Malia Obama Summer Camp: First Daughter To Spend One Month At Sleepaway Camp

First Daughter Malia Obama will be going to summer camp, the AFP reports. In an interview with NBC, the President revealed that his oldest child will be spending four weeks at sleepaway camp when he was asked about his vacation plans:

"We're going to be trying to figure out where we're going to be able to take some time over the course of the summer," Obama said. "But a month of it's going to be taken up with Malia going away for camp, which she's never done before."

But there's no reason for Obama to worry! According to AFP, among Malia's bunkmates will be several Secret Service staffers.

Lovely Family!

My sister sends two of her babies off to camp tomorrow for the first time. She is very nervous about it. She would SO love to send the secret service with them.

The camp experience is one to be treasured for a lifetime. I sent my daughter to Space Camp when she was 11. It was 3000 miles away and she was in a camp that was 90% male. Since she was into science and fiction it remains one of our better decisions. Today @ 25,she's a Science Fiction writer and her camp experience is one of the things that helped her be able to merge reality with fantasy. As a parent you never really know which decision you make will be THEIR turning point. Malia will learn to navigate among strangers and find her own voice. Also my kid took the "RIGHT STUFF" award that year. (yes I'm still proud :-) * GO MALIA!!!!

I spent 10 of my childhood/adolescent summers at camp. Those are still some of my favorite memories. Hopefully Malia will have a wonderful experience!

I hear a lot of concern about Malia not really being able to have a "normal" camp experience because she'll be constantly joined at the hip by secret service. I pray that she will have them monitoring her activity 24/7 but I think that they are not just secret service personnel, some probably have established friendly relationships with her as well as protector while others have no objetive put to protect her. This makes life for Malia and Sasha near normal but always safe.

What a great treat for Malia!! Sending the little ones away to summer camp seems to be an experience that is less and less frequent for most kids, so hopefully her time away at camp can rekindle interest nationwide in what I always thought was a right of passage.

A twelve year old with the Secret Service tagging along, couldnt be much fun- I bet she opts out next summer. These kids do have a comfortable life, but theres nothing to replace a normal childhood without having to be robbed of ones privacy because of the ambitions of the parents, although their futures are made as adults. I guess there is a price to pay for every privelage.
