Charice Glee

MANILA, Philippines — Baby-faced teen singer Charice says she prepared for her debut on the hit Fox TV show "Glee" by getting Botox and an anti-aging procedure "to look fresh on camera," but her publicist said the Botox was for muscle pain, not for cosmetic reasons.

The 18-year-old Filipino singer with a booming voice, who recently released her self-titled debut album, saw her career skyrocket after appearing on Ellen DeGeneres' and Oprah Winfrey's talk shows. She underwent a 30-minute Thermage skin-tightening procedure and Botox injections to make her "naturally round face" more narrow, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo told ABS-CBN television.

However, Charice's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said in an e-mail Monday the Botox was "absolutely not cosmetic," and added said the treatment was for muscle pain in her jaw.

Belo did the Botox procedure in front of the cameras.

"You chew gum and it turns out to be a favorite super-exercise for these muscles, your chewing muscles. So we will show you, this muscle here it's a bit protruding," Belo said as she touched Charice's face. "It's like a ball, so we are going to Botox that in order to get it flat so she will have a cuter face ... we want to give you the apple cheek look because it's cute, right?"

Charice, in the same interview, said last week's face makeover was part of her big preparations for her appearance on the hit show's second season. She starts filming at the end of this month.

"All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is she good enough to pit against Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure," Charice said. Berry is portrayed by Lea Michele, who is 23.

In an earlier TV interview, Charice said she auditioned for "Glee" in mid-June in Los Angeles and was thankful to have been accepted.

"It's really a blessing," she said, adding she was "very proud to be an Asian, very proud to be Filipino."

On the streets of Manila on Monday, some residents who follow Charice had mixed feelings about what she did with her face.

"I think it's OK for women to have procedures done, but Charice is too young. Does she need it?" said Patricia Carpio, a 21-year-old student.

For Myrna Lumanao, a 23-year-old seller in a doughnut stall, looking natural is better. "I guess she can afford to have those procedures done because she has the money, but I wish she did not change her looks."

Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of New York's Society of Plastic Surgeons and director of plastic surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in New York, said he wasn't sure how someone so young could benefit from Botox.

"You would think that the makeup people could take care of (any wrinkles she might have) or that they could take care of it in post-production," he said.

But Roth said there might be some benefits for on-camera teens in Hollywood. "Some people do have hyperactive muscles and muscles are what create the wrinkles in certain types of expressions. ... It may be of some benefit for the camera, but I would be reticent to consider Botox for a normal 18-year-old."

Thermage is a non-surgical procedure that uses radio frequency technology, but Roth said evidence was inconclusive on whether skin can be tightened without surgery.

Born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco and raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appeared on TV talent shows in the Philippines and South Korea before she got a big break on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" at age 15.

She later appeared several times on the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and credits Winfrey for helping push her career.

Aaaah, this is the spokesperson of Dr. Botox. Charice has premature-ageing issues. That is why we recommended Botoxing her face. She also gritt her teeth when she sleeps, we took care of that. But the procedure also made her round-wide face narrower which appeals to American tweens and teen viewers. The procedure is actually an after effect but bad timing that she was picked in Glee. It is not beacause Filipinos are ugly-aborigine-looking. She just needed cure. Because one of her role in Glee is sleeping. You do not want the mic to pick-up her greeting teeth, do ya?

Now to your problem, You want to be 14 SOMETHING? Come to Philippines, we will botoxice your face so you look 14. The younger you want to look the more expensiver.

Text me at 1-800-BOTOX-4-14yrs.

Thank you. Pleasure making you look young. It is our business.

There was furor from American audience. So we stopped botoxing her face. That is why her face remained wide-load.
03:19 AM on 07/23/2010
you're really not funny. try again.
03:19 AM on 07/23/2010
um...you shouldn't talk, you look ugly yourself.

Why Charice?
03:47 PM on 08/10/2010
Because she is THE MOST TALENTED GIRL IN THE PLANET.

Useless botox injections for everybody! *Blows noisemaker and throws confetti* You're never too young to start feeling inadequate.

Makes sense. Lindsay Lohan got botox just for her mug shot, so there ya go.
12:09 PM on 07/21/2010
This puts me in mind of one of the great Sandra Cho's comments regarding how the network suits tried to alter her looks. They claimed that her face was "too round for TV" and encouraged her to fast in order to generally slim down and transform herself into something that would be more palatable to American audiences. I'll bet it's pretty much the same thing going on here. We can blame her, the show, her manager, the advertisers or whoever... just remember: they give us what we want, and apparently this is what we want.

Mr. Renato Pacifico...

I see in you a proud, "former" Filipino, who digs high IQ and is merciless in pouncing on the supposed weaknesses of a culture to which he "once" belonged.

I won't say your opinions are wrong or your notions mistaken, because you're entitled to them. I won't say you are pathetic, for that would be too uncharitable. And I won't say you are unpatriotic, for you no longer consider yourself Filipino.

But I can guess that you probably are someone who has learned a little bit more, achieved a little bit more, and thinks of himself a little bit more, than the "average" Filipino. I have no qualms about that. The only caveat: "A little of anything is a dangerous thing".

I've been living in the U.S. for 20+ years and consider it my home. And yes, you may look at me as someone who has achieved some level of success. You probably have, too.

