Alvin Greene Details Emerge, But Much Remains Murky About South Carolina Senate Candidate

MANNING, S.C. — Alvin Greene earned the nickname "turtle" in high school – a quiet, withdrawn boy who was smart when he applied himself but rarely took a chance and tried to put himself in comfortable situations.

Nearly four weeks ago, the 32-year-old unemployed military veteran turned South Carolina's political scene upside down when he won the Democratic nomination for a U.S. Senate seat. And unlike that high school student, he's taking a big chance: running against powerhouse Republican Sen. Jim DeMint.

He is remembered as painfully shy by those who knew him in high school, where Greene was the only black person on the tennis team. His mother died of cancer when he was a boy; a brother died of cystic fibrosis. The few people who know him say the man with a political science degree from the University of South Carolina is smarter than his national image suggests.

But much remains murky about him. He spends his days in the home he shares with his ailing father on the two-lane backroad to South Carolina's beaches, about four miles outside Manning.

He says he campaigned across the state but doesn't remember where. He has no staff. He touts his service in the Army and Air Force, but won't specify what he did or why he was "involuntarily" discharged. He says he decided two years ago to run for Senate but appears to have done little except pay the $10,440 filing fee with a hand-written, hand-delivered check to party headquarters.

At the small businesses surrounding his hometown about 50 miles southeast of Columbia, plenty of people have heard of Greene. But from the post office to the small diners to the shop that sells CDs and other merchandise, few know much about him.

A trip to his home doesn't provide much more illumination. The days after Greene won the Democratic primary by a 30,000-vote landslide, he welcomed reporters into his home. He spoke to The Associated Press for the better part of an hour. A Washington Post reporter wrote he spent more than three hours with Greene, his father and brother.

But Greene didn't say much, repeating talking points and deflecting any questions about his past, like his "involuntary" discharge from the military after 13 years of service or who was backing his campaign.

After dozens of interviews, the candidate has begun to shun reporters, wearily asking what the story is going to be about and sometimes refusing to talk.

Two weeks ago, Greene asked the same AP reporter he'd welcomed into his home to leave, saying he was "a busy man" and repeating "Go! Go! Go! Go!" while avoiding eye contact. A phone call to arrange an interview later that day was met with a gruff request to return a week later at 1:30. When the appointment arrived, Greene wasn't there. Greene answered another request for a long interview Monday by telling the reporter to call back in a couple of weeks.

Greene's older brother said a national television crew recently spent a couple of days in Manning doing a story. They wanted to get video of Greene at church on a Sunday, basking in the attention from his congregation. Greene told them he needed to stay home and answer the phone.

"I've told him he needs to get people to do that kind of stuff. But he's hardheaded and doesn't listen," said James Jr., 12 years older than his brother.

James Jr. beams with pride when he talks about how his little brother shook up politics, comparing Greene winning the primary to the U.S. moon landing.

"Your dreams can come true," James Jr. said.

Publicly, though, Greene doesn't seem to be enjoying the harsh spotlight.

The day after his victory, the AP reported he had been arrested in November and charged with a felony for allegedly showing pornography to a teenage college student. Greene has refused to comment.

U.S. Senate, state and federal officials have called for investigations into his finances after he initially was granted a public defender to fight the charge and still had money to pay the filing fee about four months later. Greene said he saved his military pay for two years.

Officials say Greene entered the South Carolina Air National Guard in 1995 when he was 17. He briefly served in Texas in 1996, then served the next years as an intelligence specialist. He was honorably discharged in 2002 and was free to enlist in another military branch.

Greene's records are blank until 2006, when he re-enlisted for nearly a year with the South Carolina Army National Guard. Again, Greene was discharged and allowed to enter another branch. The next year he signed up with the U.S. Army, serving more than two years before his discharge last August.

Everywhere else, Greene faded to the background.

Tennis coach Kay Young said she remembers just about every one of her players over her nearly two decades leading the team. But she barely recalls Greene, who she said was a smart boy who earned the "turtle" nickname because he was so introverted.

"I do remember he wasn't outgoing and he was picked on unmercifully," said Young, who had no idea her former player was running until she saw her ballot on primary day.

When Greene was 10, his mom died of cancer. He suffered another blow about a decade later when his brother Timmy died from cystic fibrosis while Greene was doing ROTC training in Texas, James Jr. said.

One of the few places in Manning where Greene is often seen is Spencer and Tom's Barber Shop downtown. He and his father come in about once a month, said his barber, Spencer Tindal.

Political opinions and other small talk bounce off the walls of the tiny shop, but Tindal said Greene doesn't talk much. He did tape a green campaign flyer to the wall – one of the few tangible signs of Greene's candidacy. It stayed up only until he won the primary.

There is one thing that perks Greene up – taking on DeMint. Greene said he decided South Carolina deserved a better senator about two years ago when he was stationed in South Korea.

"I want a debate. A September debate," Greene said the day after his win, a smile twinkling on the edge of his lips. "A good September debate, just compare and contrast the issues."

To those who keep repeating that Greene is a GOP plant; the majority of his support came from African-American areas that also voted for Obama. So unless this is a much wider conspiracy involving Obama also being a GOP plant, I think we can throw this conspiracy away.

I think Greene was very smart to avoid the media until he won the primary. And I don't think he's the 'simpleton' some have made him out to be. The fact that he wants a September debate with DeMint says a LOT. I wonder if DeMint will oblige! That's one debate I'd watch!
I have the feeling this man is full of surprises - but I think it's in a good way! Somehow, I think he's just someone who is as fed up with things as the rest of us are - but had the courage and fortitude to do something about it.

