8 Jobs In Which Women Make MORE Than Men (PHOTOS)

Working women unite -- the June report on women's earnings, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics this month, doesn't indicate any earth-shattering progress in the gender wage gap debate. Women are still earning less than men, although the exact pay gap depends on age. At worst, the 35-44 year-old woman makes 73.6 percent of what her male counterpart earns, while a 20-24 year-old woman makes 92.9 percent. This could, in part, be due to the fact that there are more women (69 percent) in lower-paying industries like health and education, versus lucrative engineering and computing roles (9 percent).

What did surprise us was discovering a handful of occupations, out of hundreds, where women actually made more than men. (One quick note: gender breakdown data was incomplete for more than a third of the occupations tracked by the BLS.)

Check out 8 occupations where women are actually earning more than men:

Science Technicians- Life, Physical and Social Science
1 of 9
Science technicians are like the blue-collared workers of the science industry: they set up lab instruments, operate and maintain them, and sometimes monitor and log results.

Falling in the "other" category of science technicians, the life-physical-social science category does not include technicians who specialize in agricultural and food science, biological, chemical, geological and petroleum or nuclear science.

Average weekly earnings:
Women: $740
Men: $723

This comparison doesn't note the age and education level of the men and women involved. For example, a woman with a college education may work as a teacher or low level scientist while her male counterpart is only doing this while he finishes school. To compare the earnings of a 20 something male with those of a 40 something female who has the same job due to the disparity is only justifying the issue. The truth is that while some men have these low paying jobs, they typically do not have them for the majority of their careers. When we look at lifetime earnings of women and men (even if they have had the same education and have not had to take time off for the care of family members), the men will ALWAYS earn more. Even in the Adult Entertainment industry women have a limited amount of time they can work and while men may go on to doing production or editing or something, women generally do not. Additionally, if we compare the short term earnings of "adult entertainers" (predominantly women) to the short term earnings of sports professionals (predominantly men), the men still come out ahead.

The bottom line is that women in our culture are undervalued and must shoulder social expectations that are as demanding as those of their male counterparts but lack compensation.

It is also worth noting that female adult performers often make at least three times as much as their male scene partners for the two hours of work time they spend together. While men tend to have longer careers in the p*rn business, savvy starlets can bank a lot of cash if they are thoughtful and motivated.

Stereotypical.

I was reading an article recently (Ancestry magazine - Jan/Feb 2010 - pp 35-39) that stated that average wages for men in certain fields [now dominated by women] fell when women began entering the workforce. The reason was...at that time for most of the women, the income was supplemental and thus they were willing to work for less than men who had to earn a living. This drove down wages for men as well as women.

This article is horribly insulting. The whopping EIGHT jobs identified have minimal differences in wage -- with most of the jobs being at or below poverty level. This isn't journalism; it's a false positive, and misleading. I urge the author to retract this article and report on the reality: that men continue to make 25% more on average, with the greatest differences in the professional-band (read: ones that pay the bills) jobs.

This article really couldn't be more insulting - unless of course you added prostitution and modeling to the list. Hey...both those professions are ones where women earn more. Why not add them? What about strippers? Come on HuffPost. You can do better than showcasing menial low paid jobs where women earn two dollars more an hour. TWO DOLLARS.

It seems like prostitution would be number 1 on this list. Probably with a commanding lead over the #2 field.

Whoop-de-do! None of these jobs provide enough income for the women, much less their families, to live!

The forgot models. Female models make more. And female poker players are paid equally. LOL

Most of these are jobs men don't want to do anyway. So how is this good for women?

Incredible.

Does anyone else see that the jobs pay they are comparing are basically low paying jobs for both genders? I mean, preschool/kindergarten teachers? Come on! And the amounts they presented are higher than reality - especially if their talking about private schools!

What a joke!
03:15 PM on 07/30/2010
Exactly! The entire article is ridiculously limited in scope and meaning. It also sends very mixed messages by implying something about job equity for women, of which there is none in this country. The rest of those who are trying to find equity jobs can only talk about porn jobs and modeling. It is very very sad.

I honestly thought before I started reading the article that we'd see comparisons of Software Engineers, CEOs, etc. How naive of me!
