Even at his wedding, it seems Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony can't escape rumors about his career plans.
Anthony, who was married to long-time girlfriend LaLa Vasquez on Sunday in New York, has been the subject of rumors regarding a potential trade to the New York Knicks.
On Sunday, all-star New Orleans point guard Chris Paul fed the rumor-mill during his wedding toast, alluding to a potential union in New York of Paul, Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, who signed with the Knicks last week.
From the New York Post:
According to a person who spoke with wedding attendee Amar'e Stoudemire, Paul made the reference during a speech of a potential union of himself, Stoudemire and Anthony, saying, "We'll form our own Big 3," Paul allegedly said.
Attendee Spike Lee nearly passed out at the suggestion.
The Knicks may not have to wait until 2012. The Knicks have an alternate plan as they stockpile a lot of tradeable assets.
Since LeBron James--who was also present at the wedding--and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami, buzz around the league has speculated that other superstars will now look to form similar alliances in order to compete with the Heat.
Paul, who has also been the subject of trade rumors, has made it clear that he wants to play for a winning team.
Anthony's contract expires at the end of the 2010-2011 season, but the Nuggets have already offered their star forward a 3-year, $65 million extension. Anthony is thought to be leaning toward signing the extension, which will give him more money than he's likely to receive if he signed a contract after a new collective bargaining agreement is in place after next season.
Reports, however, indicate that Anthony wants to see the Nuggets shore up their roster before he commits to the team for the long-term. If the Nuggets do not think they can get Anthony to sign a long-term deal, many have speculated that they would trade the all-star forward in order to ensure they get something in return for his departure. The Nuggets have flatly denied that they have any intention of trading Anthony.
