Afghan Th Death
Jacob Leicht

Marine Cpl. Jacob C. Leicht of Kerrville, Texas, the 1,000th American serviceman killed in Afghanistan, would have turned 25 this July 4.

Jacob's father, Craig Leicht, told HuffPost last week that the family hadn't made major plans for Independence Day. "Yeah, we had our moments of sorrow, but that's what life is about -- standing up for what you believe in," he said. "We're not really, I guess, a weeping and gnashing-of-teeth kind of family. We're rejoicing in who Jacob was and what he stood for."

Jacob Leicht died May 27 when he stepped on a landmine in Helmand province. It was his second tour in a war zone -- he'd returned to combat after he'd been badly injured in Iraq during 2007. The Associated Press reported that Leicht "launched a campaign for himself at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, writing letters and making phone calls about returning to combat."

The Kerrville Daily Times reported that "Leicht fought through 18 surgeries to recover from his injuries in 2007 just to rejoin his band of brothers fighting in Afghanistan. He could have taken a medical discharge and drawn disability payments for the rest of his life, but his character would not let him."

He'd been in Afghanistan less than a month when he died.

On Memorial Day, the people of Kerrville turned out to honor Jacob and show support for his family. "My heart goes out so much to this family and their loss of our American hero," said one woman interviewed by the the Daily Times, which produced a video of the day's events and also a video slideshow of the memorial service.

Memorial Day:

"As a Vietnam veteran from California, I never would have expected the outpouring of love and appreciation from the thousands that lined the streets, standing with hands over their hearts, reverently holding flags and saluting, many with tears running down their cheeks as our procession passed by," said Leicht's uncle, Joe Steinmeyer, in a letter to the Daily Times. "It was deeply moving to see that many people that truly 'get it' and who understand and appreciate the willingness of Jacob and others like him to make the ultimate contribution toward the price of our freedoms."

Jacob's father told HuffPost the media attention "was kind of odd at first," but "then we kind of realized it was an incredible story. We knew it all along, having lived through it with him." He said they received calls from senators and the governor.

"It's nice for our family in that it's been probably more publicized because [he was the 1,000th soldier to die in the war] and because it happened so close to Memorial Day," he said. "We don't feel the other 999 were any less of a sacrifice."

Of the mission in Afghanistan, Leicht said, "We believe strongly in it -- and he did as well, that there was a definite evil in the world that has to be stopped."

Leicht's younger son, Jesse, enlisted in the Marines nine days before his older brother was killed. He told the AP he hoped his older brother knew he'd signed up.

Why does Nancy Grace, host of an HLN show at 8:00 p.m. each night post numbers of the OUR Dead soldiers at the end of her show ( about 5 minutes to 9:00 ) and try to make out like she Cares ABOUT THEM In the first place the numbers are WRONG Yesterday she had 4416 ( which is the number that have died IN IRAQ, But she does not include the Number of ... See Morethose who died in Afghanistan ( 1166 ) here are the Official figures as OF JULY 15TH 2010 www.defense.gov/news/casualty.pdf ..............Either she or her research staff are just plain ignorant........ What she is doing is a slap in the face to every soldier who is fighting and dying In Afghanistan and thier families AND SHE IGNORES THE PROPOSED SOLUTION TO GET NASA and our military to assist police and find missing and abducted children WITHIN MINUTES using real time satellite photos of the crime scene....... Thanks for giving this war a human face through the brave men and women who die in combat. The families of the fallen have the prayers of the nation. We should fully understand that our freedom comes at a very high price for some so that we do not take liberty for granted.

This is so sad...sympathy to the family and friends of this young man and to all the others who have lost loved one's in these two on-going wars.

When you hear some of the people here in America and see
some of the culture here, I'm sure some of them wonder what
they are even fighting for.
Economy is in a mess.. The most things made in America
seem to be babies and criminals.

Jobs are going to other countries that we are making wealthy.
Many of the vets lucky enough to come home are coming home to no job...
At least we should give our Military contracts to America.
We need something to be proud of and it would be nice
to see "Made in America" on our Military supplies at least.

How heart wrenching it will be for the relatives of these soldiers when they come to find out that their loved ones didn't die for God and country or to ensure freedom at home or abroad, but only as part of a ritual killing spree. Your children have always been and will always be as expendable as a chess piece. The willingness to continue to acquiesce to these wars of insanity is beyond comprehension. When will we learn? I'm not sure what is more sad, the untimely and unnecessary death of these beautiful young people or the myopic naivete of the populace that allows it to continue.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't Independence Day the one on which we celebrate our independence from Great Britain in 1776? How did this morph into celebrating wars and our troops occupying foreign coutries and half a dozen other nonsensical things we commemorate on this date? Nothing like a little commercialism to show what we're really made of. I am truly tired of how exceptional Americans think we are. Ever hear of humility? It would serve us all much better, but I'm sure I'll never see it from the majority, not even the religious majority where I'd expect to see it first. Sad.

