Unemployment Extension Standoff To Continue For At Least Another Week

First Posted: 07/12/10 07:14 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:00 PM ET

Unemployment

Senate Democrats will remain one vote short of the 60 needed to reauthorize unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless at least until the end of the week, as West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he wants to wait until the state legislature has cleared up the law on how to fill the Senate seat left behind by the late Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.).

Manchin previously said that he could name a replacement as soon as the beginning of the week, but on Monday his office told HuffPost he'd make his announcement by Sunday at the latest and Friday at the earliest.

"He intends to make the appointment by week's end," a spokesman said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has repeatedly said that Senate Democrats need Byrd's replacement to break the filibuster by Republicans and Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson, whose approval -- had he decided to give it -- would have ended the endless debate that has already cut off unemployment checks to some 2.1 million people.

By the time Byrd's replacement is sworn in, more than 2.5 million people who've been out of work for longer than six months will have missed checks they would have received had Congress reauthorized the stimulus programs it allowed to lapse at the end of May. President Obama's 2009 stimulus bill and subsequent legislation gave the unemployed up to 99 weeks of benefits in some states. With the federally-funded extended benefits lapsed, in most states the unemployed are eligible for only 26 weeks of state-funded benefits.

The congressional holdup owes to the Republican Party's and Ben Nelson's insistence that the $33 billion cost of extending the benefits not be classified as "emergency spending" and added to the deficit -- even though the cost of extended unemployment benefits has, throughout the 20th century, always been classified as emergency spending during times of recession.

Some Democrats view the new-found deficit concern as an effort to crater the economy and make the November midterm elections difficult for Democrats; others also see it as an effort to fundamentally undermine unemployment insurance.

That's the view espoused by Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who on Monday told HuffPost he sees unemployment benefits as a "necessary evil." Kyl and other Republicans have signaled they will not insist that revenue lost to tax cuts for the wealthy be offset by spending costs elsewhere. It's a matter of reducing the size of the government:

"The money does not belong to the government," Kyl said. "And yet that's what this kind of a rigid pay-go rule would assume, that the money belongs to the government and, therefore, if you're going to deny the government some of that revenue through a tax cut, you have to make the government whole because the government can never lose any money. That would mean that you could never reduce the size of government."

I've been unemployed for two years. Been looking for jobs can't find one no where. I agree that the government needs to give us all extenstions where we can at least pay our bills. I also agree that the government could give us all $500,000.00 to a $1,000,000.00 they would have been better off than giving to the banks, car dealers and whom ever else they gave it too. Would have been cheaper on them. Come on government help the US citizens!!!!!

How ANYONE on Capital Hill can continue playing games with the well being of millions of American Citizens... TAX PAYING American Citizens, is beyond me. It is my fervent hope that the one Democratic no from the last vote faced serious censure from his fellow Democrats, and a warning that a unified front must be presented. With tomorrow's appointment to replace Senator Byrd, that magic number will be reached, and tuesday a collective sigh of relief from faces all turned towards Washington D.C. will in all likelihood threaten to blow the city off the map.

I am a New York State certified teacher who was denied tenure, for latenesses, in 2003. Since then, I have been blackballed and not able to obtain employment in the DOE. It breaks my heart! I should be entering my eleventh year of teaching and earning in excess of $80,000, instead I am sitting at home sending out resumes for jobs where most schools are requesting ivy league graduates or Teach for America, etc. applicants. I am subsisting on the $214 that I receive in unemployment benefits and haven't received a cent since June 15th! Although it sounds very pathetic and I haven't found ONE person either in the NYCDOE, UFT, political arena, etc. to help me and I continue to owe $50,000 in student loans, I do my best to keep the faith and hope to get back to work very soon. After all, there continue to be vacancies for teachers!

p.s. My UI claim began in April so that I only received the 26 weeks. I've sent out hundreds of resumes and have completed many applications online. On June 16 (thanks to my son), I even attended a job fair in Florida. It's not like I'm just sitting around doing nothing. I just want to work and, if I could, I would even relocate.

Have you consulted a lawyer about that "blackballing?" I am assuming that you learned your lesson about the lateness.

Attorneys only advised that the statute of limitations had passed. Yes, I learned my lesson - but, on the other hand, i had put requests in so that they would be excused and the woman chose not to.

