CNN reports that the children living in Waveland, Miss., are once again enjoying their summer by the shore. Waveland was the hardest hit community by Hurricane Katrina and since then efforts to rebuild the town have been centered around the children.
In the days following the storm, some children remember finding their parents among the wreckage and community members are being especially mindful that children suffered just as much as the adults who care for them.
Today, some of the earliest recovery projects have been centered around the youth. They have built baseball fields and parks, a community center, a library, schools, and safe places for people to retreat to have.
In the wake of the rebuilding process the priority in Waveland has been to create a safe place that young people will want to live in.
