Whether he's meant to stay or move on I hope he doesn't suffer. I'm not a fan of the Yankees and have had plenty of criticisms for Steinbrenner, but I don't wish prolonged suffering on anyone.

And good for you for that sentiment. I'm always amazed by the need some people seem to have to come on here and say terrible things about people who are ill are have died, be it Michael Crichton, Tony Snow, whoever.

Sad to hear. Love him or hate him, he is a larger-than-life figure, and one of the few sports franchise owners who is a household name. The Jacksons and Martins and A-Rods have passed through over the years, but Steinbrenner remained a staple.

It is amazing how long it takes the world to catch up to the news.

The death was broken almost an hour ago on the Opie and Anthony radio programme and followed by the twitter.

According to traditional news he is not even dead yet.

I hope he recovers and get well.

At least with the money he made from acting in Seinfeld, his family will be taken care of

I didn't always agree with the way he ran the Yankees, but being a fan of the team since childhood I was always appreciative of the guy and his desire to put a winning team out there.

It's hard to disagree with the way Mr. Steinbrenner ran the team given its success.

His team didn't win them all but they won more than any other team. By every measure, in sports where your opponent sets out to beat you, he and his team are a great success and they provided New York and its visitors and TV viewers with untold hours of great entertainment.

That is true. The team went from being almost worthless to a billion dollar entity, but my issues were more with the meddling with the team, notably the constant changing of managers and general managers. Thankfully by the 1990's he mellowed out and got out of the way and let Gene Micheal, Joe Torre and the rest do their business. Without a doubt, you can like him or not like him, but without question he will go down as one of the greatest team owners in sports history.

How about that he cared enough about the fans and the legacy of his stored franchise to always do his best to put a quality product on the field? Sometimes they won, sometimes not, but it was never for a lack of trying. Good moves, bad moves, he made a lot of both running the team, but always tried to build a winner - unlike a number of sprts team owners who perpetually put weak teams on the field.

How about that he is a smart business man having bought the team for $10M and turned them into a billion dollar multi-media empire?