I'm not as educated as most of the people posting on this site but I would just like to say a few things. I for one have been out of work for almost 2 years, I have 4 children and have pretty much lost everything that I have owned. Last year I lost my car and now the company want to do an asset search for what is remaining after the sale of the car. They won't find much. I'm not going to cry about my situation. People today need to help people. It is pretty clear that our so called leaders can't seem to help anybody but themselves. I don't have hardly any thing left or much to give anybody but when I found out a family living close by had 4 kids and was living in a shelter with a set of newborn twins it broke my heart. I will do what I can do to help this family as I have 7 month old my self, as well as 3 teenagers. When our nations leaders started God out of our nation, our nation started going down hill and in my opinion there will be no change until God is put back in our nation. I don't have a job or unemployment or even spending, but I have God on my side and through him anything and everything is possible. Believing is the only thing that has gotten me through.
02:34 PM on 07/15/2010
God bless you and your family. I am crying for you right now, but I admire your belief that with GOD on your side, you will all be ok, somehow.

Much love to you all!

Most people in Washington are out of touch with real life. Instead of giving all that money to the Banks, Car Dealers, Big Companies they could have sent each LEGAL American Tax Payer $500,000.00 so that we could have paid off our home loans, credit cards, purchased new cars, repaired our homes, paid off student loans. This would have cost the government less money than they spent bailing out the Banks, Car Dealers, ect. The American people would have had money to put it back into the ecomony. Now everybody is out of work, (53 years old) and can't find a job. Now unemployment has run out and can't pay my house note, buy food. Get real WASHINGTON, we are not lazy people, there ARE NOT JOBS. Have been appling for a year. STOP SENDING OUR JOBS OVERSEAS. YOU ARE DISTROYING THIS COUNTY.

I have never voted for a Democrat in my life but that will soon change. Anyone trying to balance the budget on the backs of the unemployed has lost touch with the people they "use" to represent. Republicans think they are going to make gains in the House and Senate, they have a rude awakening coming. 74% polled say "help the unemployed inspite of the deficit." That's a staggering number in an election. There are alot more like me than they are counting on. Shame on you Ben Nelson and rest of the special interest sucking Republicans. You will not only have to answer to the voters but to your maker as well someday. I'd love to hear you you explain your actions to Peter when that day comes. I suspect you should have plenty of old friends where you are going.

Republicans are bent hell in making this country the land of the haves and have nots pretty much like Saudi Arabia. Under the rethugs, the middle class will become an extinct species.

The one person the other day that thought an unemployment extension would be a drain on our already strained treasury might want to ponder this: The old Native American saying about "Walk a Mile in my Moccasins." I personally, have not had any work for a year now, and no full time permanent job since 7-2007. I live in Kansas City. The unemployment rate in Missouri, where I worked, is about 9.3%. In Kansas where I live, it is only 6.3%. Fortunately, I have a roommate, so between his disability and my unemployment extensions, we have been able to make it since I got laid off last July. But 90% of our food has been coming from food banks, and we are on monthly pay plans for the utilities that total over $500 per month. To clear up their misconception of long-term unemployed persons, I have to respond that I, personally hate being unemployed. Ask anyone over 55 who has been on an extended job search, and they will tell you that looking for a job in this economy is about 10 times harder than actually working a job.
I still feel the benefits should be extended, and the President should be more involved, like, yesterday.

I have been unemployed for 11 months. My benefits ran out on June 15, I have had no income since. I have applied to over 100 jobs, i have also relocated over 300 miles from where I previous lived with the assumption that the job rate was better. I have been at the new place for 4 months, and I still have not found a job. I look, I apply everyday; but still nothing. I am now behind in my rent, utilities, and my car payment is due on the 25th (doesn't look like they will get paid). The credit cards I gave up on them months ago when I was face with paying the credit cards or eating, paying the utilities, or the car payment. So my credit is now ruined. Now I'm faced with being homeless. I have always been employed. Always paid my bills on time. And now nothing. Senators PLEASE PASS AND EXTENSION! We the people need this, it is the difference between eating or not, the difference between living or dying.

There are 435 members of house, 100 members of the senate. Thats around 93 MILLION a year we pay them to do their job. Do we really think they are making what they are worth?
