George Clooney Emmy

LOS ANGELES — George Clooney will be recognized for his humanitarian efforts at the Emmy Awards.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will present the 49-year-old actor with its Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the ceremony next month.

Clooney is being honored for the "Hope for Haiti" TV special, which is nominated for an Emmy award, and his efforts to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina and raise awareness about genocide in Darfur.

John Shaffner, chairman and chief executive of the TV academy, said Clooney was "an obvious choice" for the award because he used the power of television to move people to act.

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award was established in 2002. Clooney is the fourth recipient of the honor and will receive the award at the Emmy ceremony on Aug. 29.

Let's face it the on the scale of becoming a working actor in America or being hit by lightening ....
You are more likely too be hit by lightening.
We should applaud both Mr Penn and Mr Clooney through their fame, or notoriety depending on your view.
I happen to like both actors and while I have deep respect for Mr Penn, we all know that he is a very controversial figure inside the conservative halls of Hollywood. Mr Penn does not kiss A**.
Therefore, to recognize Mr Clooney (less contoversial), on the EMMY carpet is to recognize someone who has galvanized many people to give help and support too victims of war and natural disasters, All this while Mr Penn gives himself to help the people of Haiti which of course is much harder than merely writing a cheque or having a charity benefit.. when all you have to do is call a few well known friends and hope they show up.

Is that true or did you hear it on Fox News?

Clooney is getting the humanitarian award for a tv special??? So, the fact that Sean Penn has been on the ground in Haiti for MONTHS, running a relief tent and traveled to New Orleans to assist there after hurricane Katrina? Does that count for NOTHING compared to Clooney's tv special?

Clooney has nothing on Penn. If it were up to me Mr. Penn, you would most certainly get the recognition you deserve for your humanitarian efforts.

Cute and clever... great combo.

Congrats GC but the award should have gone to Sean Penn IMO.

Congrats to Mr. Clooney. His humanitarian efforts has allowed me to forgive him for that Batman & Robin movie. LOL! Hopefully the show will remind everyone not to forget about a tragedy when it is no longer the lead story on the news.

I like George, but for a special? Isn't Sean Penn LIVING there, for MONTHS, on COTS, to help rebuild?

I think the article said that the award was for the special AS WELL AS his work with Haiti, Hurricane Katrina and the situation in Darfur.

CONGRATS you Mr. Clooney!! :-)

It's an Emmy. George has done work on television, and I don't think Sean Penn has, but both have done amazing work. I do admire Sean for his tireless efforts. He is an amazing humanitarian.

On one hand he's a humanitarian and on the other he's the biggest *sshat on the planet. The two sides of Clooney.

Curious as to how he's an *sshat...

George is a great guy, but he's emotionally 12 years old, and this has always been the problem. I doubt he'll grow up anytime soon.

Emmy humanitarian award? Isn't that like Nobel awarding best actor in a mini-series?

Let the Clooney/celebrity activist bashing start now.

(Never mind that he actually is using his fame in a constructive manner.)