Notice the line I put in all caps

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
WHERE THERE'S NEVER A BOAST OR BRAG.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

I live in a tiny town in upstate NY. Two years ago, we lost a young man in Iraq...he was just 21. Just a kid, really.
The entire town was devastated--everyone knew this boy; everyone liked him.
Gone now, and for what?
Jacob is gone now, and thousands like him....for what?
Duped by the "freedom isn't free" marketing BS of the MIC.

Is any of this blood on Obama's hands? He COULD bring these boys home, since we're accomplishing nothing there.

He's just like Johnson. Failed social programs and a war he inherited but didn't have the guts to end. Too bad, eh?

I agree about the wars, but his social programs are not "failures". Without Republican obstructionism they would be much more successful than they are and will be if given half a chance.

Only one way, begin a gradual withdrawal (say 10,000 a month) until we are gone. Spend that money on creating JOBS! Infrastructure, green energy, health care providers and high speed rail for a start. And the education for all of those.

Again we bow for a moment of silence as we remember the brave men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, who with pride lay down their lives willingly to complete the mission set to their charge.

We remember the ultimate sacrifice and honor Marine Corporal Jacob C. Leicht who was born on Independence Day but fell shy of celebrating his 25th birthday and so we must do it for him.

To all my Peeps on HuffPo Happy Independence Day and let us take the time to honor our fallen soldiers with a moment of silent prayer and remember those who are in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places of war as well as their families.

Be safe and enjoy each moment, and by all means take time to smell the flowers and enjoy nature.

Be blessed.

Peace and Love.

Folks, this isn't Memorial Day, it's Independence Day. You allow yourselves to be led wherever the government and the media lead you. Get a grip.

Jaczar When is it inappropriate to remember our men and women who honor us with their service? We don't need Memorial Day to reach out to commemorate those who honor us with their service.

It is the height of insensitivity that scolds us who extend our love and support to those who are fighting for our freedom in foreign countries.

We got a grip and caution those who have lost their grip on human compassion to open their hearts and let others in.

Peace and Love.

In the US every holiday is now becoming "Veterans Day". The country is like a big 24x7 military recruiting operation. Nine years of losing the war in Afghanistan and America is still in denial about the failure of the military to accomplish its mission. The military bravely bankrupts the country carrying out its perpetual, hopeless mission.

The military is not failing to accomplish it's mission....it's mission is to make money for people like Cheney and their contracts like Haliburton...and they are doing that very well. They are the major reason we are there...the contractors making the big bucks are fighting to stay there and they have political support because of who they are....

i'm going to say it i know i'm going to get flake for this but someone's got to speak the the truth.

this 10 year old war in afghanistan is not successful and will never be successful

afghanistan = graveyard of nations.

these soldiers are not fighting for freedom or any other noble ideal of america. they are not defending america. they are fighting for the sake of fighting and keeping their own buddies alive.

for the politicians and military to twist this into something great and noble to a death that had no meaning is to BETRAY the truth and LIE that will continue to build on ammunition to fuel more war and escalation.

AMERICA NEEDS TO BE TOLD THE TRUTH THAT THESE WARS WERE STARTED ON FALSE PREMISE AND THAT THERE IS NO WAY OUT.

ANOTHER $30 BILLION OR $300 TRILLION WON'T WIN AFGHANISTAN.

THE SOONER AMERICA REALIZES THE TRUTH THE MORE SOLDIERS LIVES WILL BE SAVED FOR AN UNNECESSARY LIE OF A WAR.

END THIS ENDLESS WAR NOW!!!!!

I am in complete agreement with you while I mourn the loss of another misguided man in the prime of his life who will be here to see another birthday. Glorifying this or any other soldier for fighting for what he believed in. What exactly was that when it comes to what this country is about. We are wasting lives and billions of dollars while our country is in the toilet and the Afghan government is shipping planeloads of our tax dollars to Dubai or wherever they intend to live when we pull out, as we inevitably will. We have nothing to gain only a reputation for destroying a second country, killing thousands of innocent Afghans as well as Americans and digging a hole for future generations of Americans who cannot get jobs, cannot afford an education, have no health insurance. How much better off would we be if we all joined with the Veterans for Peace in crying out with a loud voice - END THIS WAR NOW.

"Misguided"? Do you personally know any United States Marines??
He WAS fighting for what HE BELIEVED in. There are still people who believe in something such as freedom and protecting others, and guess what? They protect your right to say it, as loud and as often as you want to.
