Obama Awards $2 Billion For Solar Power, Hails New Jobs

JULIE PACE   07/ 3/10 05:43 PM ET   AP

Obama Solar Power

WASHINGTON — The government is handing out nearly $2 billion for new solar plants that President Barack Obama says will create thousands of jobs and increase the use of renewable energy sources.

Obama announced the initiative in his weekly radio and online address Saturday, saying the money is part of his plan to bring new industries to the U.S.

"We're going to keep competing aggressively to make sure the jobs and industries of the future are taking root right here in America," Obama said.

The two companies that will receive the money from the president's $862 billion economic stimulus are Abengoa Solar, which will build one of the world's largest solar plants in Arizona, creating 1,600 construction jobs; and Abound Solar Manufacturing, which is building plants in Colorado and Indiana. The Obama administration says those projects will create more than 2,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent jobs.

Obama's announcement came a day after the Labor Department reported that employers slashed payrolls last month for the first time in six months, driven by the expected end of 225,000 temporary census jobs. Meanwhile, private-sector hiring rose by 83,000 workers.

The unemployment rate dropped to 9.5 percent.

Obama said that while it may take years to bring back all the jobs lost during the recession, the economy is moving in a positive direction. He placed some of the blame for the slow pace of recovery on Republicans, saying GOP lawmakers, "are playing the same old Washington games and using their power to hold this relief hostage."

Obama has said that to bring the nation's economy back from the brink of a depression, it was necessary to add to the country's debt in the short term.

Republicans have tried to capitalize on that growing sum. Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss said in the Republican's weekly address that the country's $13 trillion debt is a national security issue that will leave the U.S. vulnerable and force future generations to "pay higher taxes to foot the bill for Democrats' out-of-control spending."

What happened to us? Where are the entrepreneurs?

Has congress killed us by paying for research instead based on a CEO's idea he got in the toilet.

Where are the people that built prototypes. Just needed cash to put things into production.

They say talent goes where the money is? Does that mean the smartest of us develop only software for phones and technology  Read More...

GREAT !

I am sure many Republicans are happy also.

Palin say she can stand on the shores and see solar and if they attack us she will be prepared.

Bachman says this is a plot against our freedom and solars need passports to enter America.

This jobs are essential. A move like this helps people get and save money while it helps the environment and our scientists. A good use of public funds

Didn't Carter try something similar to this?
I believe he only lasted 1 term as Pres.

Yes, *and* it seems that history and current events have vindicated Mr. Carter.

Or am I addressing Tony Hayward?

Yes, lowering tax will always win. Doesn’t matter if it right or wrong. President Carter had some good idée’s that had made the USA the number one country today.

Two billion dollars for solar but trillions(by now) to oil. Maybe we could reverse this at some point?

+ AZ has:
1. Almost perfect weather for Solar Photovoltaic panels year round.
2. Lots of open flat land...
3. Good location to major energy grid and nearby population centers.

Was that the stimulus or NAFTA? Or was that just more of the GOP-championed "deregulation" that's been going on for over 30 years now?

Do tell.

This is very good news. I wish that all homes were required to have solar shingles now. Why not build homes with these rather than wood or clay shingles? It would provide energy for each home and, in some cases, put energy back into the grid for those people with older homes. The panels are getting cheaper and cheaper and if the housing industry used them on all new homes, they would get far cheaper. Time to start the green revolution!

Well, why would you put expensive solar shingles on a house that sits under shade trees? It would be a waster of resources and the environment. Or in a state where it's cloudy and rainy the bulk of the time? This is real life and there is NO one size fits all solution.

Also at this time they are not affordable. Retrofit? Why? The cost would be outrageous and the average home owner moves every 5 to 7 years at the outside so why would they invest a massive amount into solar panels that they will not see the payback on?

Again, real life, issues are complicated. In the end we may need some more breakthroughs before the technology is ready to provide each home with it's own energy source.

Even solar panels that sit in shade collect energy.

You are pretty ignorant.

SD,CA did the math and figured that by providing the up front costs and adding them to your mortgage, it would save air quality and be a win win for everyone!

Those grants are alive and well in San Diego and some other CA Cities!
Actually they are forgivable 10 year loans to be exact!

The govt should take every single drop of tax abatements ,tax subsidies, outright grants and various other financial benefits it gives to the oil and gas industry and slather the resulting billions on the solar power industry. Should have been done decades ago.

AND

No New Taxes!,... No New Taxes!,... No New Taxes!,... No New Taxes!,... No New Taxes!,...

AND assorted racial & social class warfare criticisms,...

That's all the Republicans have in their arsenal.

Just love the way they chose to ignore the defecits for decades while constantly lowering the tax rates for those well off,... and fighting wars off the books,... and subsidies to their cronies in the energy business,... and

$2 Billion is a drop in the bucket for what we need to be spending on alternative energy & manufacturing in the US,... but it is a start,... at last.

SPELLING SPELLING SPELLING

And why bring up the Republicans? They have pretty well destroyed America and created a society which keeps people in grinding poverty while boosting the incomes of the uber rich. Hopefully there will not be a Republican in the White House until the debt is paid off and the poor get to go to good schools. And 2 billion is nothing. Obama should have a trillion or so in solar and wind. Its the twenyy first century and America is stuck with fossil fuels killing it literally and economically. Take America back and kick out the corporations. No more lobbyists.

I think that one day very soon it will be impossible to build a house in the US without solar panels. And this would truly be our modern day Declaration of Independence. Independence from oil and from the mega utilities that control the grid.

As soon as I can possibly afford it I am putting a set up on the back roof of my 110 year old rowhouse. It will at least supplement the rest of our energy budget if not cutting it almost entirely during the Summer.

Who believes the nonsense in this article?!?!? We all agree that alternative sources of enrgy are a good thing but to even imply that it will be a viable solution to our unemployment problem is delusional ."The economy is moving in the right direction" is a fantasy, how convenient to leave out the fact that over 600,000+ people have stopped looking for work.

Slash the corporate tax rate by 2/3 to generate manufacturing and make us competitive with the rest of the world. Re-institute Glass Steagal instead of wasting time on a feckless "banking overhaul" and let investments banks be aggressive while safeguarding retail concerns. Auction off the 61% stake in GM and make that money available as low interest loans to small businesses. Force a balanced budget amendment for FY'11, and take half the remaining "stimulus" money and give it back to the general public in the form of rebate checks. Consumers and the private sector will drive the recovery, government "public works" projects will only mask the problem...
