Sharron Angle's Advice For Rape Victims Considering Abortion: Turn Lemons Into Lemonade

Sharron Angle

Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle has moderated a host of policy positions in her transition from a primary candidate to general election contender battling Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. One thing she has not backed away from has been her insistence that abortion should be outlawed universally, even in cases of rape and incest.

In a radio interview Angle did in late June, the Tea Party favorite re-affirmed her pro-life sensibilities (rigid, as they are, even within Republican circles), when she insisted that a young girl raped by her father should know that "two wrongs don't make a right." Much good can come from a horrific situation like that, Angle added. Lemons can be made into lemonade.

Stock: Let me bring up one other topic that I rarely talk about here, because it's one of those topics that's a lose-lose, but we've got to talk about it because it was brought up in your TV interview and that has to do with the issue of abortion, and whether or not abortion should be available in the case of rape or incest. The question to you at the time by the interviewer was that do you want the government to go and tell a 13 year-old child who has been raped by her father that she has to have that baby. And of course you responded 'I didn't say that I always say that I value life.' Where do you stand on the issue of abortion, a consensual abortion, from a person who is raped or is pregnant as a result of incest?

Angle: Well right now our law permits that. My own personal feelings and that is always what I express, my personal feeling is that we need to err on the side of life. There is a plan and a purpose, a value to every life no matter what it's location, age, gender or disability. So whenever we talk about government and government's role, government's role is to protect life and that's what our Founding Father said, that we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Stock: What do you say then to a young girl, I am going to place it as he said it, when a young girl is raped by her father, let's say, and she is pregnant. How do you explain this to her in terms of wanting her to go through the process of having the baby?

Angle: I think that two wrongs don't make a right. And I have been in the situation of counseling young girls, not 13 but 15, who have had very at risk, difficult pregnancies. And my counsel was to look for some alternatives, which they did. And they found that they had made what was really a lemon situation into lemonade. Well one girl in particular moved in with the adoptive parents of her child, and they both were adopted. Both of them grew up, one graduated from high school, the other had parents that loved her and she also graduated from high school. And I'll tell you the little girl who was born from that very poor situation came to me when she was 13 and said 'I know what you did thank you for saving my life.' So it is meaningful to me to err on the side of life.

The interview, which took place on the conservative Alan Stock Show, was captured and sent to the Huffington Post by a source in Nevada. It is noteworthy primarily to the extent that it shows how doctrinaire Angle's views on abortion really are. The Nevada Republican earlier discussed her beliefs on the topic during an interview with the Bill Manders in which she called pregnancy in cases of rape and incest, "God's plan."

Since then, she's embraced the absolutist label she's been handed on abortion policy, refusing to back down from her statement to Manders during subsequent interviews and, clearly, expanding on it during her sit down with Alan Stock.

UPDATE: Angle's campaign released an abortion-related statement of Thursday afternoon:

It's easy to use rare situations such as the tragedies of rape and incest to skew the debate about the value of human life.

At a time when the Federal Government is already burning through our tax dollars, the Obama Administration and Harry Reid are using federal funds to pay for abortions via the abolition of the Mexico City Policy and the passage of Obamacare.

If abortion advocates really believed in choice as they claim, they would be just as eager to present women in these tragic situations with choices they can actually live with for years to come. That was the point I was making.

Sharron Angle is a true Republican. She is not only immoral but she is also deprived of Common sense. I wonder if she would have felt the same way had she, her daughter (s) or any of her family members been subjected to Rape or any other Unfortunate Circumstances. Those Republican Elements are completely ignorant of the meaning of certain words such as " Kindness, caring, Compassion and Human Dignity". They are some of the most Selfish and Self-Centered people I' ve ever seen. They don't even care about their own Family Members/Relatives whom I am sure, are physically exposed daily to the various elements in question to which they are so vehemently against. I hope and pray that they care to read the Biblical history about the Poor Leper man named" Lazar and the Rich man" before they exit the Earth. Because you see, there is no such thing as "PURGATORY". It does not exist. You cannot confess your Sins to any Sinner but to God Himself. Stop fooling yourselves. God is the Only Way. Do the right thing, Love EVERYBODY.

I think that unless Republican Senate Candidate Angle has ever been in a situation of a rape victim that just discovered that she was carrying her rapist's child that perhaps she should not speak intelligently until she had. I however can speak intelligently on the subject.
I placed the child that I was forced to conceive for adoption, however, I understand the impulse that you feel by being constantly reminded as long as that child grows inside of you what happened to you. I know that when you bear the child of the man who ripped from you your youth and innocence that you tend to hate yourself even more.
Perhaps the Senate Candidate should pull her head out of her political career long enough to see what she is suggesting and think about the consequences to the mother and that innocent child. Telling an innocent child that she should make lemonade after being brutally raped and having her innocence ripped from her in not only in poor taste, but morally wrong. Telling a child that did not make the choice to get pregnant that she has to deal with the consequences is morally apprehensible. I do not believe in abortion, particularly as a form of birth control, but you are not speaking of a girl who made her bed and therefore should lie in it. You are speaking to child who never had a choice to be in that bed. I wonder Senate Candidate, what would you do?

