I totally agree. "The Passage" is a non-novel. I don't see any main characters--just these names of characters with no unique characteristics to define and separate them. Whether it's Maus or Peter or Theo speaking--they all sound the same. They're like the same people mouthing lines. It just seems like a book with no unity. I read the whole thing and I am totally baffled by the hype and praise that this book is getting. I suspect that it is the subject a huge hype campaign that is all about earning back the publisher's payout rather than a genuine appreciation of the owrk.

THE PASSAGE is the most overhyped book since THE HISTORIAN.

I always look forward to his picks in EW. While his list is mostly thrillers, I was surprised to see Joshua Ferris's UNNAMED -- a literary fiction book that disappointed many critics. ORDINARY THUNDERSTORMS, though, is one that I will be checking out based on his recommendation.

A predictably pedestrian list.

This is like asking for great jazz album recommendations from Justin Bieber.

Thomas Perry's The Butcher's Boy is still an absolute joy. If you don't know his work start with this one; it's still in print.
