The first couple held the White House's Fourth of July barbecue for military members and families and government employees and families on the South Lawn on Sunday. President Obama wore a short-sleeved blue polo, but it was Hostess with the Mostess Michelle who arrived showing off her Independence Day spirit, opting for a festive red, white and blue top, paired with white pants and silver flats. Take a look at pics from the event and scroll down for video and a text recap.

Obama celebrates July 4th at White House barbecue By NATASHA T. METZLER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Calling the Declaration of Independence more than words on an aging parchment, President Barack Obama marked the Fourth of July on Sunday by urging Americans to live the principles that founded the nation as well as celebrate them.

"This is the day when we celebrate the very essence of America and the spirit that has defined us as a people and as a nation for more than two centuries," Obama told guests at a South Lawn barbecue honoring service members and their families.

"We celebrate the principles that are timeless, tenets first declared by men of property and wealth but which gave rise to what Lincoln called a new birth of freedom in America -- civil rights and voting rights, workers' rights and women's rights, and the rights of every American," he said. "And on this day that is uniquely American we are reminded that our Declaration, our example, made us a beacon to the world."

Obama noted that people across the country were firing up their barbecues and enjoying the company of family and friends.

"Now, of course I'll admit that the backyard's a little bigger here, but it's the same spirit," Obama said to laughter. "Michelle and I couldn't imagine a better way to celebrate America's birthday than with America's extraordinary men and women in uniform and their families."

With first lady Michelle Obama at his side, Obama spoke from a White House balcony overlooking the South Lawn. The estimated 1,200 guests included active-duty members of the military and their families, wounded troops, people with family members overseas, and families of troops who have died.

"Today we also celebrate all of you, the men and women of our armed forces, who defend this country we love," he told the enthusiastic group.

Sections of the crowd screamed and cheered in turn as Obama individually thanked each service branch, naming an exemplary member of each who stood on the balcony with the president and first lady.

Obama, who wore a blue short-sleeve shirt, and his wife spent about 15 minutes shaking hands and exchanging greetings with eager members of the crowd, who pressed in to shake hands and take photos. Many of the children on hand had red, white and blue face paint and sparkly American flags decorating their skin.

Guests ate traditional July Fourth fare -- hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled chicken with potato salad and corn on the cob. Plenty of red, white and blue decorated the South Lawn, from colorful tablecloths to paper lanterns hanging from trees.

Singer Brandi Carlile, rock band The Killers, comedian Cedric the Entertainer and the U.S. Marine Band performed for the gathering.

To logic-a-go-go, a bun is "lazy?" Have to disagree. I think she looks elegant, lovely, chic, and considering the hot, humid weather in D.C. this time of year, COOL! I'm not black. But, I do have very curly hair. Sometimes in the summer, my hair just has to be pulled back because the humidity will make it go WILD no matter how often I flatiron it. And, this being a barbeque, our FLOTUS should be able to enjoy herself without worrying about her hair every 15 minutes. I also wish I had the cheekbones to carry off this look as well as Mrs. Obama does. Keep it real, FLOTUS! Your chignon is elegant, economical, and weather-appropriate.

And, these pictures are also fantastic!

I know that Michelle Obama is self-reliant and independent, and a no-frills, pragmatic person. Many of us love that about her. When she takes time to look good, she looks fabulous. But please, would her stylist let her know that this slicked back bun stuck on the back of her head is just not good enough for the wife of the president? It always looks like it took 10 seconds maximum to fix her hair this way. A very lazy look for the First Lady. She is the most high-profile woman in the world. Madam First Lady, please keep your hair stylist(s) at the ready, or have them give you a great casual style without resorting to the local "Handy-Mart run" look. It just doesn't work for you.

she's black and has to use hair relaxers to get the looks you like.... unless you're ok with an afro. when you see her hair pulled back it means it's a rest day for it. if she relaxes it everyday it'll fall out. or maybe she should wear a wig to appease white folks who don't understand black hair. or a hat/cap? she's just keeping it real. as a black woman this is one of our normal hairstyles. do malia's dread locks bother you too? should she relax 24/7 two? is sasha's pulled back hair ok or should she wear a wig?

I think FLOTUS looks great! This is the right hair style for her on a hot day, at a bbq. Not a hair is out of place. BTW, 'Fashionista', I'd like to get a look at your fabulous hair do.

I may not agree with him on about 50% of his policies, but I cannot dislike him. I support the financial reform and the student loan reform. Thus from a conservative lib. Drill baby drill type.

To all the crusty sock puppets, 'baggers, sore losers, and truly deranged. I hope your 4th lived up to your bigoted expectations. To all the others, I say God bless the America envisioned by our founders.

Man, I'd love to play a gig like that!

I think this administration has the best interests of the people more foremost in their minds since, well I don't know when, but I know it's a long time.

I love this couple - and I'm SO proud to be an American who voted for President Obama. It's so nice to see the genuine affection between them. I never saw any emotion between W and Laura, or Geo. Sr. and Barbara. None. There was a little between Bill & Hill, but it was just for the cameras. This is real.

LOVE!

Wow in pic nr. 6 you see such a warm embrace between the FLOTUS and a visitor to the WH.
The First Lady is smiling and has her hand on his head and he has his arm around her upper back.

Nice picture. I wonder if they know one another?
