Yovani Gallardo: I'll Boycott MLB All-Star Game Over Arizona Immigration Law

Yovani Gallardo Mlb All Star Game Boycott

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Yovani Gallardo is firm. Even if he's fortunate enough to make the All-Star team again next summer, he'll skip it.

"If the game is in Arizona, I will totally boycott," the Milwaukee Brewers pitcher said Monday.

A year before Phoenix is set to host baseball's big event, the state's new immigration law kept drawing the attention of major leaguers.

Kansas City reliever Joakim Soria, who leads the majors with 25 saves, said he would support a Latino protest and stay away. Detroit closer Jose Valverde can see himself steering clear, too.

"It's a really delicate issue," said Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista, who leads the majors with 24 home runs. "Hopefully, there are some changes in the law before then. We have to back up our Latin communities."

"If I do get chosen, I don't know what I'm going to do," he said.

About three dozen protesters held signs Monday one block from the hotel where Major League Baseball held its welcoming news conferences. The demonstrators said they had over 100,000 petitions asking commissioner Bud Selig to move the 2011 All-Star game out of Arizona.

Another protest was planned outside Angel Stadium before Tuesday night's game.

Selig has not spoken directly on the subject. Asked in May about calls to shift next year's game, he gave a defense of baseball's minority hiring record. Selig did not take questions at Monday's All-Star introductory event.

Arizona's much-debated measure takes effect July 29. The statute requires police, while enforcing other laws, to ask about a person's immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally.

"They could stop me and ask to see my papers," Soria said. "I have to stand with my Latin community on this."

The Mexican-born Gallardo said he's talked with Soria and San Diego's All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez about the Arizona law.

"We don't agree with it," Gallardo said. St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols said he opposed the law and Valverde called it "dumb."

Several All-Stars avoided the topic.

"That's a political thing," New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano said. "I don't have anything to say about it. They already made a decision. If I say anything it's not going to make any difference."

"Wrong guy," teammate Alex Rodriguez said, pointing to other players in the interview room.

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal said he would wait for guidance from the players' union.

"The game is going on at this point, regardless," said former All-Star Tony Clark, who played for Arizona last season and now works for the union. "Whatever decision an individual player makes, they would have the full support of the union."

The union has already condemned the law and said that if it is not repealed or modified additional steps would be considered.

Oakland closer Andrew Bailey, whose team holds spring training in Phoenix, said his sport was caught in a crossfire.

"The Arizona Diamondbacks and Major League Baseball had nothing to do with making the Arizona immigration laws," he said. "I know there are discrepancies. Hopefully, things can get resolved."

Don't worry Gallardo.
You won't get voted in so nothing to stress about.

Ironic that his team is the Brewers, but he's not on Brewer's team.

Yeah, stay home then! And stop talking out of both sides of your mouth. Boycott now, you double talker! The fact that you ball players are making a political statement is ridiculous anyway. Shut your mouth unless you want to count your money out loud. Arizona is trying keep its people safe from ILLEGALS. Twist the facts all you want, but it's still ILLEGAL profiling, NOT RACIAL profiling. What would you be hollering if the people across the southern border were white skinned Germans or olive skinned Italians? It's about ILLEGAL! ILLEGAL!
07:46 PM on 07/17/2010
your racial profiling by assuming every Latino is from another country and not your U.S. American counterpart. There are many Latinos who have been U.S. citizens for many generations. "Yeah, stay home then!" My home is here.

Actually, your post above makes no sense. You're just an angry guy right now. Go cool off somewhere then read my post again. I am NOT ATTACKING brown skinned people...only OVER SENSITIVE people of ANY color. Geez buster.

Actually, if you believe what you say and support the law, then you are supporting an illegal, ie unconstitutional law that violates the fourth, fourteenth amendments and Article Six of the US constitution. So, if illegal is illegal, as is SB 1070, you should as a matter of principle oppose it.
11:14 PM on 07/26/2010
You are arrested for a DUI. How is that an Unreasonable search? The law does not require hit squads to go out and look in basements for illegals. It requires you to look into the situation if you have reason/cause. You are against asking for Green card? I got asked for my ticket when I went to movie theater a while back. I got asked for my receipts when I picked up dry cleaning once. But you can't ask if you are an illegal who has broken the law?
The 14th Amendment? You mean law enforcement doing their job and protecting me from illegals? You will advocate for illegal immigrants but not for me as a citizen? My rights first.
Article 6? You mean the same laws that the Federal Govt has that SB 1070 and the Rhode Island law is patterned after?

If you are so against SB1070 do you have any suggestions for us to combat the rising trend of illegal immigrants?

So stay home. Why aren't you already boycotting Arizona? I know that your teams have games scheduled in Arizona this year. If it's racist to be for the Arizona law, it's just as racist to make exceptions to the law for folks who share a ethnicity especially when other folks are playing by the rules. Nothing is stopping Hispanic folk or any other groups from returning to their countries and applying for U.S. citizenship legally. And while you're at it, those huge salaries that you baseball players get. They come in part from the tickets that a lot of supporters of Arizona's immigration purchase. Maybe one day folks will boycott you.

