Massive Taiwan Parliament Brawl Breaks Out (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/08/10 03:09 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:00 PM ET

A brawl broke out Thursday in the Taiwanese Parliament between the pro-China ruling party and the anti-China Democratic Progressive Party over an economic agreement signed with China.
The agreement includes cutting tariffs on about 800 Chinese goods headed to Taiwan.

The brawl initially started with the Parliament members just throwing paper and trash bins, but eventually turned into an all-out fight, ultimately sending two politicians to the hospital. Other minor injuries were reported and the parliament speaker called a recess until Friday.

I'd love to see the House and Senate duke it out. You know-- really just take out all that built up angst.

This would never happen in the U.S. Private interests dont pay congressmen enough to actually throw fists. Well, after that supreme court overturning.....

My friends from Taiwan laugh about the macho posturing behind these fights in parliament. You have to remember Taiwan's history to understand why this is part of the culture. The DPP (Green) represents the Taiwanese who do not consider themselves mainland Chinese. They want to declare Taiwan an independent state, free from China. The KMT (Red) consider themselves Chinese, and support the eventual reunification of Taiwan and the mainland. Trade agreements like this with the mainland government are seen as baby steps towards re-unification. That's why the emotions run high and these fights break out. The DPP feels deals like this with the mainland weakens Taiwan's economy by hurting Taiwan's small business community, and therefore threatens to endanges Taiwan's strength & sovereignty. So while it may seem funny and childish to have fights in parliament, for the DPP it's about Taiwan's continued independence and very survival. I have friends who are on both sides of the independence debate, and for both sides the fight is about Taiwan's future, it's national identity and its sovereignty as a nation.

Again anyone else notice the vast difference in cultures? We so kid ourselves in to thinking we are farther along as a species than we really are. If their parliament acts this way how do you have trade agreements with them? Really, if this is the cornerstone of the civility which democracy is supposed to be, then how do we do business in this country at all?

Yes, and what I saw appeared to more in the nature of tantrums and throwing paper than a real get-down brawl.

Why can't we ever have this in the US? I'd love to watch Barney Frank punching Eric Cantor's lights out while Nancy Pelosi goes medieval on Michelle Bachmann!

I expect that this will soon be replayed here in the United States when the Tea Party sends a few dozen nuts to Congress in the fall. Probably led by the Championship Wrestling idiot who is running.

The tea-baggers have gotten guns in bars, guns in churches, and I'll bet five bucks that they try to use this footage to get the right to carry guns in Congress. I'm just saying.

Do they serve liquor there?

Who knows? But they sure do in the British Parliament as per article today regarding drunken antics of a member, last name Reckless and others, participating in a Budget vote that went late into the night. Hilarious, and something that is preferable to the to the behind the scenes corruption that goes on in the US house and Senate and passes for democracy.
