Every year, there is a pre-approved list of tropical storm and hurricane names, and 2010 is no different.
The tradition of naming hurricanes is centuries old, particularly in the West Indies, where hurricanes were named after patron saints for the days they occurred.
Today the World Meteorological Center decides on a list of names each year, one for every letter of the alphabet except X, Y and Z.
The first Atlantic hurricane of the 2010 season has already formed, and it has been dubbed Hurricane Alex.