There is another story on HuffPost today about Mr. Greene's interview with The Guardian newspaper (English) . Here is the link directly to that article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/06/alvin-greene-south-carolina-senate

For those of you who think Mr. Greene is up to the job as a senator, do read this brief interview. You will find in there the first sign of a policy - that of a Jobs Policy, in which he suggests people could be put to work by making toys of himself (yes, Alvin Greene) - action figures of various types. You must read it verbatim to really appreciate it.

This is a sad situation for South Carolina, again.

It's not just a sad situation for SC, it Is sad for all of us. He is not an alderman only voting for local issues in Charleston. If sworn in, he votes for things that affect ALL of us. We have seen how vital every single vote is and peoples lives are literally at stake with some of the decisions that the senate will be called upon to make. Some on this site want to act as if this were a tv show or some movie comedy for their entertainment, the consequences of the decisions he would be responsible for are not jokes and to the people directly affected, they are deadly serious.

There's something extremely odd about this story. At least we know now that he has a degree in political science. I can't wait for the details as we get closer to September.

Mr. Greene would most likely have made a better chief executive than our current one, to bad he didn't emerge earlier to the political scene. Could someone make the argument that he would have done worse than the depression were being brought into now. If we talk to our neighbors as I have they say they can't believe the thing's going on in the federal gov. How far into a depression do we have to go until the rest of the people wake up and realize this is not working. Alvin Greene would be hard pressed to do as much destruction to our economy in such a short time.

The "Depression" was brought about by Bush and your Republicans are filibustering every piece of legislation that the Democrats are trying to pass in order to clean up Bush's mess. The Stock Market is NOT at 6000, like it was when Bush was in office, and the jobs in this country are holding relatively stable. We are not hemorrhaging jobs like when your man Bush left office.

This is not an episode of "The Mentalist". People ask for proof of guilt and that is what invesigations are designed to do. I said earlier that it's not like a video tape of Greene and Demint discussing a plot will surface and break the case wide open like on TV. All we are saying is that there are enough questions to justify an investigation.

See, there is proof right there that he actually is a Democrat---he wants to debate the issues. Only Democrats believe that voters are swayed by your position on the issues.

hgovernick commented yesterday that the Republicans aren't going after Greene because he doesn't pose a threat to them. I'd go further. They consider him an asset. They want him to win. It's true that no one can substantiate claims that they bankrolled his $10,400 filing fee. Republicans have shown many times that they know how to play dirty, and often get away with it. If Greene got that money from the Republicans, I'm sure they were careful about covering their tracks. I think the fact that the Republicans aren't tearing into Greene speaks volumes. I'm remembering what Saxby Chambliss did to Max Cleland. I'm watching how Republicans obstruct anything Obama, and Democrats, try to do to repair the mess they've made of the country. But they're standing aside for Greene, the Democrat. They must feel they'd have a lot to gain if Greene were elected.

"Republicans" in South Carolina are too busy putting together "RINO Hunts" to go after Lindsey Graham because he said some very truthful things about the Tea Party. They'll get around to Greene once they are sure that he's the real candidate, and he's not going to get switched out.

They don't. He is there beecause he presents the least threat. Rawls may not have won, but he was polling close to the margin of error. He had closed the gap to 9 points, they don't fear Greene at all. This investigation will be done before these "debates" happen and the truth will come out. At some point Greene will drop out or face legal prosecution.

Whatever you might say about Alvin Greene, it's obvious to everyone but the average American that no amount of simple errors or misunderstandings could possibly account for the election of someone so hilariously unelectable, especially by an astonishing 60-40 ratio. So it is that, instead of articles which should be honing in on the blatant corruption, rigged machines and power-brokers that brought this travesty about, you get the cowardly, impotent media once more doing its best to obscure and conceal the REAL story and focus its simpering attentions instead on the trivial matter of this pathetic dupe's character, hoping you simply won't notice the prominent strings leading upwards from his flailing limbs to the vague and shadowy figure overhead.

Mr. Greene is far more intelligent than corporate citizens who support offshore deepwater drilling, oppose extending unemployment benefits and healthcare, and vote for the MIC while sending our men and women off to an un-winable war in Afghanistan.
09:18 AM on 07/07/2010
According to what little I could drum up from Wiki on what Mr. Greene's actual positions are, he supposedly calls himself a "moderate" democrat and is actually FOR, not against, offshore drilling since it means jobs for the region and falls into line with his stunningly less-than-original slogan: "Let's get South Carolina back to work". But all of that is entirely beside the point. This complete enigma won a Senate primary by a whopping margin over a well-known and highly-respected four-time congressman having never made any campaign appearances, having never given any interviews, having never met with any democratic leaders, and in short, having never really RUN. The REAL news that should be getting far more attention is that Jim Clyburn, the House Majority Whip and first black to be elected to Congress from South Carolina since Reconstruction, has stated publicly HE thinks Greene's a plant, not only because South Carolina history is LOADED with similarly cutthroat shenanigans, but this particular incident bears an all-too-striking resemblance to one that took place in 1990 when a political consultant hired a poor black fisherman to run in a Republican congressional primary in order to cause controversy and boost white turnout at the polls. Does not such a scenario seem far more likely an explanation of Mr.Greene's sudden acquisition of $10,0000 and his otherwise inexplicable triumph than that thousands of people just decided to vote for a man they had never remotely heard of?

People said they voted for him because they liked his name more than the second name on the ballot. His was first on the ballot. It also sounds like the singer Al Green. I think people were confused.

Point taken, but however misguided the incumbent is that Greene is trying to replace, DeMint is quick witted enough to defend his absurd worldview and policy ideas. Greene seems like he would struggle with solving the mysteries in Blue's Clues, let alone the nation's problems.