Crazy Sharron Angle crossed the border a long time ago. Angle's shady associations with an extremist religious party and her ties to Scientology are well known. Flip flopping Sharron seems to be confused about what Social Security is. Sharron Angle has stated that as senator it wouldn't be her job to bring new jobs to Nevada. Angle has said she wouldn't have supported the big casino employers. Sharron Angle has on multiple occasions voted for pay raises for herself not the actions of a fiscal conservative. Sharron Angle is just another old recycled borrow and spend politician.

But yet, Angle turns down any legislation to help single mothers, or those who have children at young ages. Her last vote CUT funding for them. What a hypocrite.

Oh, God! This is a very scary dilemma situation… if we decide to choose one, one must be in problem! If we don’t allow the 13 years old girl to have an abortion, how her life would be…! But if an abortion happens, the innocent potential person will be ruin! This is not the fault of the girl, or the fetus… If the girl think she is too young and she is not ready for that..... she should have the right over her body to have an abortion. However, it would be great if the girl can carry the child till the end of the term and then give the babe into adopted condition. Because many women have regretted after the abortion and more seriously, many have died from abortion so far.

And what, to hell with the fact the child is a product of being raped by her own father?
11:48 PM on 07/14/2010
Having a child while under the age of fifteen also puts the young mother at risk for many complications; during the pregnancy and later in life and can also put her life in danger, as well as the unborn. Plus, adoption is not easy to do. It is not easy to place your infant in someone's arms and say, 'Find a home for them.. I cannot do it.'

What I'd like to know in this link is why this wasn;t highlighted:

"approximately 70 percent of all women believe abortion is immoral, even though many also feel it should be a legal choice for others."

Lets repeat that "even though many also feel it should be a legal choice for others."

We're talking about a less than 1% of people that have aborition that are rape victims, and EVEN thoise rape victims that feel that abortion is immoral feel other women should have the choice....

Why? Because Pro-Choice is not Pro-Abortion. Pro-choice is pro choice. You get raped, you choose to have the baby, good for you! Thats your choice.

This isn't a defense. This simply shows exactly how extreme an anti-choice stance this woman has.

How come whenever this situation is put to strictly pro-life politicians they tend to point out that it’s very rare for this to happen, yet almost every single one of them has a story of someone whose mother was raped and chose not to have an abortion?

That argument has never really made sense to me anyway. Imagine if someone was preaching against premarital sex and someone else said, “If my parents hadn’t had sex before marriage, I would never have been born.” Would that make them change their minds on the subject? If not, why would they expect someone to become pro-life after being told, “If my mother had had an abortion after being raped, I would never have been born”?

This is an excellent way to make lemons into lemonaid. All we need is for the churches and religious organizations, who so fervently believe that a fetus is a person, to step up to the plate and provide full support by paying all of the expenses of caring for and raising the child. Surely this is what Jesus would want them to do.

Now, I'm going to hold my breath while I wait for my religious brethren to open their purses.
08:33 AM on 07/11/2010
I am going to guess from your comment that you don't get to church much. There are many people in my church who would gladly open their home to an unwed mother and who would gladly adopt her child if she was unable or unwilling to raise it herself. There are thousands of couples in this country who desperately want to adopt a baby. You see their heart wrenching letters in the newspapers all the time.

A life is a life regardless of how it was conceived. If God permits a child to be conceived then He has a reason for it. Who are we to say that he is wrong. All of these babies that have been aborted over the years were to have had a purpose in this world. However, because their mother chose to abort them we will never know what they were to achieve. Maybe one was to find a cure for cancer or some other grave illness. May one was to bring peace to the world. We will never know.

free will. if you believe in god you must believe that he has given free will.

it's easy to say that every child aborted was meant for good, but to use your logic, might that same fetus have grown up to do evil?
07:07 AM on 07/12/2010
If dad is a rap ist there's a better chance that child will be a criminal than finding a cure for cancer. The argument about all the missing babies due to a woman terminating a pregnancy doesn't address the fact that there are later planned babies that wouldn't be here if the earlier termination hadn't occurred. The best scenerio for a stable society is when a couple carefully chooses each other, has kids with the intention of raising the kids together.

Question: How do these extremists even become considered for an elective post? Is this country truly that backward?

Sadly it"s true. While most countries try to move forward the people of this nation regress. Extremely stupid people are the majority in the U.S.A. They also have more children who are born stupid because their parent's are idiot's. Smarter people tend to have less children and there's less of them having kids. So in reality, 3 out of every 4 children born really have no chance at being smart. Throw in very extreme religion beliefs and the fact that their parents blame all their own failures on other people or other races and we are becoming a nation of nutcases. Nothing we can do unless we stop dumb a##es from breeding.
