Oil Spill: Baby Animals Hit The Hardest (PHOTOS)

AP/Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/12/10 09:46 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:00 PM ET

FORT JACKSON, La. (AP) -- The smallest victims are the biggest challenge for crews rescuing birds fouled with oil from the Gulf of Mexico spill.

There's no way to know how many chicks have been killed by the oil, or starved because their parents were rescued or died struggling in a slick.

"There are plenty of oiled babies out there," said Rebecca Dmytryk of the International Bird Rescue Research Center, one of the groups working to clean oiled animals.

The lucky ones end up in a cleaning center at Fort Jackson, a pre-Civil War historic site on the Mississippi River delta south of New Orleans.

Pelican chicks often come in cold because oil has matted down the fluffy down that's meant to keep them warm. They must be warmed quickly just to survive long enough to be cleaned. And the youngest must be taught to eat.

"They only know their parents regurgitating food into their mouths. They don't know how to pick stuff up," said Dmytryk, whose organization is working with Tri-State Bird Rescue, a company hired by BP to coordinate animal rescue and cleaning in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

That means tube feeding three times a day. Others, a bit older and accustomed to taking fish from a parent's throat, must be hand-fed until they can eat fish from a bowl.

Adults can be checked a few times a day, but babies needed two staffers' full-time attention to be sure they are eating and are warm.

Many adults and juvenile pelicans get coated with heavy oil diving for fish. That doesn't happen with the chicks, though they may wade into oily puddles or get smeared by oil from their parents' feathers.

In general, rescuers don't go into nesting colonies, said Mike Carloss, a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist. He said most rescued chicks were near shorelines or were on nests so low that oil washed onto them.

Lightly oiled chicks will lose the oil when they shed their down feathers, he said. "We've seen a lot of those birds in those stages make it. A lot of them are fledging now. It gives you hope that is the right thing to do."

Nearly 60 pelican chicks and more than 600 adults were brought to Fort Jackson in June after oil washed onto a rookery on Queen Bess and other nearby islands in coastal Louisiana.

They're among more than 1,000 oiled birds and more than 100 oiled sea turtles rescued since the BP-leased rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 workers. About three-quarters of the birds and all but a handful of turtles have been cleaned in Louisiana.

All but two of the sea turtles - a 150-pound oiled loggerhead dubbed Big Mama and an 85-pound loggerhead that was sick but free of oil - are juveniles, ranging from saucer- to dinner-plate size.

Doses of fluids, antibiotics and a mix of cod-liver oil and mayonnaise used to help break up the oil they've swallowed are administered based on the animal's weight. But the basic treatment is the same.

"The difference is it takes five people to lift Big Mama and her sister. It only takes one person to lift the little guys," said Michele Kelley, Louisiana's sea turtle and marine mammal stranding coordinator.

Baby turtles leave their sandy nests and head straight for the sea knowing everything a turtle needs to know.

Chicks need far more care.

Keeping them warm can be the biggest challenge, and tern chicks are among the hardest to keep alive because they're so small, said IBRRC staffer Mark Russell.

The birds lose body heat through their skin, and smaller animals have more skin in proportion to their size than larger creatures. Some of the tern chicks are smaller than a tennis ball.

The chicks also tend to be dehydrated and malnourished.

"If they're dehydrated, they don't want to eat because they feel sick," Russell said. And they're so small that it's hard to keep a tube down their throats to give water and liquid food.

In the week he'd been in Louisiana, he knew of two or three tern chicks that died, Russell said Friday.

Once a chick is eating on its own, staff have as little contact with it as possible.

"We don't want to be raising what is commonly referred to as a pier rat," said Wendy Fox, director of Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, the Miami rehabilitation center where the pelican chicks were moved Saturday.

The babies will be housed next to adult "role models," and eventually with adults, Fox said. Their pens also have pools deep enough to dive for fish. Pelicans take five to six months to reach independence.

At Fort Jackson, one of the youngsters perched alongside a pool and flapped its wings energetically.

"See that?" Holcomb said. "He's almost ready to learn to fly!"

And the OIL GUSHES on.

This is disheartening.

85 days after an oil explosion on April 20, 2010 and NO ONE KNOWS.

The fact is that NO ONE KNOWS what BP is really attempting to do.

NO ONE KNOWS if BP is trying to CAP the well or have they wasted 85 precious days specifically focused on CAPTURING and SELLING more of the oil.

