"Samantha Harding, of the CPRE, called for some innovative measures like paying people to bring back empty bottles and cans and providing more bins."

Hmmmmmm.

Is this what passes for "innovative measures" nowadays? bottle deposits like we have had for 40 years in CA and "providing more bins?" No wonder the planet is melting.

The phenom of chewing gum on the sidewalks is really apparent in England. I asked my girlfriend (a Bristol citizen) what all those dots were....she replied gum.

I don't know if it still applies, but during "the troubles" a few years back they removed all the trash receptacles (were perfect for holding things that go bang) and I don't know if they ever replaced them what with all the terror stuff today.

Have you been here? two million pieces of litter out of a nation of 60 million people is really no big deal (the picture above is rather strange, it looks like the aftermath of a street party, hardly a normal street scene)
