Apple Iphone 4 Press Conference

Apple is holding an iPhone 4 press conference on Friday to, presumably, address the new phone's antenna issues.

The iPhone 4 press conference, which will be taking place in Cupertino, is set to start at 10AM PT (1PM ET). Only a "handful of folks" have been invited, but that shouldn't stop you from following it "live," as it happens.

All Things D, Engadget, ZDNet, CNET, and MacWorld will be among the sites live blogging Apple's announcement.

What will Apple say? See what HuffPost Tech blogger Larry Magid thinks we'll hear from Apple. Tell us what you want to hear from them in the comments below.

There's a paradox in Jobs' July 16 presentation: he concedes that touching the antenna gap on the left side of the iPhone 4 can cause signal drop in low-signal areas, and that putting a case on the iPhone 4 solves that problem by preventing the user from touching that gap, but then he says this is the same problem that other cellphones have, in which merely shielding an internal antenna with the hand, causes signal drop. It's NOT the same problem, since other cellphones don't have an exposed antenna gap. Just because the symptom is similar doesn't mean the cause is the same. Apple messed up a great antenna design by putting that gap where many users often touch when using a cellphone as Apple prefers--bare, to show it off. Jobs, Ive, etc. say they don't have a case on their iPhone 4.

The videos of the iPhone 4 and other phones, showing the number of bars depending on how the phone is held, may look identical, but still the cause is different. If the iPhone 4's antenna problem was due to the same mere proximity of the hand to the antenna, then either putting a case on the iPhone 4 wouldn't help (but it does), because it would be redundant, and Apple wouldn't be giving away cases; or, putting a case on a cellphone that has an internal antenna, and which has just the hand-shielding issue, would fix that phone's antenna problem too (but it doesn't).

it's entertaining listening to the people being completely satisfied with a piece of plastic as a remedy to their $300 paper weight. didn't most of these people buy the iPhone for vanity reasons in the first place? for its "design' ? now they're totally happy to cover it up with a piece of plastic--i don't know if there's a clinical term for this kind of denial.

i'm a satisfied iPhone 4 owner, and I already have a case that I enjoy. I might get the free case just as a back up or change of style.

only 0.55% percent of people have complained about their iPhones... 3 million sold. Funny, the haters would have you thinking Apple was BP and that dolphins were dying because of this.

Looks like he's trying the "all phones have this problem" speech. Waiting for the tech media to lap it all up and regurgitate it out as if it were truth in 3...2...1....

Typical Apple arrogance: "If you don't want an iPhone 4, don't buy it".

He basically states "Yeah, the phone is flawed, but deal with it. We're Apple. Phones aren't perfect. We don't care if you don't like it doesn't work as a phone"

Typical Apple arrogance: "If you don't want an iPhone 4, don't buy it".

How exactly is that arrogant?.. he's simply stating a fact. If you don't like Apple products, buy another product. Man, it's like people who hate Apple need to have companies holding their hand, telling them they're wonderful and pleading for their business.

Apple just tells it as it is: We produce what we want - people seem to like it (judging by sales) - if you don't, no worries, get something else. If that's too harsh for your sensitive ears, then don't tune in.

Unlike the mystique Apple has created, it has never taken a "hands-on" approach to supporting its products. The company appears vague, evasive, and downright difficult to contact when problems arise. For the Apple brethren, I hope this time is different.

I own numerous Apple products and while they do have problems...but i have always received excellent tech support from Apple w/courteous and professional assistance.
01:55 PM on 07/16/2010
Difficult to contact? LOL......... Apple consistently gets the highest rating among computer companies for it's tech support. It's not even a contest. Apple Care support is the best in the industry.

I understand people who support Apple and its products. We have had good experiences and share our stories. What perplexes me are comments from obviously unbalanced people who stalk Apple threads simply to slander and disparage a company. For what reason. Do they envy Apple's success? Did they lose money in the stock market. Did Steve Jobs fire them or one of their family members? It really is an issue for the therapist's couch.
If you're a balanced human being, you'll say: good luck to Android phones. Good luck to Apple phones. Android and the iPhone OS will both bring out the best in each other. There's room for everyone. This infantile Apple-badgering is ridiculous, particularly since most of these people profess not to have even held an Apple product. All they can do is repeat gossip, founded or unfounded.