NO ONE KNOWS why this most recent attempt was not made 85 DAYS AGO or if they were once again trying to CUT COSTS.

NO ONE KNOWS why OBAMA rubber-stamped the Deepwater in the first place despite HIS hand-picked scientist WARNING him it was NOT SAFE. (Rolling Stone)

NO ONE KNOWS why our government permits OFFSHORE DRILLING if NO ONE KNOWS how to cap a well in an emergency.

NO ONE KNOWS why the 500k shutoff valve required by other countries was NOT REQUIRED by the OBAMA administration.

NO ONE KNOWS why OBAMA has NOT fulfilled his campaign promise to END ALL OFFSHORE DRILLING.

NO ONE KNOWS if OBAMA being THE highest-paid recipient by BP of campaign donations in 2008 was a CONFLICT of interest.

NO ONE KNOWS why Energy Committee REP. MARKEY wasted valuable time in hearings asking EACH and EVERY OIL Executive if they were "EMBARRASSED" by the inclusion of "walruses" in their oil emergency plans.

NO ONE KNOWS why OBAMA continues to authorize BP to spray COREXIT (named a "FETAL TOXIN" by the EPA) in the Gulf.

The only action I can take without being fined or imprisoned is to NOT VOTE DEMOCRAT in all upcoming elections.
________________________________________________________________________________

On another thread, you come right out and say "VOTE REPUBLICAN". You portray yourself as a disgruntled former Obama supporter, but not even the most naive, far-left progressives who expected Obama to totally transform every aspect of our country, are calling for putting Rethugs back in power.

So I'm calling you our as a liar, a fraud and a Republican infiltrator. which Rethugs would you have us vote for? Sharron Angle, who believes in doing away with Social Security, Medicare, the Dept. of Education and the EPA? Not *reformimg*, DISMANTLING.

Or Rand Paul, who wants to do away with the Americans With Disabilities act and other "entitlements" and who believes that parts of the Civil Rights act are unconstitutional .... specifically the part that bans businesses from refusing to serve people of color??

Put the party who ALLOWED BIG OIL TO WRITE THEIR OWN "RULES", BACK IN POWER??

I even question your screen name. If you're really a vegan, why are there no comments from you on any of the articles about the horrors and health hazards of Factory Farming? There's a new one just today, about the lies told to the public about dairy farms in California.

I SMELL TEA BREWING, UNDER COVER. GO AHEAD, PROVE ME WRONG.

animals and birds (nonhumans) have not destroyed our planet--they are smarter than us in that way. we are the ones who need to learn from them. nonhumans kill for food, not dominance alone, and they do not pollute the planet. when you can't breathe the air, eat the contaminated food, drink the polluted and toxic water, you may wish you had learned from the nonhumans. many of the nonhumans are actually more intelligent than we are. we are the ones who have not learned what they already know. god has created such beautiful species--but we are the biggest failure in god's creation. i can't understand why anyone would want to slap a bird out of the hands of a volunteer who is trying to save it. this is sick. there are services in existence now to help kids in inner cities and the homeless. why begrudge helping the nonhumans? you think humans are so important? well, when the planet is overrun with humans--breeding and breeding, exhausting the finite resources of the planet--when the earth dies from the weight of all these humans--remember you are one of those who didn't get it, who didn't help, and who actually wanted to slap those who tried to help the earth. you should be ashamed of yourself. you need to learn about the value and beauty of the nonhumans and what atrocities humans have done and are doing-- to each other, to the earth and its creatures.

If someone slapped a bird out of my hands when I was trying to save it, I would spaz out on them SO hard... They'd wish they never did that. They'd end up with a mouthful of that oily sand.

It is not just the birds but the baby dolphins and turtles that BP has killed. Never to forget the 11 people they killed and the 1500 workers who have ended up in hospitals with respiratory problems etc... Who knows what long term effects this will have on animals and people. Shame on BP! I hope Exxon does buy them out.
08:15 AM on 07/13/2010
had-enough,

Yes, "SHAME" on BP and "SHAME" on Obama for rubber-stamping the Deepwater and "SHAME" on Congress for doing NOTHING to stop the spraying of the dispersants OR to END all contracts with BP, at the very least.

BP is STILL operating another rig, the Atlantis off the Louisiana Gulf coast that is missing 90% of it's blueprints and is a safety hazard per a whistleblower testifying before Congress.

