'Daily Show' Reunion: Colbert Welcomes Carell AND Stewart (VIDEO)

Colbert Carell

The moment last night's "Colbert Report" began, you knew some gold was a-comin'. The show opened with guest Steve Carell, who was clearly not content with just plugging his movie. Nope, he took over the entire intro, dubbing it the "Carell Corral."

But the real magic happened later as Colbert's attempt to interview his former "Daily Show" colleague devolved into a revival of their classic segment "Even Stevphen." After breaking out the bit's original title sequence, the two proceeded fire insults at will, knocking the other down a peg with each jab.

Some highlights:

Carell: "You are just jealous because you're stuck here in the same building, just a half an hour later. What's the matter, doesn't Jon Stewart's teet come with an extension cord?"

After Carell's boasted that he had ten chairs, Colbert responded: "Ooh, ten chairs. You could seat everyone who saw 'Dan In Real Life.'"

The one thing they could agree on? That they're lucky to no longer work for Jon Stewart. Said a tearful Colbert: "That asshole really held us back while he was launching our careers."

But of course the segment wouldn't be complete with an appearance by Stewart himself, looking over them with pride.

To think: Saturday Night Live does one show a week, vacations half the year... and they can't mine a nugget of comedy gold equal to this 7 minutes.

The old Even Stephen segments were the best...I remember a Islam vs. Christianity that was pure gold, both of them were so committed to the argument it was hilarious.

Favorite skit was when they made the Daily Show office into a haunted ride for a story Carrell was doing on Halloween and he was most frightened by the tableau of Colbert as the host.

I can see it coming.... Eventually (God forbid), both Colbert and Jon Stewart will end their shows, and I'll have to pony up a year's salary to buy the complete blu-ray DVD sets.

Firstly, they can never, ever retire. Secondly, I would TOTALLY buy a 30 or whatever disc set of the Daily Show and Colbert Report. I would totally live on Ramen for a year so I could do that.

There was a time when Stewart was too sick to host the Daily Show and Colbert took his place. After Colbert's "sick" episode on Monday, I thought Carell's introduction on Wednesday's episode of the Colbert Report meant the same thing. Leave it to this creative team to come up with something even funnier and more surreal. The back-stabbing "compliments" in the Even Steven segment were some of the best ever written. Keep up the good work, boys.

I remember Colbert hosting the Daily Show but I think I am thinking of when the Stewarts were welcoming their first little one. Corddry did it the for the second little one.

I was SO excited at the beginning of the episode. I love Colbert, but I was disappointed that the Carell Corral was only a "bad dream." Would have loved to see Carell host the entire episode.
