Surfing Mice In Australia (VIDEO)

A gang of surfing mice in Australia are giving Laird Hamilton a run for his money.

Shane Wilmott, a resident of the Gold Coast in Australia, has been building tiny replicas of real surf boards in order to teach his mice how to ride them. And, amazingly, it's working.

Indeed, mice are actually strong swimmers, according to Wilmott.

And though Wilmott is proud to report he hasn't lost any of his mates, "I made a promise to myself that if one of my mice gets hurt I will stop. I only do it because I feel they are safe. These guys aren't just my pets, they're my mates too so I care about them a lot."

Wilmott taught his first mice to surf 25 years ago when he was a teenager, and currently has four mice that are fully trained for ocean surfing.

These mice had to go through rigorous training sessions in which they started in the bath, then moved out to the pool to be towed by a remote controlled boat. Finally, when Wilmott decides they're ready, they are taken to the ocean to ride the waves and entertain the fellow beach goers.

Of course they're 'good.' They're hanging on for their lives.

If you play enough Beach Boys music any species within earshot will eventually have a go as surfin', even budgies. The boys are that good.

Video won't load for me, but the board is hardly a replica, way too much nose rocker.

When it comes down to either drowning or surfing, the mice choose to surf.

It's not learning to surf, it's learning not to drown!

Some people don't get out enough or have too much time on their hands...

The mice are going along with it until they can make their get away. The guy is not dealing with a full deck and they don't want to tick him off.

Isn't a news story about rodents surfing (or water skiing) one of the events in Harry Potter just before the Death Eaters cause all kinds of world catastrophes? I think this is a bad sign. . .

This guy has far too much time on his hands.

Although as long as the mice are hanging twenty, they're safe from my cat!
