Naomi Campbell Bald? Supermodel Reveals Serious Hair Loss (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 06/29/2010 11:01 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 4:55 pm

Naomi Campbell inadvertently showed off a bald patch while she was on a fashion shoot for Dennis Basso in New York on Monday. There are newpictures of the supermodel's hair loss, thought to be "traction alopecia," a condition that stems from years of wearing tight braids and extensions. After watching Naomi's hair go from long to short to long again to slightly shorter since April, we're not surprised that something was going on under those alleged wigs...but we certainly didn't expect to see this. Take a look at her different coifs over the last two months and tell us what you think.

she probably deserves it!
being so mean to so many people in the past, particularly the poor people who works for her, this is probably payback - to lose what is her claim to fame and money

Hair loss due to traction alopocia is becoming more common due to stress from braiding, sewing, and gluing in extensions or pulling the hair too tight. It is very sad that Ms. Campbell is losing her hair due to this. However, she is very beautiful and recently embarked on path of self discovery so maybe this is another trial for her to further come into the person who she really is/desires to be. It would be wonderful for her to also model herself to speak out against applying stress to the hair, the importance of hair care, and self acceptance regardless of color, hair type, career, or other social pressures. The modeling industry can not give this loss back to her.

I'm not sure how the vote ended up with 62% not thinking she's bald, did everyone not see the link to TMZ that shows her alien-like bald head? The link is in the 2nd sentence of the story, it's pretty crazy...

The vote ended with 62% because most times braids, and weaves pull the hairline rather than the whole head...

We’ve probably not seen NC’s real hair in many years. For as long as I can remember, she’s always worn wigs, weaves and extensions. The picture of the balding patch shows a completely different texture of hair than that of all of her photos.

With regard to the many comments suggesting Beyonce take heed, people should know that these types of hair losses don’t only affect Black people and/or women. Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Michael Bolton, Tom Sizemore and numerous others have also reportedly endured similar consequences as a result of wearing extensions.

For real. They are hooked on the tumble weave. I know that when I was rocking extensions it was only for a short period but the braids were so damned tight that I could barely sleep at night the first week. Then when I'd had enough and couldn't take it anymore, I undid the braids and took out the tracks and found that i'd taken half my hair with it. before then i just used hair glue which was horrible also. Finally, i just accepted that I like my own hair and leave that crap alone.

Your refusal to accept the FACT about Black skin does not make it any less of a fact. It's a fact and a well known fact. Now I know your confidence has been boosted with the development and common usage of botox, collagen injections and other anti-aging skin treatmens and you now think you're in the position to successfully LIE about the truth (which is typical) sad and ugly., but typical. There are certain biological and scientific realities, the earth is NOT flat and Black skin doesn't age as quickly as White skin...accept it. It's not the end of the world and while you're at it grow up in general calling people names because you don't like the way they look is beyond juvenile.

very convincing! you make a lot of sense...LOL
By the way, YOU meant Naomi's confidence has been boosted with the development and common usage of botox, collagen injections and other anti-aging skin treatmens and she is now in the position to successfully LIE about the truth (which is typical) sad and ugly...I agree! ;)))) She is a pathological liar!

No, I actually was referring to you. Naomi, like most Black women I know, don't need it, especially at the youthful age of 40. You however, who I strongly suspect have pale.skin prone to aging seem envious of, and threatened by those who do not. Why else would you go on the attack with juvenile name calling? Why else would you risk looking like a dayum phool in trying to deny such an obvious undeniable fact. Black skin is less prone to wrinkling.than white skin..period. Even Stevie Wonder can see that. This is such an undeniable fact that you look almost in sain attempting to deny it. You can't possibly be that ignorant so I have to assume that you (now armed with botox etc) are onn a mission to create your own reality. You wouldnd't be the first, in fact it's very consistent with this country's tradition.

They are just trying to show the many weaves she has had in just over 2 mos. They were trying to show evidence that if you constantly add and remove weave pieces, it will do damage to your scalp. I have some damage due to wearing too tight ponytails at my hospital job. I have some breakage near front scalp from pulling hair back too tightly. so I have to be careful from now on. Basically they were saying for the health of her scalp, she needs to take a weave break and leave her poor scalp alone for a while. It is a fact that tight weaves, pony tails, braids, etc. will do major damage to the scalp if you dont give it time to recover in between.

