Russia Spies' Kids: Some May Stay, Others To Go

Russia Spy Kids

NEW YORK — Their cover blown, 10 Russian spies have given up their lives in the U.S. and headed home, but in at least one case their children probably won't follow.

A lawyer for Vicky Pelaez said Thursday that the teenage son she had with fellow Russian agent Mikhail Vasenkov during the decades they spent living in New York will most likely remain in the U.S., as will her 38-year-old son from a prior marriage.

"He's 17 years of age. He'll probably stay with his brother," attorney John Rodriguez said.

Arrangements were being made to relocate other children of the Russian spies, who on Thursday admitted infiltrating the U.S. under assumed names to gather information for Moscow.

Hours after pleading guilty, all 10 members of the spy ring, including eight who are parents and have children in the U.S., were deported to Moscow. Just how soon their children might join them is unclear.

One other convicted couple, Mikhail Kutsik and Natalia Pereverzeva, had been making arrangements even before the plea deal to send their two young children home to Russia.

Prosecutors said in court papers last week that the pair, who had been living in Seattle and Arlington, Va., under the aliases Michael Zottoli and Patricia Mills, had asked family friends to get in touch with relatives and arrange for them to take custody of the kids, ages 1 and 3.

It wasn't immediately clear what type of travel arrangements were being made for the four other children involved in the case.

Vladimir and Lydia Guryev, who had been living in Montclair, N.J., under the names Richard and Cynthia Murphy, have two daughters, ages 7 and 11. Both attended a public elementary school and are believed to have lived their entire lives in the U.S. Officials have declined to comment on their whereabouts.

Andrey Bezrukov and Elena Vavilova, who lived in Cambridge, Mass., under the aliases Donald Heathfield and Tracey Foley, have two sons – a 20-year-old student at George Washington University and a 16-year-old who attended a private high school in Boston.

A move for the two children might not necessarily be disruptive. They already have spent time living in France and speak several languages.

A senior U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the deal said the kids will be permitted to leave the U.S. at any time, as long as the departure complies with the wishes of the parents and with any applicable requirements of U.S. law.

The sons of Pelaez and Vasenkov, who had gone for decades by the name Juan Lazaro, were in court to watch them plead guilty Thursday.

Juan Lazaro Jr., 17, is a gifted pianist who lived his whole life in the U.S., although he has spent considerable time in Peru, where his mother was born. Pelaez's other son, Waldo Mariscal, is an architect.

Neither commented as they left the courthouse.

They had both been living with Pelaez and Vasenkov in Yonkers, just north of New York City, but that home is to be seized by U.S. authorities because it was bought for the couple by Russia's intelligence service.

It was unclear whether the two knew Vasenkov's real name. Vasenkov had been romantically involved with Pelaez for 30 years. The two met in Peru, where she worked as a television journalist before moving to the U.S. and taking a job in New York writing for El Diario La Prensa, a Spanish-language newspaper.

Pelaez's lawyer, Rodriguez, said that after being deported to Russia she intends to return to Peru, where the family has a ranch.

Presumably, either of her sons could follow her there, Rodriguez said, although he added that Russian officials had offered the family rent-free housing in Russia, a $2,000-per-month stipend and visas that would allow them to come and go from the country as they please.

A bunch were sent back already.

It just makes sense to keep the kids with the parents, anyway.

Is the GOBP planning to kidnap those kids before they are returned to Russia, a la the GOBP's attempted kidnapping of Elian Gonzalez?

Or don't Republicans mind American-born kids being brought up under the ideology of Vladimir of Putin, because he passed muster with GW?

How could they object to American-born children of Russian illegal aliens being sent home when that is what they have proposed for the children of Mexican illegal aliens?

Seems to me there are really only 2 options to how to handle the children (certainly, the ones who are US citizens):

1) Let them go with their parents to Russia, or wherever their parents end up.
2) Terminate parental rights and put the kids into the foster care system in the US.

The US doesn't seem inclined to make the determination that the spies were unfit parents, their crimes notwithstanding. So #1 seems like the only real option.

How many of these children were concieved simply to enhance these spies cover? Talk about your heavy baggage growing up.

These children were used from day 1. Parents are supposed to love and nurture their children. Who are these people?

They're spies. My next comment was edited out. Something about the role of women in espionage, historically, and how the US wasn't too too much different.

How were they used? Their parents were in the US and did what people tend to do.

Let me explain it to you: When a man loves a woman, he puts a seed in a special baby growing area the mommy has. Mommy gets a big tummy. Then daddy goes out in the garden and and finds a baby the stock dropped off.

