Sharron Angle Calls BP's Victims' Compensation Program A 'Slush Fund' Before Walking Back Comments (AUDIO)

WASHINGTON - Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle twice referred to BP's $20 billion victims' compensation program as "a slush fund" and accused Democrats of using the spewing oil well as an excuse to pass energy legislation.

Angle told a Las Vegas radio station on Wednesday that President Barack Obama and the Democrats were taking political advantage of the April 20 explosion on a Gulf of Mexico oil rig to push for a cap-and-trade energy bill that has stalled in Congress. She also said the disaster that sent gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico occurred because BP "cut corners" and seemed to suggest the Environmental Protection Agency is to blame.

Appearing on KXNT, Angle agreed with a caller who said Obama strong-armed BP executives to set up the fund after the April rig explosion.

"Government shouldn't be doing that to a private company and I think you named it clearly, it's a slush fund," Angle said.

Angle attempted to walk back the comments in a statement on Thursday:

"Having had some time to think about it, the caller and I shouldn't have used the term slush fund; that was incorrect.

"My position is that the creation of this fund to compensate victims was an important first step -- BP caused this disaster and they should pay for it. But there are multiple parties at fault here and there should be a thorough investigation. We need to look into the actions, or inactions, of the Administration and why the regulatory agency in charge of oversight was asleep at the wheel while BP was cutting corners. Every party involved should be held fully accountable."

Obama met with BP executives at the White House last month and emerged from the meeting with a $20 billion commitment from the company to pay fishermen whose businesses were affected and to clean up the Gulf.

BP publicly backed the plan.

"From the outset, we have said that we fully accepted our obligations as a responsible party. This agreement reaffirms our commitment to do the right thing," BP chief executive officer Tony Hayward said when announcing the plan.

Angle also said the entire industry shouldn't have to pay for the spill. Only BP is funding the victims' fund.

"Everyone in the petroleum industry shouldn't be penalized for one bad person's actions. It would be like throwing us all in prison because one person committed murder. And that's exactly what's going on here," she said. "It's an overreaction by government for not the right reasons. They're actually using this crisis ... to get in cap and trade and every fine and penalty and slush fund, like you said."

Angle, a former state lawmaker, seemed to suggest the oil industry was regulated by the EPA. Offshore drilling, however, was overseen by the Minerals Management Service, a part of the Interior Department.

"The problem with even the EPA is that it's all about money. It's a taxing, fining agency. What we really needed was a management agency," said Angle, who is challenging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The Plum Line's Greg Sargent first reported Angle's BP comments.

All members of the so called "TEA PARTY" are Domestic Political Terrorists. Some of whom were and probably still Friends of Bin Laden Whom, with their help, did the Physical Damage to our Country on 9/11. And now, the Domestic Terrorists Members of the so called Tea Party are doing the Verbal Psychological and Political Damage to Americans. By the way, the TEA stands for: (Terrorist Evolution at Large). Whose main Goal is to Destroy the Basic Life of all Ordinary Americans by trying to Eliminate the Middle Class to create only two Classes: Either you are Rich or Poor. That 's one of the reasons they reward those good /well paying American Companies to move their Jobs Elsewhere without thinking about their own Government's lost of Desperately Needed Tax revenues. They are so wicked/Evil, they forgot that unlike other Countries in the world that have plenty of liquid Black Gold beneath their feet and other Natural Resourses, We Americans, are Business People. We Depend Heavily on Marketing and on Supply and Demand. They even have the nerves to be talking about UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS? After they themselves have Created the Crisis.
The TEA PARTY is against all Decent American Families. They are Racists/Traitors Against the Flourishing of America. That is the motive of all Terrorists and we must Defeat them.

BP ‘cuts payments to 40,000′ over incomplete claims forms

BP plans to cut payments to some 40,000 oil-spill claimants, potentially making life more difficult for individuals and businesses affected by the Gulf oil spill, a Louisiana official has said.

The Associated Press reports that Louisiana's secretary for children and family services, Kristy Nichols, found "a significant cut in daily payments" during a recent review of claims against BP, which appears to be related to incomplete forms.

In a letter to Ken Feinberg, the federal administrator of the oil spill claims process, Nichols wrote that it was "rash" of BP to cut payments to 40,000 of the 99,000 claims filed so far.