But no matter how naive one may consider Charice for allowing events to happen the way they did by succumbing to the wily charms of a selfish, worldly woman named Dr. Belo, I am not presumptuous enough to even think about what you so brazenly suggest in these pages. For someone to say that Charice should be "deported" (?) simply reflects the mind of a mentally-weak person who thinks s/he never made and will never make mistakes in his/her life.

Thank you HUFFINGTONPOST!!!! THANK YOU! Now 18-year-old Charice Pempenco's 18-year-old Botox and facial implants is now viral! ABCNews pick it up ... the world is abuzz and atwitt with this reprehensible face tweak!

The Philippine Media thought it was cool for 18-year-old to have botox. They bannered it in headlines in the front pages. So proud their 18-year-old is going to America and had botox treatment. This GOES TO SHOW THAT PHILIPPINE MEDIA RUNS ON IDIOCY, CLUELESSNESS, OBLIVIOUSNESS lacking sensitivity .....

I WHICH SOMEONE HERE IN HUFFINGTONPOST would study the FESTIVE IDIOCY of PHILIPPINE MEDIA

nobody cares...and you're a loser.

I WON! Here is how I won. I badgered idiot Philippine journalists. I have them linked up to all site that are anti-18-year-old-having-botox. Philippine idiot journalists yanked it off their news. So the world would think, they are learning that 18-year-old shouldn't have botox. BECAUSE IT IS A BAD EXAMPLE.

I WON. Philippine idiot, oblivious, clueless, insensitive journalists LOST!!!!!

Not bad for a nutcase huh?

I saw her on Oprah. While she is talented, I couldn't get past her annoying behavior. No thanks!

One episode of Glee had Mercedes joining the Cheerios, but eventually realising she was beautiful as she was, she returned to her 'normal' form and singing with the Gleeks (as another instance of it 'takes all types to make the world'). So I find this story about a teen getting botox etc., to be incredibly disturbing and wonder if Glee producers had any input on this matter to counsel against such procedures.

Oh please, everyone on that show is one of the beautiful people. The whole "accept everyone for who they are" theme is a glaring irony when contrasted with the fact that the show's cast--just like any other scripted show and many reality shows--has to be "presentable" for television.

Ok wait....help me out here! She's 18, and getting 'cosmetic procedures' to make herself appear "fresh" on a lovably cheesy TV program about high schoolers? Is it me, or do we have a connectivity issue going on here?
12:00 PM on 07/21/2010
@slvrfox857, you seem to assume that the 18-year-old Charice did it all in a vacuum, that she understood everything about thermage and botox injections and made the decision all by herself.

What I'd suggest you consider for a moment is to think of the 18-year-old Charice as the trusting victim of a persuasive but scheming, PR-hungry cosmetic doctor who has no qualms about using her own baptismal god-daughter for her own selfish gain.

If you look at it that way, and if you think about the mistakes you yourself may have made in your late teens, then you'll probably be a kinder, less judgmental person than what your message reflects. And if you do, you'll be the better for it...

Very good point there FlipitGood. Let us go to Manny Pacquiao by using your very own words. How could Manny Pacquiao "understood everything about" Philippine style bloodtesting against Las Vegas style and Olympic style testing when he is just another boxer who has not finished high-school much more so understand law.

Let me elucidate further, Flip, Manny Pacman is a "nationalist" and "patriot" as our idyot Philippine media claimed him to be. BUT he hired a white American lawyer versus Mayweather instead of a UCLA Filipino-American law graduate.

Why? Because Filipinos cannot be trusted!

Wait, she became famous with that face...why alter it for a tv show?! It just doesn't make sense though--it was done for pain but also to give her face a better shape for television? Huh?

Charice, please don't get all Hollywood. I live in L.A. Trust me, a "fresh face" these days is one that hasn't been touched. You're so young...
05:32 AM on 07/21/2010
Shirley, this is my take on what happened:

It is possible that Charice intended to only have acne treatment and some facials, so that she would "look fresh". But the doctor, who happens to be her godmother, may have talked her into having additional procedures "for free". Trusting in the doctor's wisdom, Charice may have said, "Yes, Ninang (godmother), if you think it's good for me...".

With TV cameras and reporters around, Dr. Belo proceeds to explain the procedures to the media while performing them on Charice. Ahh, the media was prepared for Dr. Belo's demo!

Can you see something here? An 18-year-old Charice succumbing to the charms and persuasiveness of a supposedly trustworthy godmother, but who turned out to be a selfish, PR-seeking businesswoman.

Darn it, SHE IS THE GODMOTHER OF THIS 18-YEAR-OLD! She literally used Charice for her own future financial gain! She literally threw her to the wolves!

I ask you to be more understanding of Charice. Imagine the scenario I just painted to you. It's probably how things happened. If at all, the blame lies not in Charice, but in the selfish doctor who may have persuaded her that "thermage" and botox injections are good for her and that she''ll be just fine...

I didn't blame Charice entirely, if you read my comments. I just asked that she not start conforming to Hollywood standards. This story comes out just after Hugh Hefner says that fake boobs are here to stay.

And Charice is 18, legally an adult. So you can't throw the godmother under the bus....Charice had to sign all those papers.