I'm a five generation U.S. Citizen, I have every right to voice my opinion as a U.S. Citizen, because of how I look, you would just assume that I came from another country. Yes I'm Latino, but I'm an American first. If I don't agree with you, that gives you the right to tell me to go "home", to a country I was, or my parents where never born. Your comment is why I don't agree with discrimination and racism, or anything about how you feel about other Americans who don't agree with you. I agree we need to secure our borders, but I don't agree with Discrimination or remarks like yours.

Noah you are missing the point. We are NOT IN FAVOR OF RACIAL PROFILING. We are against it. BUT!! And this is a big but.... Every person in America needs I.D. We all get asked for I.D. all the time. Everywhere we go! And not just in the U.S. All over the world ppl are asked for their I.D. by officials and the authority. If anyone complains they're being racially profiled, it is only because they are too sensitive, uneducated on the big picture and too quick to jump on a Riot Wagon. That's wonderful you are a happy 5th generation citizen, but that doesn't matter how many generations were here before you. The issue now is YOU NEED TO HAVE I.D. and realize that WE ALL NEED I.D. Geez... I think some of you whiners are thick skulled ninnies!!!!

Many states have very similar laws to Arizona, but there is no call to boycott them.
Here is California's law:
834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is
suspected of being present in the United States in violation of
federal immigration laws.
(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected
of being present in the United States in violation of federal
immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the
following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen
of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent
resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time
or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of
immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not
be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and
place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding
documentation to indicate his or her legal status..
(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city,
county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with
jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent
or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly
prohibited.

California's law is in cooperation with Federal Law. Arizona makes their own, distinct separate laws that are similar to, but not the same as Federal law. It is completely different.

In California, a LEGAL immigrant cannot be carted off to jail because they forgot their naturalization papers at home. In Arizona, it's a requirement and not only that, the person would have to pay for his or her own imprisonment.

The AZ law is not distinct from federal law, as federal law also requires immigration papers to be carried by those in the country on visas. Every other country has this same requirement. Also AZ law (and jail booking criteria) does not allow for someone to be booked in jail if they are here legally and merely forgot their paperwork. That information can be verified in the field and the person sent on their way.

With regard to paying for own imprisonment; AZ is not the only state to do this. Massachusetts also has this as do many individual counties across the nation. It saves money as jail costs eat up a large percentage of county budgets.

Being Latino is not a crime!
05:28 AM on 07/14/2010
If the players boycott the All-Star game wouldn't they in essence be condoning the violence which includes murder that has been perpetrated against U.S. citizens by illegal immigrants along the border because of the federal governments failure to secure the border and protect its own law abiding citizens?
05:16 AM on 07/14/2010
Let him boycott the game. Ask the families of the victims of robbery or murder if they know or care what Galliardo thinks. Arizona is correct in what they're doing. We are talking about curbing ILLEGAL, not undocumented, unchecked, lost, wandering immigrants...ILLEGALS who burden our health system, our welfare system and our legal system to name a few. If you feel strongly about this, I urge you to take in a few "Undocumented visitors", and feed, clothe and house them. Pay for their health care, their schooling, and expect nothing in return. That is what all Americans are being asked to do, and we have too many citizens that need help first. We disrespect and dishonor the efforts of our ancestors who came in anxious to become citizens. They learned English and were proud to do so. They became Americans, assimilated into society and helped build this country through the industrial age. If the present government were in power 100 years ago, we'd be pushing 3 for Italian, 4 for German, 5 for Polish, etc. This is the most serious problem of our time. Please get better informed, and help to solve this serious situation. We as AMERICANS, are all in this together.

if MLB boycotts next years game I will never watch or attend another game. Time to let the voters talk not MLB. MLB , I assume has a right to speak but so do the fans. Grow up , your boycott will hurt the people you say you love. A nation without borders is not a nation at all. RONALD REGAN

All theses MLB players should boycott the next World Baseball Classic because most countries have tougher immigration laws than AZ. When they are at it they should boycott the nation becasue the AZ law mirrors federal law.

Reports like this sure aren't going to be good PR for MLB
. The game has already lost many fans. I went to a game on Saturday and the stadium was on half full.
I was very disappointed that most of the players were born in other countries like Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Maybe 2 were Americans. After reading about Gallardo wanting to boycott Arizona. I have come to the conclusion that will not attend any more MLB games. The players should play the game and stay out of politics,

why would you care where most of the players were born? why would you be disappointed that most of the players were of hispanic dissent? the only explanation is that you are a racist.....
10:22 AM on 07/14/2010
It has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with baseball being called "The All American Sport"!
The problem with most sports are the over paid players thing they can call the shots now.

I'm sure there 100,000 signatures will be over shadowed by the millions who believe in controling our borders. I'ts time the people realize when they come to our country without proper procedures taken there are penalties. i am all for the people who do it the right way.
