let's just reinstitute the draft and conscript a few million out of work Americans to go over there and "win" this thing. It'll only cost us another trillion dollars, but it'll put a serious dent in unemployment while actually mounting a force that would have a prayer of decisive action.

Seriously though, "if General David Petraeus asked for more troops next summer, he should be granted them?" More troops are always the answer for tactical victory. The question is, “what will we win?” There's no Nazi army to defeat, no Berlin to march into in victory. There's not even a government to return to power or an industrial complex to restore.

This war is a stupid waste of lives and resources. We can cut the budget by a factor of 10 and still pursue our only legitimate objective — to seek out and destroy Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. We need to retain our withdrawal date and ensure that Karzai and his government fully understand that we will be gone. It’s up to them to either take real control or surrender it to the Taliban. It’s not an American issue.

Wow. HA!! good one. I am also thinking that there must be some other strategy for guarding the loose nukes in Pakistan. Maybe Petraeus can help with a new idea, I hope.

What war of late made any sense? Someone is making big bucks off these 3 wars and that is all that counts. First we supported the Taliban, then we are fighting them - I say that is confusing to the people in Afghanistan. Why should they trust Americans? Petraeus will say what our politicians expect him to say. After all he is more like a politician than a warrior!

Sure Diane, we can trust Patraeus. Really? Iraq has been such a success and it only came at a cost of what (that's in addition to all the lives, (people of Iraq and our young men and women whose lives are destroyed because of the emotional scars or those who gave the full measure of sacrifice). Give him whatever he wants but know that middle Americans are the ones who will be paying for it...

Could we just stop feeding the war machine. Everyone knows there will be no military victory in Iraq, there is no government to hand things over to and Karzai is certainly not reliable, nor is there a chance of bringing all the tribes under one government.
10:09 AM on 06/28/2010
Let's see... Afghanistan and the economy are still the biggest problems. Hmmm... what could possibly be done to change that? Gee, maybe getting out of Afghanistan right now? While we're at it, how about withdrawing ALL of our military everywhere else in the world and stop playing world dominator? That could save a buck or two.

It disturbs me that the fate of a war hangs in the hand of a General rather than the decision of the President and Congress. We shouldn't leave this type of decision in the hands of the people in the field because, guess what? They will always vote to escalate war. That's what they do. It's what they are.
