Cell Phones College Students

Daily Nebraskan :

Over the last few years, the image of students talking, texting or e-mailing on their phones in between classes has become increasingly common on most college campuses.

And this trend doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

A new study performed at Ball State University found that 99.8 percent of college students now have some kind of cell phone, and that smart phones are accounting for more of their electronic communication and computing needs than ever before.

I once worked with a girl who attended Ball State. She always stated the painfully obvious, months after everyone else came to the conclusion.

Now I understand where she developed the habit.

When I was in college you couldn't have found 99.8% of the students having a pen or pencil.

What a colossal waste of time and energy. Anyone alive on any college or university campus could have saved the researcher the expense of determining that virtually 100% of the student body is wired. As I have reported several times in the college section of the Huffpost, classroom cell phone usage is epidemic. Some students, I truly believe, are cellular-addicted and cannot tolerate even one hour away from their precious text messages. This summer, in a freshman composition class, one of my students has worked her way down from an A to a B simply because she has not listened to instructions about assignments and submits defective work. She has, however, maintained her cellular umbilical cord with her contacts...

dear god, i hope you aren't a real professor. you are mistaking the laziness of one particular student for the productivity of many others.

even if cell phones are involved, any dedicated student can balance a work and social life with school. when you place the blame on cell phones (or any other distraction), you give reason to believe that your own subject material isn't the reason that students are not learning what they should be learning. adapt your topics to what interests modern individuals, and you will find that students are more receptive.

This is an amazing story! 0.2% of college students don't have a cell phone? Who the heck are these people and where have they been hiding?

Some people do not have mobile phones due to cost of whatever.

The penetration is going to be high though because people in university usually will forego a home phone and rely completely on the mobile phone. People who live at home might use a home phone as contact number.

A notable alumnus of Ball State is David Letterman.

That's a big reason polls are often wrong.
