Steinbrenner And Charity: How Did The Former Yankees Owner Give Back? (PHOTOS)

George Steinbrenner may have been the long-time face of the New York Yankees, but in his hometown of Tampa, Fla., he was just as well known for his generous philanthropic efforts.

Steinbrenner founded the Silver Shield Foundation in 1982, an organization that supports the families and children of slain NYPD officers.

From ABC Action News:

"Tampa is a great city" said Steinbrenner in a 2005 interview with Tampa Bay Metro Magazine. "The people make it great. New York's my home away from home, but I love Tampa, my wife loves Tampa."

Which do you think was his greatest contribution?

He's given generously to my alma mater, Grambling State University. He's donated money for scholarships, the Eddie Robinson museum and the renovation of our baseball stadium. He helped give our school national attention way back in 68 by letting us play a football game in Yankee stadium and bringing his team to play our baseball team in exhibition games, three times. I'm a dyed in the wool Mets fan, but I always give a nod to the Boss.

So the press loves him now? Not so much in previous times.

I lived in the Tampa Bay area for the first thirty two years George Steinbrenner owned the Yankees. Several of my friends worked for him and the word was consistent: high expectations and unbelievable compassion. The public saw the former and he did his best to hide the latter.

I know it is a lost art, but the book on the Boss by Bill Madden factually lays out Steinbrenners life. It is a great read and dispels many myths.

Hurricane Andrew was 1992, not 2002.

This is laughable. A few thousand here, a few thousand there, that's all anyone can find?? This man was a $$BILLIONAIRE$$ for crying out loud!

I tell you what. Give me a BILLION, like was given to him, and I'll give $500 MILLION of it away in the first day, or at least the first week.

If it not like he could afford to be giving away money while spending all that money on building a new stadium for his team that state and city had to dump loads of money into.

He was spending all his money on paying for things so that the brainless fans of the team could keep supporting it? Right?
