Stuart Rothenberg: Is Jim DeMint Obama's Ace In The Hole?

Demint Obama

Roll Call:

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, who once proclaimed that he'd rather have "30 Republicans in the Senate who believe in principles of freedom than 60 who don't believe in anything," continues to endorse Senate candidates and give leaders in his own party migraine headaches.

No fan of Jim DeMint here, but isn't he going to be running against Alvin Greene, a Democrat with no political experience and who is rumored to be a Republican plant who got elected due to South Carolina's open primary laws? I know we're on a roll here with our DeMint disparagement, which I'm enjoying, but what's the Democrats' strategy for getting Greene seen as a viable candidate and getting him elected  Read More...

I wouldn't exactly call DeMint, an "Ace in the hole", more likely, acehole.
02:43 PM on 07/13/2010
I predict that DeMint will be quite surprised with the outcome of the election in November. Between Alvin Greene and Tom Clements he has more of a fight than he may suspect.

Let the Republicans take the house! It will be a heyday pay back time. the Tea partier candidates will have to prove they can change things there by 2012, an so do the Republicans. It ought to be real interesting don't u think. Do u think the Dem's could do as many Fillibusters as the GOP have done, an just say NO at every turn? Ought to get pretty interesting if they do take the house! This I got to see, as it goes down, an the follow up for the next couple of years as they have no agenda or idea's.

I agree. I think the best thing that can happen to the Democrats is for the Republicans to win back some seats. If they tke control for two years, Obama can blame them for things not done. Genious

How about what's best for the country rather than what's best for one party or the other. I, for one, am thoroughly disgusted with Repubs for their complete lack of meaningful input into governing by dragging their knuckles and saying No to everything. I am disgusted by Dems who moderate their votes by whatever it is supposed to take to garner some "bipartisan" support instead of voting for the issues they campaigned on.

As seen by some of the comments on this thread, the desire for retribution by dem supporters is overwhelming the fact that should they actually get aggressive and run on their records and run against the failed record of the previous administration, they could actually add to their totals in the congress. Instead, many look ahead to obstructing repubs. Listen to Sherrod Brown or Alan Grayson as they talk about what is necessary for Dems in the fall elections. Listen, and pay attention. But don't throw in the towel and then emulate what the repubs. Don't you realize how serious the problems we face as a country are? Then don't copy the behavior of losers.

Goal for the congress--term limits. Combined with barring former congressmembers and their key staff from lobbying the congress, we could revive our government and get off the fast track to becoming a 3rd world country.

wow . physically speaking , this guy feels his job is so secured that he may take a vecation during the last 15 days prior to election . he is not even campaigning for his seat . Hope alvin greene teach him a lesson . by the way is there a different alvin greene hidding behind the dumb one we saw on tv ? i really hope so .
01:28 PM on 07/13/2010
You obviously don't know much about Alvin Green. He is up on a felony charge committed in November and he still lives in the basement of his fathers house. You saw the real Alvin on TV, living proof that many people vote party line and don't even look at the canidates qualifications!

In South Caolina, Republicans can vote in the Democratic primary and vice versa. Greene may have been voted in by Republicans.
02:40 PM on 07/13/2010
Here's a tidbit you yourself may not know. The felony case against Alvin Greene has been indefinitely postponed by the SC court. And yes, he does live with his ailing elderly father, but that is a check mark on the plus side of his character for me. I value family commitment.

Go DeMented, keep up the good work.....for the Democrats. 2010 we may lose seats in both Senate and House, but if the repubes perform like expected (hellno-or ssdd) we should be good for 2012 dontcha think?

No spin, just a guess, why are you so scared, is it because all the repube candidates are running on the "I'm kkkrazziers than the other guy" platform?
01:37 PM on 07/13/2010
We will lose some of course but we will hold both houses. As I've said before, your side has the momentum now, but our side will start playing closer attention to what is really at stake if the rethugs take back control. We still have time. If the elections were held today, you would blow past us.

If Democrats lose the House and/or the Senate, they'll blame Obama. He'll be challenged from the progressive wing of the party and face a Lyndon B. Johnson 1968 type of revolt. Russ Feingold will more than likely be the one to challenge him for the nomination (another Gene McCarthy?)

A good chance of the GOP winning again too.

Their god...Ronald Reagan....wouldn't even be up to today's Republican standards, yet they all bask in his glory.

No wonder...Reagan started this decline during his administration.

Actually, yes. By getting tax cuts for the rich cut in half, he inadvertantly cut the Federal Income, then decided to spend like a drunken sailor. Deregulation, firing all the Air Traffic Controllers and his spending, started this roller coaster ride so many call the Great Reagan Years.

I don't get the perceived big benefit that Obama's team is claiming here. Crazy, nut job republakins who are running in overly conservative districs will likely win, and those who are running in swing districts "may still" win. If the Independant voters aren't idealogues, then what is to stop them from voting to "throw the bums out". In fact, this climate of uncertainty seems to make them more likely to vote that way. They aren't idealogues! That means they don't have any real loyalty to the Democrats either.
12:24 PM on 07/13/2010
Because electing these people is not only throwing the bums out, but throwing the nuts in. I am a registered independent, and I never vote for extreme loony people.

Where do the republicans come up with these people. Forgetting about their politics, the likes of DeMint, McConnell, Boehner, Cantor, Sessions, McCain, turn my stomach. There is something creepy about all of them. Then there are their female candidates - fairly pretty and very empty.

I can't believe any Americans would want to chose any of these people for anything.
