Berlin Fashion Week Heavy On The Masks (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 07/12/10 08:51 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:00 PM ET

Call it the Lady Gaga Effect, or chalk it up to fall-winter's face-freezing weather, but masks are most certainly in style for next season as shown on several Berlin Fashion Week runways. Feathered, sparkly or reminiscent of our childhood Halloween costumes, we're not sure that we're going to co-sign this trend. Take a look and tell us which ones are the most preposterous and which look sort of posh.

NOT ENOUGH COVERAGE.

I think it is very provocative at a time when covering one's face is becoming illegal in a lot of countries, and questionable in most. I love it as a provocation, and it seems to be working in these comments.

Those look great for doing your everyday chores, like going to the bank, the liquor store. You know, I bet those would be a hit at parent-teacher conferences, too!

Masks are a great idea. They hide the models' shame of having to be seen in some horrendous "fashion."

I wonder if Muslim women wore this down European streets instead of burqas would they be considered socially acceptable by the elite?

Hideous, not at all mysterious and sensual. Someone is afraid of the power of women. In a free society that does not require a woman's face to be covered, why should we flirt with these so called "masks"?

Is the power of women defined by the features of their face? In a "free society" should it not be someones character that defines who they are to their peers?
07:56 AM on 07/13/2010
Part of someone's character is the body language they portray to others. Hiding under a burlap sack doesn't do much to instil confidence in those who can't see the facial expressions behind the "mask". Covering women up from head to toe is archaic and clearly a way for some religions, controlled by men, to also control what they consider to be their possessions, their women. Defending such a legacy is barbaric.

I guess if an adult is going to a masquerade ball the masks are O.K. Otherwise I see no need for an adult to be wearing a Halloween mask.

This is not fashion. It's a Halloween costume fetish practiced year round.
