Facebook iPhone App CRASHING: Widespread Issues Reported

UPDATE: Most users say the Facebook app is back to normal. There are still some isolated issues being reported.

Do you own the Facebook iPhone app? It's likely crashing this evening, Tuesday, July 13, 2010.

Whether you own a 3G model, 3GS or employ the new OS4, it doesn't seem to matter, as users with all such iPhones are reporting problems on Twitter.

Thousands of "Facebook app crashing" tweets have been posted tonight, and the issue is not limited to the United States. This writer also tried to load the Facebook app, only to be kicked off upon loading.

Mathew Ingram, a senior writer at GigaOm, tweeted around 10:30 p.m. EST, "seeing multiple reports about Facebook apps on the iPhone crashing on loading (mine did as well) -- anyone else?"

Ingram later tweeted that he deleted the app and reinstalled it on his iPhone 3GS, but "it still crashes instead of loading."

No word yet from Facebook on the cause of the issue or when a fix will be available.

One HuffPost reader, Martin G., wrote in with his experience and offered some speculation on what may be contributing to the app's issues:

It seems facebook app is the victim of some bad JavaScript, either because they have changed something in their dynamic content, ads or perhaps something more sinister. I have not dug into how facebook displays it's [sic] pages and I have no previous frame of reference to make a positive conclusion but what I did find is that facebook.com on the ipad safari browser reports and [sic] error a short time after loading the news feed. That same error seems to be causing the app to crash when loading the "live news" feed.

Had the same issue with the Facebook app. I reinstalle­d and it's working fine. However, since loading the new OS the phone acts a bit peculiar. It's not as smooth transition­ing between apps etc. I've had the phone for awhile now and this is a first.

It didn't just affect the apps on the iPhone, but it also affected apps that you have posted on your FB page ... all of my and my "friends" profile apps were missing from our pages for the entire day, into the night. All seems to be fine now though.

I thought it was 2012 and the world was coming to an end. The Facebook iPhone app failed to load. I even thought about stop taking my anti-psych­otic meds I was so disturbed.

Mine crashed and I had to delete the app last night. Was going to reload it this morning but now I will forget about it until they find out what went wrong and FIX IT!!!

Whew! I just bought my very first itouch (in lieu of changing a good carrier for a horrible carrier just to have the iphone for the gadgetry) three days ago & when this started happening to me last night I flew into a panic (mostly because I did not purchase the $20 extra service warranty thing they tried to sell me). Good to know it wasn't my brand new itouch!

After uninstalli­ng and reinstalli­ng the Facebook App, I finally decided to install FaceClip (the Facebook App the allows one to view videos). It requires you to sign onto your Facebook account in order to view videos that are on Facebook. After I did that the standard Facebook App began to load correctly.

Mine corrected itself after I just gave up around midnight & went to bed. When I woke up this morning, it was back to normal. Hope yours is too by now!
