The photo shows a maintained trail in Grand Canyon National Parkinglot. While there are excellent trails there, summer may not be the optimum season for an introductory hike. If you go, carry at least a gallon of water per person per day. Temperatures on the rim may be cool but things heat up pretty quickly as you drop into the canyon. A fantastic, summer heat escaping technique? Hike at night... the night before, of, and after a full moon offer low temps and lots of light but watch for snattlerakes.

We live in a little town thirty miles outside of Los Angeles, in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. There are at least eight trail heads within three miles of the house. The trails vary from a nice stroll to challenging. Just make sure you have good boots, a broad brimmed hat, and plenty of water.

Here in Pennsylvania, I've never found a shortage of trails. Believe this or not, even the red parts of the state have really nice trails.

I'll give you one hint-don't come to Texas looking for outdoor fun in the Summer! Been here all my life and am astonished that people come down here in the summer and do things outdoors (that don't involve submerging yourself in water all day). But yep, don't complain to me about the heat when you bring your family down from Jersey to enjoy some fun in the sun (it's happened...).

I will go north to find trails in the summer.

I thought real Texans cut brush in the middle of summer.

Shrubs cut bushes, or is it the other way around? I can't remember...

Vermont, Vermont, Vemont. Also has fantastic state parks to camp in. Just drive slowly.... cops are just pathetic in this state of little crime and nothing else to do but take money from tourists.

I took a look at the guides/websites listed in the article and, on a lark, looked up the hiking possibilities listed in my area, the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Sadly, although the Whites have some of the most extensive hiking options in the country, the guides are at best grossly incomplete and list only a fraction of the options available. In some cases, they're downright inaccurate (broken links, too!).

There are far better sites available than the six listed, and most of them tend to be local to an area. I wonder how these sites might be added to the list, under a heading of "regional" or something like that?
