Put the babe in your lap on top of ANY book. Intone guilessly and let the child watch the words as the pages turn. All sorts of strange, eclectic sounds and the pronunciation of seldom-heard words will cause the gray matter to form in curious curls.

Meta-biologist Gregory Bateson said his father used to read the Bible to the family during meals. He wanted them to be atheists, but he didn't want them to be "empty-headed atheists."

Dylan Thomas's father used to read him Shakespeare when he was a baby. You can hear the influence in his poetry. All sound and music.
