Off The Beaten Track: Affordable Roadtrips For Independence Day Weekend

2.57 million SoCal residents are expected to travel this 4th of July weekend, up 19% from last year. Still, even though we're getting out there again, it doesn't mean we're ready to break the bank. We're more likely to be driving than flying, and we're more likely to go somewhere relatively local to keep costs down. The top five destinations for SoCal travelers this weekend are San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, the Central Coast, and the Grand Canyon - pretty obvious choices - so here are a few more ideas to get you off the beaten track.

Santa Ynez Valley

The idyllic cities of Los Olivos, Buellton, and Solvang provided the backdrop of the movie Sideways, and it's obvious why. Santa Ynez Wine Country may not be as well known as Napa, but small family-owned wineries with tasting rooms dot the 6-mile stretch of road through Santa Ynez, and communities that appreciate good wine also know good food. Don't miss the aebelskivers at Solvang, a historic Danish community. And for something new, try the LA Times reviewed Root-246 restaurant led by Chef Bradley Ogden.