This latest gaffe would gladly have been been paid for by The Committee to re-elect Harry Reid.

So she thinks government shouldn't take actions that affect private companies AND that the EPA needs to manage more. OK, which is it?

Sharron Angle is primitive. She is a disgrace to women and this country. A case could be made that she may be a product of incest or inbreeding somewhere along the genetic tree,....or
perhaps just a freak of nature, genetic drift? Her mind is incapable of rational reasoning. She can only vomit radom thoughts from a rabid mind, cultivated in some yesteryear time and place.

She's a lot like Sarah Palin. They both seem incapable of coherent thought.

You have been Fav'd and Fan'd... Emma, I feel most women in this country think more in line with you... (Thank God) Thank you for taking a stand for freedom and speaking out for what's right. If Sharon Engle or Sarah Pailin or anyone even remotely similar in thought or message, male or female, (Rand Paul comes to mind) ever get elected to office... Heaven help us..

There certainly is a problem with the fund that Angle is talking about - it isn't in one lump sum and it ISN'T LARGE ENOUGH. Estimates of damage to the environment are now a TRILLION DOLLARS, so $20 billion in installments isn't enough.

Seizing the U.S. assets of the company would be a good start. Bankrupt the company? Why not?

Exactly right Madison... Why not??? This company has been sited for numerous violations on nature and humanity since they started. They could care less for anything but increasing profits. The shortcuts and down right greed of BP, and actually all companies, can no longer be tolerated. I say that any company that lies, cheats and literally rips-off the consumer with all the hidden fees and basically committing down right robbery... Take out a few of the larger offenders (seeing as they all do this) and watch the change in attitude.. BP should be taken over until all claims are paid then dismantled and sold off.. The management and owners BP should be banned from ever owning or operating anything that involves oil ever again... Why not... If anyone of you reading these posts think you wouldn't be in jail for the rest of your life for doing even a fraction of what these crooks have done.. think again... so I agree with you... WHY NOT!!!!!!!

Welcome to Eco Disaster USA

The images of Leaking Oil animal and marine death have only started to surface, just like the oil itself!

BP is trying it's hardest to limit access so that they can "make a deal" before the USA finds out exactly JUST HOW BIG THE PROBLEM IS.

THIS OIL PROBLEM WILL BE AROUND FOR A DECADE AT LEAST...

If I'm correct then $20B will be a drop in the bucket.... and will be referred to like buying Manhattan Island for strings of beads...

PLEASE ! ..... Where, and how the GOP comes up with these people really baffles the mind !

We all thought that they could never out-top themselves with Sarah Palin. But Michelle Bachman, Rand Paul and now this woman: Sharon Angle is showing they can out run her in a NY minute with their WILD N' CRAZY thoughts and statements ! I just pray that there is enough intelligent minded voters in each of their states, to prevail and not put these people into public office to represent them in any way at all. Which would affect America, ie (all of us). Because they would then suddenly have a right to vote on nation-wide issues, impacting our country ! ...... And then its GOD HELP US ALL !

There is a problem with the 20 Billion dollar fund for victims of BP's AND the government's negligence. The problem is that the fund is not collateralized. Yes the money goes into escrow. But the money is being paid into the fund in increments over four or five years. What happens if next year BP declares bankruptcy? It is my understanding that because the money is not collateralized, the fund for the victims would be in line with the rest of the creditors. Why wasn't and why can't they collateralize this fund?.

By the way, isn't it interesting that the Republicans (GOBP) who complain about law suits, criticize the President who has figured out a way for "victims" to be paid in the world of the "here and now" instead of having to go to court which could take years for them to recover their losses.

Harry Reid, old school but respected and has power, and makes an effort do some good.

Sharon Angle, clueless and not worthy of respect,no power,no hope ,"its not my job to create jobs"

Oh yeah, she is such a good candidate!!

The president did the most responsible and intelligent thing that a leader could have been done. Kudos to him for thinking of and implementing it. There is now money (BP's money, rather than tax dollars) set aside for the victims, and those victims will not have to forfeit legal recourse, either. That's the worst possible combination in the eyes of many of these conservatives who detest 1) justice for the poor (although they wholeheartedly embrace justice for the wealthy), and 2) corporate accountability.

I had to laugh when she called BP a private company.

A Senator whould know that an agreement between parties does not constitute a "slush fund"