What ever... apple fanboyism is the only thing that is infantile... A majority of the comments I read on blogs from people who believe the Steve Jobs/mac should take care of the IPhone 4 problem are refuted by mac nutters who think anyone complaining about the Iphone not working properly are simply ridiculous, with comments like: "all electronic gadgets have problems and it is just something you learned to live with", "just get piece of tape for g0d sakes and stop crying",etc... These same MAC nutters were the ones running around for the past 10 years/ making a living of complaining about how crapping Microsoft products were for breaking and how any body who bought MicroSoft products got what they deserved as being the foolish people they were for not buying a mac... I mean it was only like three months ago that Steve JObs and mac were telling us the adobe products suck and flash is totally useless and should be thrown out with the garbage for its poor quality... There is a word for Mac Fan boys/girls... it's called HYPOCRYTS...
01:22 PM on 07/16/2010
I generally dont reply to infantile taunts of "fanboyism".
But check your spelling on HYPOCRYTS. I think you'll find, like the rest of your post, it's very wrong.
01:23 PM on 07/16/2010
HYPOCRYTS isn't a word. Ha. You made yourself look foolish.

Another game-changer™ from Apple. Wonder when they'll be patenting this 'finger-shorting' technology.

Not worth following live. We already know what he's going to say, quit holding it wrong and don't blame me for being left handed. This AFTER he gives the latest sales figures of ipad, iphone4 and app store sales.

The Decline and Fall of the iphone internationally is at hand when
you mix together its failed antenna system, inability to perform as a wifi hub,
and sluggish performance compared to the amazing new Androids.
See the article entitled 'Android 2.2 demolishes iOS4 in JavaScript benchmarks'

Your second point about the iphone4 being a failure in becoming a hot spot has sparked my interest. I searched all through youtube for the iphone4 being used as a hot spot and could find not one video. I know the phone claims to add up to 5 wifi connections, but I haven't even read of any blogs discussing its usage. The iphone may have jumped the gun in releasing it to early, before fully testing it out.

The HTC EVO says it can be used as a wifi hot spot, and connect up to 8 devices. After personally using the Evo I can vouch for this claim as well as many youtube videos specifically this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNR-xcm2d38

Amazing how people have already determined what Apple is going to say, and whether there's any value to what they're going to say. I love the open minds these people exhibit. Think they have an agenda?? Hmm. But it does tell you a lot about these folks..folks who are salivating over this Apple non-issue. All these people want is for Apple to fail. But they will be sadly disappointed. Sales of the iPhone 4 continue to be strong and show no signs of abating. Apple iOS-derivative-Android phones can only hope this antennna-non-issue gets more press,so that the well-publicized Android problems don't gain more traction.

Ultimately both phones will survive and do nicely. And despite immature rants like "the decline and fall", nothing could be further from the truth.
12:11 PM on 07/16/2010
"this Apple non-issue"

When interested parties progaganize and pander with slogans coming down from the top
of the crumbling ediface known as Apple, the readers smell the aroma of a corporation
whose greed is boundless. Intelligent people will all be going Android and the iphone4
supply chain will eventually be halted for lack of a single customer.
11:33 AM on 07/16/2010
Everyone knows how disappointed the world be when some PR VP shows up
and does a song and dance amounting to the status quo. This is almost
certainly going to be the case. It will be remembered as the day Android
became the standard given
the DECLINE AND FALL OF THE IPHONE.
12:21 PM on 07/16/2010
Can I get a amen?

ANDROID-Its what's for dinner! hmph!
01:59 PM on 07/16/2010
You're kidding right? An antenna issue that is being fixed for free, on a phone that 100s of others have tried to match (i.e. "Iphone killers") with absolutely zero success amounts to the decline and fall of the Iphone? Really? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Iphone 4 sales will continue to climb, and over the next 6 months alone we'll see the "decline and fall" of at least 3 more "Iphone killers."

You sir are hilarious.
