David Johnston, Canada's New Governor-General, Stars In Rap Video (VIDEO)

WATCH: Canada's New Governor-General Stars In Rap Video

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed David Johnston, president and vice chancellor of the University of Waterloo, as the country's next governor-general Thursday morning, saying the noted academic represents "the best of Canada."

What Harper likely didn't know is that among his many academic achievements, Johnston, 69, also has a less-heralded role: music video star.

Indeed, the governor-general designate made an appearance in a 2008 video by Baby Buddha, a Waterloo engineering student-turned-rapper. The song, called "Streets of Waterloo," is a hip-hop version of the university's unofficial cheer, learned during orientation week.

Though rhyming skills aren't known to be among the qualifications to succeed in Canadian politics, Johnston is not the first in his field to have dabbled in rap. Last year, current governor general Michaelle Jean, for whom Johnston will take over Oct. 1, loaned her skills to a music video project with inner city youths in Edmonton.