David, do you think they should have a trial first??? How could a 7 year old be guilty of treason and be stripped of their American citizenship and deported, when they didn't even know of their parents' crime?? Should they be tattooed before deportation, so they can't return as adults to the land of their BIRTH?? Hope you aren't a parent, since you believe children are guilty of the sins of their fathers.

They probably entitled to stay in the US. However, that would almost certainly mean the foster care system since, for most, their entire family will likely never be allowed back into the US. That is certainly an option, but one I somehow doubt their parents would take.
12:25 PM on 07/09/2010
Ha, I get it.

Oh wait...maybe not. Are you saying this procedure is just as archaic as the now defunct USSR?
11:52 AM on 07/09/2010
Life in Russia is worse than prison. At least with prison, one has hope for better days. These children, who only speak English, will be miserable in Russia. Google Russian women for a glimpse of the millions so desperate to escape Pootie's paradise that they are willing to marry strangers. How unspeakably selfish of the "parents"! How callous of Russia to use children as tools!

My cousin went back to Russia and brought his teenage daughter (by force) with him. She's miserable. The toddlers will be ok, it's the teenage sons and the 2 girls I'm worried about.
04:36 PM on 07/09/2010
The toddlers will learn Russian, but they won't be any more OK than the millions of Russians desperately trying to emigrate. The older children, who well know what they have been forced to relinquish, are doomed. Thanks, Pootie.

Apple, Teenagers are supposed to be miserable, wherever they happen to live. Very few realize that parents do the best they can in decisions affecting them. The teenage sons and the girls can return to the US when they are 18 by applying to the American Embassy as American citizens. I'm sure their parents would aid in that decision.

Well I say let the kids stay but make them live in Alaska. That way, they can get up every morning and wave to their parents in Russia.

Off to Siberia!! Let them be sentenced to serve in the gulag with their parents!! Oh, wait, Julia, these are American children whom you want to sentence to live with whom (?) as guardians in Alaska, rather than people they know as their guardians??? After their trial and conviction that is, huh? For what crime?? Glad you aren't a judge in family court.

They come back as illegal immigrants and get unemployment insurance since they lost their jobs or welfare and food stamps if not, education and free lunches for their kids, free medical care for the family and I’m sure they’ll figure out lots more.

Americans can return as LEGAL immigrants, and with their parents' backgrounds, I believe they'll have a better education here than most kids, so they'll get the professional jobs with employer paid medical care, Pell grants, etc. You are talking about the children, right, since the Russians will be under tight control as FAILED spies, and won't be able to leave Russia again.

After the Rosenbergs were executed for being spies, no relative came forward to adopt them and they became orphans until they were adopted. These children's parents get to live which is far better then the fate of past spies.
They did this to their children. Blame them.
10:56 AM on 07/09/2010
Sadly, like most adults, they probably told themselves they were doing it FOR their children.

Many of the refugees or H-1B's to whom I teach English say they would have done anything to get to this country. They didn't realize how easy it was to overstay their visas here, but that they would never take their American children with them to China if they got caught and would be deported; they have contingentcy plans with friends for guardianship if they were caught. Like the mother of Elian Gonzalez, they'd give their life for their child's better future.

A minor detail, but one that is important, is that the Rosenbergs were executed for treason not for being spies. Only one of these ten was a U.S. citizen.

I guess it is pretty easy to live in this county illegally, and for a long time I might add. Not all illegals are from south of the border. Before we start acting like Nazi Germany and demanding papers, maybe we should have t he ability to actually determine who/whom is a legal resident. In this day and age with fast computers this should not be a problem, why not pictures on SS card, and a bar code or something? This should have been done years ago if they (the government , both parties actually wanted to. )
12:12 PM on 07/09/2010
In Germany, American soldiers were killed off-duty for their ID cards, by German terrorists. I think this was in the 70's or 80's. An ID card can make you a target.

Woody,
Pictures can be changed by anyone with tecnical ability; many older people (like me) don't look anything like their original picture on their driver's license taken when they were teen-agers, and, again, a bar code can be reproduced by any computer . . . or changed, and many individuals who look alike can use the same ID and bar code, but not collect benefits, since that requires an original birth certificate or naturalization papers. Problem is there are millions who don't work or are legal residents or tourists/students on visas who are NOT required to have US identification. What would you do with all those diplomats in New York City? Treaties with many Native American Nations, such as the Navajo, would also prohibit this carding. In order to obtain Food Stamps or Medicaid in many counties in the US, you must produce an original birth certificate, or legal resident immigration documents, but are also required to have your forefinger print taken, and renewed semi-annually. The government can't determine the whereabouts of 12,000 visa overstayers, known to be in this country still, so how are you going to fingerprint multi-millions.