Same with dying hair. It knocks lumps out of its condition, then breaks badly. I imagine Naomi's hair is much the same as every other model in a similar position. The damage their bodies take is colossal. The sensible ones make their money then get out with a rich hubby!

OMG I just saw it. Eventually you will lose your hair if aesthetics is more important than the health of your scalp. As a regular weave wearer over the years, I have never wanted weaves bad enough to damage my scalp. I've been into wigs on and off for over 10 years now anyway. No need to put my hair and scalp through it, spend that kinda money and time when a quick, temporary fix does the trick.

Naomi Campbell has such a beautiful face she could probably get away with going bald or wearing a close fade long enough for her natural hair to get a breather and maybe grow back.
It's a shame that she's holding onto those weaves like a stank security blanket.

Traction alopecia can be temporary but I saw the pictures of Naomi's hair loss, its probably permanent. The best solution for her is to wear lace wigs with a silk top. It'll look very natural and very common amongst women who suffer from hair loss who don't want to take off their hair every night.

The hair extensions she wears will just result in further hair loss. A silk top lace wig would be perfect. She should know better than to wear these tacky wigs.

I specialise in working with women who are suffering from hair loss. It affects lots of women.

Naomi's traction alopecia is quite pretty much permanent, its quite obvious from the sparce regrowth on her scalp. She just needs someone who can be frank with her about how best to address her hair loss.

I, too, have damaged my scalp wearing weaves over the years, perhaps irreparably. Would you please send me a link for how to consult with you about possible solutions? Would be great....

I remember going into a new job wearing wigs. Some of the women disliked me and one of the rumors they started was that I didn't have any hair, that was why I wore wigs. So I braided up my hair, then fluffed it out into a HUGE afro one day. My hair was very natural, and so long that at the top it wouldnt stand straight up, it fell over. You could see my scalp with very little effort, but if anyone asked, I let them look.
Next day, I was back to wearing wigs. My hair grows well when I wear wigs to work. I wash and groom it regularly, and it grows. The wigs are already bought and paid for and I dont have to spend money getting my hair done.

Looking back over the years, as a black woman who knows what I am looking at, I have to say that it has been at least twenty years (probably longer) since we have seen her real hair. I recall that It was Naomi who finally found a beautician so highly skilled that she could apply extensions that lay flat and close to the head with no evidence of seaming. That was back in the late eighties or early nineties. She's been doing hair tricks a long time, folks. I figure she will be doing them as long as she wants. And whether or not she is bald is just a moot point, and the people she works for do not demand authenticity, since they are all about artifice. So, HuffPost, get a grip and try to find something else to talk about.

Would hair transplants work? Or is the scalp so damaged that wouldn't be an option?

If she really is bald, she wouldn't have any donor hair to contribute.

@ mlk1000 : That was a little harsh. Whether or not you like her personality. she is a beautiful woman. I don't think she looks plastic at all. She's a Black woman . Bkack women don't tend to age the same way as White women do. Horse face! I don't thnk you even think thats true....

She's made millions from that "horse face". How about you? Is anybody paying you to use your face. You may not like her kind of beauty, but that doesn't make her any less beautiful. Sounds to me like you're holding her to that antiquated standard of beauty which implies that anything that isn't blond and blue-eyed can't possibly be beautiful. She's no cookie-cutter blond. She's got an exotic look that she's been paid millions for, and I'm betting that this is something you've never accomplished.

By the way, do you actually know her or are you basing your judgment of her character by what you read on TMZ? Sounds to me like you need a trip to the mirror to do some self reflection. You're suffering from a terrible case of sour grapes.

I think she's breathtaking. I've seen her model. She makes the clothes dance when she walks, and I envy her ability to wear such beautiful things and look so wonderful in them. That she looks so good at 40 renews my faith in my daily trips to the gym. A body like that is a lifetime achievement.

She can shave her head and wear a burlap sack and still be one of the most stunning women to have walked the catwalk. Think of her in Michael Jackson's "In the Closet" video. Wow. She's just beautiful.