26 House members did send a letter to the President to shut down Atlantis. You can guess how far that went.

This President was THE highest-paid by BP recipient of campaign donations in 2008.

Can you say COLLUSION and COVERUP for the "drunk driver" permitted to handle the SCENE OF THE CRIME?

Obama has the Gulf coast under MARTIAL LAW with anyone coming within 65 feet of the Coast Guard's barrier being threatened with FINES and/or IMPRISONMENT.

I don't know if you're just shockingly misinformed (maybe been watching Fax News?), or lying on purpose, but you are DEAD WRONG, on all counts.

The rubber stamping was done by Bush/Cheney's criminally corrupt Interior Department, most of which has now been cleaned up and re-organized.

Obama's DOJ just issued a *third* moratorium on new drilling in the Gulf (lets see how long before an oil-connected, Bush appointed judge strikes this one down).

The "martial law" comment is ridiculous and further illustrates your ignorance. The problems with the Coast Guard stemmed from orders from state officials, not Obama or the feds. It's mostly cleared up now, although it's a fine line between allowing access and protecting public health and safety.

You're just embarrassing yourself with your lies and uninformed ranting. .

Bobby Jindal's $350 Million Dollar Boondoggle... a Failure...

Chandeleur sand berm segment shrinking like a wool sweater in hot water!

If a single picture is worth 1,000 words this 3-picture 378-word post is short on verbiage but long on information.

Regular readers of LaCoastPost know that I have long been challenging the wisdom and effectiveness of constructing artificial sand berms for the specific purpose of intercepting intruding oil. I’m far from alone in this controversy and all the scientists with whom I have spoken share my concerns. For example, see the article by Amy Wold in the July 11 The Advocate, which describes the decision to build the sand berms as driven more by politics than science.

GULF COAST OIL SPILL AND GOD’S BIRDS

The keeping of birds is part of history
How far back no one can know.
Once luxury pets of kings and queens
Or on the shoulders of pirates long ago.

Birds have remained on man's menu
Though all can be tamed as a pet.
Chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys
Are served on the tables we set.

Noah sent a dove to find dry land
And it returned with an olive leaf from a branch.
God gave birds feathers for clothes
So in the elements they would have a chance.

Birds are a gift from God to man
To be left alone to do their thing.
We have fouled their world and oiled their plumage
And yet they continue to sing.

As we watch the Gulf Coast headlines
Most can’t help but shed tears of sorrow.
What will happen to all God’s creatures
And how many shall vanish tomorrow?

Thank you to all of these volunteers.

I have to say that Obama and a majority DEM congress allowing this to happen is INTOLERABLE.

Obama rubber-stamped the rig and is ordering continued dispersants sprayed in the Gulf, further sickening people and killing animals.

I cannot imagine the HELL all of the wildlife is going through being blown away by the gushing oil, suffocating, struggling to clean the oil off them and dying a slow, painful death.

If there is KARMA, I wish the same treatment on every individual involved in the cause and continuing cover up of this ATROCITY.

And what on earth could be his rationale for continued use of Corexit? Any possible answer to this question leads to the same conclusion: it is diabolical, absolutely diabolical. He and the EPA and whoever else know full well that the dispersants are killing everything in the sea and will be killing people soon enough.
08:09 AM on 07/13/2010
Yes, bjo, it IS "diabolical. I agree.

Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director for Food and Water Watch wrote about the connection between a former BP Executive and Board Member who is now on the Board of Directors for Nalco, the manufacturer of COREXIT.

This is a MUST READ: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wenonah-hauter/is-bp-the-fox-guarding-th_b_641459.html

BP is making big bucks off the dispersants and our President apparently is just fine with that.

The dispersants break up the oil so that it is impossible or difficult to measure for FINING purposes. Oil companies are charged for each barrel of OIL.

BP is also charged for each ENDANGERED SPECIES they kill. The burning of the oil by the COAST GUARD and trapping of the Kemp's Ridley sea turtles eliminates the evidence as well for FINING.

Knowing the TOXICITY of the COREXIT and the 2-Butoxyethanol, and that it is POISONING people and animals, I don't know HOW this President SLEEPS at night.

Obama and Congress have "asked" and now they are saying they "demanded" BP "minimize" the use of COREXIT.

This is sick and twisted PLAYACTING by the President and Congress and this is a DEMOCRAT (they are NOT democratic) majority.

The only action I can take without being fined or imprisoned is to NOT VOTE DEMOCRAT in all upcoming elections.
